I’ll be taking advantage of the holiday time to take the next week off from the rescue to try to recover from an awful cold!

I’ll still be making sure to get to applications. If anyone is needing anything otherwise, please email [email protected]!

We will also be accepting apps for Cedar bug (who for now is enjoying all the snugs with his foster mama) when we’re back in action too!

Hoping everyone has a happy New Year!

We need a Christmas miracle for Harley.

FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME NEEDED!

516 days. He’s more than doubled the record of longest dog in our care and officially has had the most amount of applications ghost him or decide they’re no longer interested. This will be his second Christmas and birthday (Jan 5th) with us.

All Harley wants is a forever family. He’s needing a new foster asap so his foster can have a little break!

His people are out there. I know they are, but we NEED them to see him! He needs the shares.

We need to make sure he goes to a home where he’ll succeed and not be at risk of ending up back in the same situation. We need someone who won’t give up on him no matter what.

No adoption fee.

Harley was found with his 4 siblings (3 of which we took in) at 8 weeks old, dumped in a bin behind a mall. Our local shelter had found Harley and his sister a home together. At 6 months old, both him and his sister were returned, as the two had developed allergies. Due to there being no space, before we knew it, Harley’s sister was euthanized. We knew we couldn’t let Harley have the same fate.

Harley’s a very sweet 23 month old Boxer mix. He’s a happy, goofy boy that enjoys life with his humans. He loves snuggling on the couch, but also adventuring outside (even tagging along rollerblading!). Wherever you are, he’s happy to be. He’s still young and does have a few things to work on. He can be reactive to new dogs/people but once he knows you, he’s all about the love. He just lacks some confidence in new situations and needs some guidance on how best to engage with the world. He’s been fostered with a trainer and all his quirks are very manageable with training follow through. He needs exercise but isn’t super active. Great in crate.

Good w/ balanced dogs that won’t increase his reactivity. Cats with proper intro. Kids he would love in a structured home!

He’ll likely have manageable allergies for life. We have his 5strands results. We’re trying a different food, still stuck on apoquel/Keto. We’ll do what we can to support his adopters with funds, allergy wise.

Mia and Pugsley would still love to find a home as a pair. I can’t count the amount of cute pictures Elaine has captured of these two together!

Obviously if they find the perfect separate homes, with other playful kitties, we won’t want to make them (Mia especially) have to wait even longer for their home. It would be a bit of Christmas miracle if we could find them one together though!

Mia had her babies last March and was a great mama. They all found amazing homes, but she’s still somehow waiting. Foster mom, Elaine, in that time, was also fostering other kitties, including Gertie and her crew. Mia always loved on the kittens (she’s a very sweet girl with other cats) but has never loved a kitten as much as her twin, Pugsley. Mama Morticia had no problem with Mia deciding to adopt her child. We’re not sure if it’s because he looks so much like her, or he loves that she lets him freely torment her, but these two decided they’d like to stick together. She didn’t even love her own babies this much!

Mia is still young enough that she puts up with his playful kitty behaviour. Pugsley being more social, can help Mia even more with her shyness when it comes to humans (although she’s made huge progress). They’re amazing little babies and will provide endless entertainment! I think it’s a match made in heaven and we would love if we could find an adopter able to give this shy girl and crazy kitten a home together, forever. Pugsley did recently have a virus that gave everyone a bit of a scare, but he’s back to his crazy kitten self!

If you think you’re able to make their Christmas wish come true, or you think you have room, and a young kitty friend or two, in your home for Mia or Pugsley, please fill out an adoption application on our website.

Please share so we can make it happen!

This is what it’s all about!

*UPDATE A COAT HAS BEEN DONATED! THANK YOU!

Thursday he was on the list to be euthanized, today he’s snuggled up in bed with his foster mama.

He’s getting all the spoils and he’s a very grateful boy to be out of the shelter environment. He’s shy. Guys right now are scary, but he’s already making lots of progress. Jordan has earned his trust and now she’s his favourite person. He settles well in his crate and is learning the new routine! So far he’s looking to be a pretty easy going guy when he’s comfortable. He’ll slowly be being introduced to the other animals in the home when the time is right. We will be learning more about him and making sure to get him neutered/fully vetted before he can head to a home. For now Jordan is taking it slow and focusing on forming a bond and letting him decompress!

Cedar is underweight and the shelter has been trying to get him to gain. We’re going to get him on some puppy kibble to help try to pack on some pounds! We were able to send over a bed for him through amazon, thanks to recent giftcards donated (thank you!), but he’s in need of a coat! We do have options on our Amazon wishlist, if someone may be able to purchase one for him, but if anyone has a new or gently used one that would fit a 45lb dog and could get it to Stoney creek, we could use it!

Food is also a big need for this guy.

Cedar’s Wishlist!
-Puppy kibble (preferably Acana since he’s eating that)
-Chews or toys

I know we’ve been asking for a lot lately and I promise we wouldn’t be asking if it’s not needed! I also wasn’t expecting a new Salty this soon (or one needing puppy food) and want to make sure his he can get any extra things donated for him in time for Christmas

We may not be able to save or help them all, but we can make sure the ones we can, get everything they deserve with your help!

I used to believe in karma, until I started an animal rescue.

10 dogs at our local shelter were marked to be euthanized earlier today, unless they had rescues to take them. They, along with some other Ontario shelters, are still being forced to euthanize on a regular basis. There isn’t enough space to put them all. People are giving up on their animals at a very depressing rate. So easily abandoning them like they’re nothing, with no consequences. (I’m not talking about people who surrender the right way for legitimate reasons.)

Luckily most of the dogs were able to find spots to go. Some didn’t make it. They get 1 dog out, only for 2-3 more to come in. These dogs don’t deserve to die.

The shelter is not to blame and is many times the last chance they have. They love and fight for these animals. We are all trying our best with the lack of resources and support available.

Until the blame goes where it’s deserved, this will continue to be the new normal. Until our government does something and laws change, lives will keep being lost. We need others to come together to advocate for these animals and spread awareness. We need more low cost care options, especially spaying/neutering. More restrictions/less people supporting backyard breeders/puppy millers, who continue to add to the crisis. We need education on proper animal care and more support for rescues/animal welfare orgs actually making a difference. More consequences for those neglecting, abusing and abandoning these animals. We need more willing to give the misfits a chance.

People can’t help if they don’t know there’s a problem. Nothing will change if we don’t make it.

Im still needing a break health wise, but how when good dogs are dying? I will always wish Salty could do more. For now, we were at least able to save Cedar. Jordan stepping up to foster him is the only way we could make it happen. She is a true lifesaver and we are so grateful for her! He’s just a baby and now has a bright future ahead of him.

How do you help?
Contact our local government to demand a change, spread awareness, share adoptable animal’s posts, foster, adopt, donate, volunteer.

We need you!

Our Salties have been busy writing their lists to Santa!

They’ve all made it onto the nice list, and we’re really hoping the big guy pulls through to help make their Christmas extra special. Especially for our Harley boy who is spending his second Christmas without a forever family (unless a miracle happens). He’ll also be turning two January 5th.

We have a ton of options for items on our Amazon wishlist and our Renspets registry. You also have the option to etransfer, and we can make sure the donation goes towards purchasing supplies to spoil them Christmas morning (include in the etransfer msg who you are hoping to Santa for).

Mia & Pugsley
-Toys
-Scratchy things

Pico
-Bullysticks, Kongs or yam chews
-a Snood or other winter wear
-Waterproof blankets because the couch is much more convenient than peeing outside in the cold right now🥲

Harley
-Benebones or other hard chews
-Chuck it balls
-indestructible toys

Future Salties (that may be coming sooner than planned because I’m weak)
-Prevail cleaner is very needed (Amazon)
-Unscented litter
-Dog kibble (preferably Acana, Orijen or Open Farm since we are already feeding that, but any higher quality will do)
-Giftcards to Amazon/Pet stores/BCR
-Adopters or foster to adopt homes

Harley is eating Big Country Raw (Pure salmon and pure turkey), so if there’s any way we can get some of that for him, or donations/giftcards for there towards it, that would be very helpful! We just spent another $500 on food and meds for the sweet boy and will be paying our current $948.71 vet bill Monday.

If you’re unable to donate towards their wishlists, what they want most is a forever home. I can’t express how much that is needed. A quick share of their posts can help make that happen!

The hardest part of bringing an animal into your life is losing them. It’s been 1 year since my D***y passed. They say it gets easier but I’m not sure it does. D***y was with me for 18 years. There for me when many humans weren’t. My reason to keep going. She was the best cat ever and what made me fall in love with them so much. Thanks to her, so many Salty kitties lives have changed for the better. Lionel and Haze have done the best job trying to heal my heart but it’s just not the same as your soul baby. I promise to keep trying to help all the kitties out there in her memory.

Give your animals all the love. They are never with us long enough😭

Mama Morticia is off to her forever home!

Morticia was brought to Hamilton Animal Services as a pregnant stray. She birthed and raised her babes for their first 4 weeks there. Luckily Elaine is an angel and offered to foster the little family. Morticia now gets to live the life every cat deserves, instead of having to worry about birthing and raising kittens all the time.

We appreciate her adopters so much for giving her a chance at the best life. There are so many more just like her waiting for people to give them that chance!

As always the biggest thank you to Elaine and family for helping get this mama to forever.

The biggest thank you to those who were able to participate in Giving Tuesday!

Just over $1100 was raised for the day. We also had a few wishlist items sent and a donation called into our vet. We had some extra shares and other kind gestures that mean more than people realize. We are so grateful!

Having your support is the only way we can continue to help animals like Ophelia (now Jinx). After being born and spending her first 4 weeks at our local shelter, she’s now happy and spoiled in her forever home!

She found the best family and they already love her so much.

Foster mom Elaine did the best job caring for this little one until she was ready, as she always does!

THANK YOU for helping change these lives for the better. *Brother Pugsley is still waiting for his forever!

We’re at $475 donated for the day! If we can double that to make sure we have enough to cover the cost of our current animals care, and help out with Snoopy’s upcoming neuter, it would be such a huge help! Thank you❤️

It’s Giving Tuesday!❤️

Giving Tuesday is the day of the year for others to give back in whatever way they can. $5, or even a quick share, is all it takes to participate in what this time of year should be all about, giving!

So far we’ve been able to give 356 animals the chance at a new life. The continued support from others is the only way we can keep that number rising!

Although we are taking an intake break, the need for funds never ends when we still have animals in our care. Supplies and vetting still continue to cost us more than we have coming in. Please know that no donation or effort of support is too small and we appreciate anything anyone is able to do.

As an unfunded, volunteer run rescue, every donation or ounce of support means the more animals we can help, more lives we can save, and more ways we can make Salty better. However, we know all too well that it’s not easy for everyone to donate right now.

If you’re unable to donate, the biggest thing we need are adopters! Harley, Pico, Mia and/or Pugsley (pictured) are waiting for their perfect forever homes! A like or share of our available animal’s posts can help more than you realize.

If you choose Salty to give back to this year, it will not go unnoticed. If not Salty, please think of giving back in some other way. So many lives can be changed for the better with one simple gesture.

Who We Are

We at Salty Animal Rescue are here for one reason, to help advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. We are the founders, Karly and Katelyn Saltarski. As sister’s we have shared a passion for animals since before we could talk. From day one we have submerged our lives with animals, especially the ones in need. We have always dreamed of one day being able to help those animals and now our dream has become a reality! We cannot wait to finally have the opportunity to give these animals a chance at the life we know they deserve.

We cannot explain how much being able to start this journey means to us, and we are excited to get the chance to share it with you. Having the companionship with an animal is one of life’s greatest gifts and we hope you have the chance to experience that with Salty Animal Rescue. We are a registered non for profit rescue meaning we are not government funded. Our rescue depends solely on fundraising events, donations, and adoptions fees. This allows us to pay for our operating costs, vet care for all animals and supplies. It also allows us to hold spay and neuter clinics for strays and those who cannot afford to pay for certain animal care, throughout Canada. It is extremely important to us to make sure each animal is placed in the best home for them. To us rescuing isn’t just taking an animal out of a bad situation, but making sure they will never have to be in that situation again. That is why we will be working closely with our foster families to ensure we receive the most knowledge of our animals. This will guarantee we place them in homes we know they will be in “furever”. We are 100% volunteer based, with committed volunteers who selflessly help Salty Animal Rescue with our mission. Our volunteers help us by opening up their loving homes to animals as fosters, donating their time to help with fundraising, helping with adoption/foster applications and so much more. We owe a lot to our volunteers as we wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them.
