Good news for this boy! Happy's x-rays were clear, and he's eating home-cooked food regularly. He can stop the antibiotics when this course is done. We have to check his temperature every 2-3 days for a while to be sure no infection or pneumonia return. AHG is acute hemorrhagic gastritis and it may be called a couple of other things depending on the vet. It is life-threatening and very scary because it hits suddenly, often without reason. The pneumonia was caused by aspiration due to severe vomiting. If you have dogs, never wait and try home care for bloody diarrhea and vomiting. Get to a vet or ER. The blood thickens from the fluid loss risking damage to other organs too. We're very lucky this little cat wrangler is home and healing with the help of several great vets.

Like people, most animals do better at home, if someone can provide the care they need. Happy is feeling under the weather and recently, his health took a turn for the worse. He’ll have to go back for x-rays to be sure his pneumonia is under control, but it's a lot of late nights administering meds for this fellow.
Happy is being taken care of, though. We are lucky to have such a wonderful community that can help us take care of our cats and furry friends at Catnip Casa, including our vets and local ER facility. Thank you to everyone who helps support Happy through your donations and kind messages!

It's a rough week. Our little cat wrangler, Happy, needs lots of love and prayers. I've been in ER with him since about 7 pm last night. I'm still there and maybe all day or overnight again. It's one of those things that can hit quickly. I'm still here and will have to fill in details later.

Look closely. There is a dog crammed in there between the chair legs and Earl. We had a few minutes of rain and thunder. I grabbed the smallest dog bed I could find and put it between my chair and the wall, probably less than a foot of space. They piled in there and hunkered down. Both are terrified of thunder. I could barely get up for fear of running over paws or tails if the chair moved an inch.

Today, we share the sad news that Leo crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday evening. Of course, he was held and comforted in the arms of all of us who love him. We had to make some hard decisions rather quickly after we discovered on Thursday, during our monthly vet visit, that he had become diabetic on top of a recent thyroid diagnosis. The combination of two recent serious changes in his health led us to feel it was unfair to this big beautiful boy to try to gain time by subjecting him to the risks and discomfort of more testing and yet more medications and shots in his daily routine. He's had allergies and asthma for many years and also a heart arrhythmia, all required medication which he tolerated with no complaints. However, two more diagnoses weren't a battle we couldn't win. There was too much risk of hurting instead of helping, and we didn't want him to suffer. His body was clearly telling us it couldn't keep going much longer. Quality of life is key, and he was 17 years old--closer to 18. Peace, comfort, and gentle hands to help him on his way were the right choices for this boy. We know his kitty family and friends are waiting for him as he flies free. Thank you for your love and support for him and us during all the years of caring for our senior and special needs kitties.

Earl is not happy with us or the vet. He started sneezing, dripping, getting snotty, and not feeling well--just went through this with Sebastian and thought it was a new med at first. Probably not, but took him off of it to be safe since it's a known side effect. Upper respiratory infections are never fun with multiple cats. Kind of like when one kid gets the flu, and it runs through the entire family. Some get it, some don't, and some of ours are high-risk. Of course, Earl is also not easy to treat, but he is a very good boy. He let the vet examine him, clip his nails, and give him an antibiotic injection. Then, he glared at all of us to let us know he was not pleased! Fingers crossed, he feels better soon. Qudos to our vet too who has been spending time examining him every month to get him used to allowing more handling--just for situations like this. It's working!

Beautiful Bright Eyes. She is what we call scaral (scared and feral). She has a hearing impairment and a history of urinary tract issues. Bright Eyes lives in an indoor condo and has supervised freedom during the daytime. She eats and plays at night when no one is around, as this is when she feels the safest. Leo is our most senior fellow (his sister is Bright Eyes) as he approaches 18. He's slowing down, and his medications are increasing. Fortunately, his quality of life is still good. Leo loves to sleep on the office chair and on the sofa if someone is watching TV. He gets his favorite food all to himself, too. Still, this week he had to go on thyroid medication, and the vet warned us that with his heart condition, he may simply not wake up one day. So we'll enjoy every day and keep him comfortable and happy as long as possible.

Sebastian is starting to look better. He got sick suddenly, and we were very busy getting the vet here and taking care of him. He had no fever, but he just couldn't seem to move and had no interest in food! Sebastian? No food? Not good. On top of that, he couldn't quit sneezing, which was probably a reaction to another medication for his itching and hair loss. What a mess. Fortunately, he's improving quickly with a dose of antibiotics and taking him off the other medication asap.

Daisy still loves videos with birds and squirrels. It's great stimulation since she can't hear. It takes a lot of work to keep a deaf animal engaged and active. The white cord you see is a giant zip tie to make sure she doesn't pull the television over. She gets very aggressive chasing an interesting bird.
