Another enjoyable commission. The beautiful strands of hair was so much fun to do. I created the depth and highlights of the dog's coat with the use of a gum eraser and a kneaded eraser. Both are effective tools for graphite artists like myself.

I wanted to share my recent drawing of this gentleman, Harold Lundrigan. He was my wife's grandfather and he was always fascinating to listen to and to be in his company. Nice little fact about this man... Apparently, Harold's father William Lundrigan hired my grandfather Jim Seaward to work for him many years ago in Corner Brook, NL. Such a small world with wonderful connections.

I had to work from a lower resolution image of this gentleman. At first it did not work and I needed a few more shots of him in order to get his features right. In the end, after a couple corrections it worked out really well. I just like to put it out there that, for those who request a commission, please supply me with high resolution photos. Better the image, better the drawing!

I wanted to capture the innocence and happiness that these two kids show from their passion and love of hockey. I couldn't help but think of my own kids and all that us parents do to give them the best childhood possible.

I have been asked about my process during a portrait commission. So I have attached some recent images with captions explaining the artistic stages. My clients live with their pets every day, see them in person and know better than I how their companions should look. With each stage I will consult with my client, sending them an image of my latest progress and making sure it is to their satisfaction. Questions are asked from both sides. They must have opportunity to tell me exactly what they want drawn. Sometimes there are changes or things to be added or subtracted. I often require numerous shots to get a better idea of their pet's features. In the end, when I sign my name to seal the deal, I know for sure that my client is completely satisfied.

I was commissioned to do the late rap artist Mac Miller and was asked to incorporate specific song lyrics into the background. I decided to use Canson black paper to full effect. What a blast I had doing this one!

I managed to pull it off... That tiny beautiful shine on the side of this dog's eye. These little unplanned and natural occurrences in a single capture are the greatest enjoyment for me and my pencil.

I swear that the smaller these dogs are the more feistier they look, lol! The beauty of these animals is that they are each an important individual and great companion.

This recent piece showcased some unique lighting and interesting shades and shadows. I love these kinds of shades because it gives such volume and depth. I also wanted to make sure I reflected the love and happiness that was captured between these two souls.

With this piece, this was the very first time I ever seen a dog wearing a cute hair buckle. I cannot say it enough, I love working on the hair strands... such beautiful coats!

The order deadlines for Christmas portrait drawings have passed. I would like to thank those who have supported me and have kept me busy throughout, for I still have orders yet to complete. New requests will now be completed in the new year.

I cannot share my latest works as they are mostly Christmas gifts. However, this recent one I can share. I have been asked if I would make exceptions and draw people as well. Yes, of course I would! Though I favour and specialize in drawing pets, I have accepted requests to draw family members as well.

Recently, I was asked to do a piece of someone’s native ancestor. He was Ojibwe and from the Sault Ste Marie area in Ontario. The vintage photo was not the best and I had to do some research and fill in some gaps. It worked out well and the customers were extremely happy! 😁
