Evolution Dog Training A Modern Approach To Positive Behavior Solutions For Companion Canines And Their Families

🐾 Senior dog owners — we made it to Part Six (the final part).

🚩 Behavior Red Flags I Never Ignore in Older Dogs — When in Doubt, Talk to Your Vet

When is a dog considered a senior? It depends on size and breed — but honestly, the number matters less than the physical and mental changes.

Changes in sleep, appetite, mobility, mood, house training, social behavior — even vision and hearing changes — can all affect behavior.

Sometimes what looks like stubbornness, clinginess, confusion, potty accidents or new reactivity may be a dog processing the world differently.

🥺Dogs often compensate before we even realize something is wrong.

So don’t wait for obvious suffering.
Even subtle behavior changes are worth bringing up to your veterinarian. 🤍

New behavior deserves curiosity before correction.

💬 Senior dog owners — what has aging taught you about your dog?

📌 Save this series for future reference, and share it with someone who loves an old dog as much as you do. 🐾

Thank you for following along with this series — I hope it helped you look at aging dogs with even more curiosity and compassion.

🐕UNPOPULAR OPINION👉

Dogs should learn how to untangle themselves.

Not every little struggle needs an immediate rescue.

If your dog gets wrapped in the leash, stuck around a pole, or snagged on something, do they panic… or pause and figure it out?

Most dogs panic because we instantly rescue them.

But being tethered is unnatural, and dogs need opportunities to safely learn problem-solving skills.

In this clip, Willow got snagged on a pole as a puppy and immediately stressed out. Instead of rushing in, I stayed calm and guided her to backtrack and free herself.

Teaching dogs how to slow down and think through mild frustration and uncertainty can prevent dangerous panic, injury and traumatic memories later on.

So next time your dog gets lightly tangled (meaning everyone is safe), don’t always fix it immediately. Stay calm, guide them through it, and help them learn.

The hard truth 👉👉👉
They need CONFIDENCE- building opportunities, more than they need you to always save them.

Could your dog untangle themselves?

🚩 Behavior Red Flags I Never Ignore in Older Dogs — Pain Can Hide in Plain Sight

Did you know pain doesn’t always look like limping?

Sometimes it looks like hesitating on stairs… avoiding jumping into the car… slowing down on walks… licking at joints… or simply not wanting to do things your dog used to enjoy.

Even changes in the way a dog eats can sometimes point to discomfort, including dental pain.

What people call “just getting old” may sometimes be pain hiding in plain sight.

And when dogs feel different, behavior can change too. 🤍

💬 Have you noticed subtle mobility or comfort changes in your senior dog?

📌 Save this post and follow along — Part Six wraps up the series with what age is considered senior, what to watch for, and when to bring even small behavior changes up to your vet. 👀

☀️🐾 SUCH an amazing Doggy Paddle Water Play Day at Willow Beach today!

This class is about so much more than paddle boarding with dogs.

It’s about:
✔ confidence
✔ teamwork
✔ communication
✔ emotional regulation
✔ problem solving
✔ body awareness
✔ trust
✔ safety
✔ and helping dogs and humans learn new skills together in a supportive environment

Watching dogs AND owners gain confidence throughout class is honestly one of my favorite things.

Some dogs were completely brand new to paddle boarding today, and by the end of class they were successfully out on the water together. 🖤

The weather was beautiful, the dogs did amazing, and everyone was victorious!

Huge thank you to Darlene, my mom, and my daughter for helping everything run smoothly today. I truly appreciate you guys so much.

And if you missed this event… don’t worry 👀

🚩 Behavior Red Flags I Never Ignore in Older Dogs — Could It Be Cognitive Decline?

Changes like disorientation, altered sleep patterns, nighttime wandering, seeming confused, or forgetting familiar routines aren’t always something to brush off as “just old age.”

Sometimes these changes may be clues worth discussing with your veterinarian.

Aging itself isn’t a behavior diagnosis.

The sooner we pay attention, the more opportunities we may have to support comfort and quality of life. 🤍

New behavior deserves curiosity before correction.

💬 Have you noticed subtle changes in your senior dog’s routines or awareness as they’ve aged?

📌 Save this post and follow along — Part Five covers how pain can hide in plain sight, and the signs many people overlook. 👀

🐾💪 Today Willow had her consultation at Rehab 4 Paws!

One of the things I care deeply about as a trainer is helping people understand that enrichment, sports, hiking, parkour, fitness work, and adventure with dogs should ALSO include conversations about:
✔ conditioning
✔ injury prevention
✔ mobility
✔ body awareness
✔ and long-term physical wellbeing

Because active dogs are athletes too.

And just because a dog is active doesn’t necessarily mean their body is properly conditioned for the things we ask them to do.

That’s why I’m really excited to collaborate with the team at Rehab 4 Paws in Henderson.

Today’s consultation was all about evaluating Willow as an individual:
• how she moves
• how she compensates
• muscle development
• flexibility and mobility
• posture and body awareness
• areas of weakness or imbalance
• injury prevention considerations
• and how to better support her long-term as an active dog

One of my favorite things about this process is that it reflects something I strongly believe in:

Good dog care should be proactive—not just reactive.

We shouldn’t wait until dogs are already injured or struggling physically before we start paying attention to their bodies.

As someone who personally does parkour, hiking, paddle boarding, and structured fitness activities with my own dog… this matters to me on a very personal level too.

I want to do right by the dogs I work with—including my own. 🖤

🤩Stay tuned for my next appointment where we will do some floor work and try the underwater treadmill!

🚗🐾 Road Trip Prep With Dogs

When I travel with my dogs, I try to focus on:
✔ the things they NEED
✔ the things that keep them comfortable
✔ and the things that help keep them SAFE

For this weekend trip, I packed things like:
• travel kennels
• harnesses, leashes, and long lines
• chew bones and puzzle toys
• beds and comfort items
• food and water supplies
• medications and potty pads for my senior dog
• dog booties for outdoor adventures
• a Furbo 360* mini camera to monitor them in the hotel room
• and of course… a canine first aid kit 🩹🐶

I think every dog owner traveling with their dog should carry some basic emergency supplies, including:

✔ Vet wrap
✔️ Rolled stretchy gauze
✔ Sterile Gauze squares
✔ Medical tape
✔ Benadryl (talk to your veterinarian about proper use/dosing)
✔ Chlorhexidine or iodine cleaning solution
✔ Slip lead
✔ Basket muzzle
✔ Warm/cold packs
✔ Extra bottle of water

A few other things I personally recommend:
• styptic (clotting) powder
• saline flush
• extra leash/collar
• emergency vet contact info
• copies/photos of vaccine records
• flashlight/headlamp
• tick remover
• towels/blankets

Hopefully you never need any of it…

But if something DOES happen on the road, being prepared can make a huge difference. 🖤

💬 What’s one thing you always pack for your dog on trips?

🚩 Behavior Red Flags I Never Ignore in Older Dogs — Pica, Odd Behaviors & New Reactivity

Did you know sudden new behaviors like pica, obsessive licking, unusual repetitive behaviors, or reactivity that seems to appear out of nowhere can sometimes have deeper causes worth exploring?

Not every behavior change is medical — but in an older dog, sudden change deserves curiosity.

Sometimes pain, discomfort, or other underlying issues can change how a dog responds to the world.

Punishment won’t fix discomfort.
Understanding the why comes first. 🤍

💬 Have you ever seen a new “quirky” behavior pop up in an aging dog?

📌 Save this post and follow along — Part Four covers signs of canine cognitive dysfunction, and it’s one many people miss. 👀

Doing more with your dog is amazing… but it comes with responsibility. 🐾

As a dog lover/outdoor enthusiast/vet nurse/behavior trainer, I love teaching activities like parkour, fitness work, hiking, paddle boarding, and other enriching outlets that help dogs thrive mentally and physically.

But the reality is… these activities are also more physically demanding than many people realize.

That’s why I take it seriously.

I feel a responsibility not only to teach the skills themselves, but to help owners better understand:
✔ what their dog’s body is experiencing
✔ how to help prepare and condition them safely
✔ what signs of discomfort or injury to look for
✔ how to support long-term health and mobility

Because prevention is always better than dealing with an injury later.

This matters to me personally too. I do these activities with my own dog, Willow, and I want to make sure I’m doing right by her just like I encourage my clients to do for their dogs.

That’s why I’m really excited to be collaborating with Rehab 4 Paws in Henderson on a series focused on preventive care, conditioning, and injury awareness for active dogs.

From puppies to canine athletes to senior dogs, their team brings an incredible amount of education and experience to the pets they care for every day.

Stay tuned to follow Willow’s preventive rehab consultation journey and learn more about how to help keep your dog healthy, strong, and doing what they love long-term. 🐶💪

🥹🥰Wagging While Working 🐾

This was condensed from a much longer training session, but one thing I loved seeing throughout was wagging tails, calm focus, and dogs actively participating. The ultimate payoff of positive training 🫶🏻

🐕These are high-drive rescue dogs, and part of our work has been channeling that energy into structured outlets that support arousal regulation, cooperation, confidence, and work ethic.

And watching dogs enjoy that process?

I love that.😍

(Yes — tail wagging can mean many things depending on context.)

But in moments like these, these are happy dogs enjoying learning and working with their people.

It never gets old.😭

To me, training can be more than compliance.

✅It can be play.
✅It can be teamwork.
✅It can be enrichment.
✅It can build skills and relationships at the same time.

Seeing dogs want to work — calmly, enthusiastically, and with their tails wagging — brings me a lot of joy.

This is why I do this.

And the card they gave me at the end of this session honestly got me. 🥹

Hearing they’re seeing amazing progress with these two dogs — a rescued-from-the-street bull terrier mother and daughter duo that started with fights and injuries and chaos, to improved manners and no more big scary fights — means SO MUCH.

Moments like that remind me why this work matters. Now, these dogs get to stay together, in their wonderful new home.👏👏👏

💬 Does your dog get a happy “working wag” during training?
