We had yet another one of our own dogs require emergency surgery this weekend. This makes 3 out of 4 dogs of mine. 🥴
My perfect pup, Kingston, woke up yesterday morning vomiting, not eating, painful, and super lethargic.
An X-ray showed a wad of stuff in his stomach. I tried to make him vomit to get it all out and it wouldn’t come up. Not even a little bit.
So we went in to get it. 😢 I can promise you I’ll never judge you if your dog eats something it shouldn’t.

A chance to cut is a chance to cure!
But not all patients are good candidates for surgery.
This sweet little dog named Missy came to me, not feeling very well. She was really tired and wasn’t eating very well. She was anemic with a hematocrit of 22%, and an amylase that was through the roof.
An ultrasound showed two large splint masses, and multiple masses throughout her liver.
We discussed the pros and cons of surgery. We discussed hospice care. We discussed the need for a blood transfusion. We discussed survival time.
I was hesitant to go forward with surgery. Ultimately, I told the owners I would go on any journey they wished to go on, and I would support whatever decision they made.
Her surgery was last week, and when I rechecked her today, she was almost back to normal. She feels much better, has much more energy, and is eating better again.
Her hematocrit had improved to 35% and her amylase is back to normal!
At this point, her liver values are unchanged, and her liver appears to be functioning normally. We know we have only bought her a little bit of time, but the time she has left will be great!

“Pay your staff well!”
I spent a few days at a conference in Denver speaking about my journey through being an associate, becoming a partner, and helping to build a new hospital from the ground up.
I had so much to offer on topics related to construction and building, but I took the opportunity to advocate for support staff!

October 1st means that suicide awareness month is over, but I’m here to continue the conversation.
One in 6 veterinarians have contemplated suicide, veterinarians are 2.7 times more likely than the general public to die by suicide.
A lot of us are Type A. Perfectionists. People pleasers.
The veterinary industry is hard. From the debt load, unrealistic client expectations, staffing shortages (spanning from techs to docs), and trying to manage a work life balance. It is HARD.
Clients- Take time to appreciate your veterinarian. They are busting their rear to be there for you every moment they can.
Veterinarians- Take time for yourself. Take time to check in on colleagues. Some may need a friend more than you know.
Vet Nurses- Take your time off. Your vacation. Your lunch break. There will be days it’s unavoidable - so take your break when you can.
Veterinary Associations- Take time to educate the public & elevate our profession.
Not. One. More. Vet.

This little pup was sneezing blood for several days, and it was only getting worse.
Only one side of the nose was affected. The right side would bleed, but never the left side.
A nasal exam in an awake patient only gets you so far, so I recommended a sedated exam.
Success!!!
