Daily reminder that Turtles are not “inside” their shells. They *are* their shells.
A tortoise/turtle shell contains nerves that connect to its central nervous system. So they can feel pain and pleasure when their shells are touched, stroked, knocked, dropped, or injured.
Contrary to what many people believe the shell is an inseparable part of their anatomy, forming part of its skeletal structure. The ribs and spine are fused inside the shell and contain nerves connected to the nervous system.
Take away - be gentle with your tortoise and give their shell a stroke, they will probably enjoy it 🐢

💥Stunning Lavender condas, possibly with Arctic?. All 66% het for Mercury (Axanthic). 3.1 hatched in our Mercury conda litter. We always produce these interesting reduced pattern lavenders.

Will be adding these to Morph Market shortly once they eat a couple more times. PM me if you have any questions.

PS. They are way better looking in reality. I just can never get a decent photo of Lavenders! 🤓

So found this probable ? chimera?? (two s***m - so two different sets of DNA in one egg) in a Conda Mercury litter. I'm editing my comments after talking to several biologist friends. The breeding was Anaconda het Mercury x d/het Mercury. The rest of the litter are mostly normal anacondas - Lavender, Axanthic and Mercury. His head is Anaconda and his body is purple line d/het like the mother. He doesn't have any kinks - he is crawling and hissing/ puffing out his neck in the photo. He literally looks like two snakes glued together. I'll grow him up and take better photos. He is posted for information purposes only, not to generate online arguments or cause offense.

My story

I kept my first reptiles as a teenager. This launched me on a path to becoming a fulltime professional herpetologist, working in venom labs in South Africa and Germany. Over the years I have kept and in many cases bred hundreds of different species of snakes and lizards including several of the first in the world. I wrote the Designer Morphs series of reptile morph books (best selling books on Hognose snakes, ball pythons and boa morphs worldwide). Plus also contributed to several additional herpetology books and numerous published articles and originated several new Boa constrictor and ball python blood lines and mutations/ morphs. . Currently keeping a small reptile collection. Interested in all things reptile, biology, wildlife, genetics related.
