Please support Betty and baby Kaleb. Mom and Baby have been facing on going displacement and ongoing medical needs being neglected. Kaleb is in the hospital now. Insurance company is not covering necessary procedures and the medicines to perform these procedures. Mom is comforting baby and doing everything to raise donations at the same time. Kaleb needs at least 2 more procedures and being discharged by Tuesday. Let's see this family get home and heal.

Saturday, Nov 4th from 11-5, join us for a celebration of the humble black walnut! This is our 2nd year harvesting from a tree on our land project, and we're super excited to continue our relationship with her. There will be a demonstration of how to get the hulls cleaned, and we'll discuss best practices for curing. The hulls will be used to create a big dye pot, so bring some clothes or fabrics (organic fibers work best) to dip!

Please bring a dish to share for the potluck as we wind down by the fire. DM for directions.

Hope to see you there! 💕

To our comunidad:

We have been forced to make the unfortunate decision to cancel the Dandelion Festival that was scheduled to take place on June 18th, 2023. We made this decision in order to address some intra-group conflict and harm that has made it impossible to continue organizing for some of our members. We believe that it’s important to normalize postponing events and organizing to address internal conflict harm and health. In community, especiall on the Left, addressing conflict and harm should be prioritized over continuing “business as usual” because that is how we keep our community strong and without community what are we doing this for?

We also want to take a moment to both thank and apologize to the many people who have already committed thought and labor into curating this space. Dandelion Festival began as both an offering to the community and a celebration of Mariposas Rebeldes. But It has been so successful because it hasn’t been just the Mariposas who’ve made it happen: it’s been the offerings and abundances of the wider community, coming together to create an intentional and decentralized space for worldbuilding. At this time, we do not have a rescheduled date, but will update collaborators and the wider-community if and when we decide on one.

En solidaridad,

MR

🗣️ We are finishing painting the Mariposas Rebeldes van tomorrow from 3 to 7 in Weelaunee People’s Park! All are welcome, come paint this car with us in the forest parking lot! Address is South River Trailhead, 3251 West Side Place. This overlaps with the weekly food distro at 5 and potluck at 6, so there will be free groceries and snacks galore.

Thank you so much for documenting our first event last week with these beautiful photos. Our hope with this project was to help community heal through art after a hell of a week in the forest, so the joy in these photos is deeply affirming. It can be hard for adults to access that precious creative state of just-making-art-without-judgement that comes so easily to kids. I know we’re doing something right when we can tap into that inner child energy and just have fun painting together. That’s the energy we’re bringing to Weelaunee tomorrow!

🗣 NEW LOCATION for Butterfly Art Day! In light of Sunday night's repression, we are moving the van painting event and the clothes mending hours to a new location. We are no longer holding this event in the forest. Please DM or .time.atl for the new address and we'll fill you in. Please circulate this update with your forest friends so people don't go to the wrong location!

We are devastated by the violent arrests of 35 people attending the music festival in the forest last night, 23 of whom are still in jail. This brings the count to 41 people arbitrarily charged with domestic terrorism, simply for being part of (or associated with) the movement to defend Weelaunee forest and stop Cop City. Police deployed tear gas and LRADs (which can cause permanent hearing loss) last night at a peaceful concert, in the presence of children. In video footage from last night, police can be heard shouting "you're gonna get shot" and seen tackling people at random. The fascism is no longer subtle. It is painfully clear that the state seeks to silence us by any means.

We demand justice for Tort and all people who have lost their lives to police terror. We stand with jailed protesters and demand their release and their charges droped. We stand strong to and . Be safe, be careful, and keep speaking out in solidarity!

Follow , , and .riot for updates on the situation here. Hope to see y'all soon! 🦋

Come hangout with Mariposas and friends during the week of action!

We’re bringing back the Cambalache tent for the 5th week of action. Bring things that are no longer serving you/you have an abundance of, take what you need, build relationships that will sustain you more than the State ever will! If you have a skill(share) offering, dm us, or just bring it to the Cambalache tent at Weelaunee People’s Park (3251 W. Side PL. 30316). So far, three people have offered to mend clothes at the tent—so bring your clothes that need fixin’!

On the 7th, we’ll be painting our new van in Weelaunee forest from 4-7pm! For people that don’t know: our collective’s truck was totaled in an accident while a community member was using it to move. We need a large car now more than ever since many of us are moving on to Bosque Itzpapalotl. Thanks to a white accomplice making a generous donation, we now have transportation again!!

Lastly, two of our Mariposas wrote about the concept of the “Sacred Web of Abundance,” and how it manifests in our community, such as during the Dandelion Festival! We’re forever grateful for the community making Dandy Fest a tradition & staple in the ATL DIY community. Article is published in ! Link in bio!

This Saturday!

We'll be starting the process of moving onto our land project and opening it up to short term stay for community members in need. We will be improving the accessibility of our driveway, felling trees, clearing brush, and setting up camping areas. As always, we'll be serving dinner for everyone at the end of the day. This is a great opportunity to see the land project and plug into what we're doing! Please RSVP using the link in our bio, it helps us know how many folks to expect.

If you have some flexibility in these upcoming months and want to help us build this space outside of the monthly workdays, shoot us a DM! This project can only happen with your ideas and input.

ALONG WITH OUR TUMBLR🔗Our next one is coming in hot 🔥🦋Excited to share with y’all our reflection of the past months, filled with equal parts grief, abundance, and growth.

In case you missed our last newsletter….
We closed out the summer months with an incredible work day and free workshop! For the first time on the Mariposas land, we have begun building out our infrastructure. We couldn't have done it without the help of Ami, an experienced off-grid carpenter working extensively within Atlanta mutual aid networks.

We were delighted to be working with an eager group of novice and experienced builders alike, Ami taught us how to use basic carpentry tools such as the circular saw, tape measure, and speed square. After the group got familiar with the tools, we laid out the foundation using a technique where batter boards were set up to hold a layout line. This helped us level and define the boundaries of our shed foundation. It was great learning from an expert who was able to help us lay the groundwork for our infrastructure!

It seems that we have the tools, the hearts, and the hands to turn this small forested plot of land in the middle of the city into a space where Queer/Trans Latine people and others can re-connect with the land and continue to re-imagine our relationships to it and to each other, remembering that pre-colonization our lands were not a resource, but our relative.

We can’t wait to build, harvest, process, and dance with y’all in October and beyond!

Although the weather is cooling down on this side of the hemisphere, we are coming in hot this month with a bunch of ways to plug into our “web of abundance” as our Mariposa Abundia () likes to say! Just this weekend we are having a couple events. So no excuses not to see you beautiful Mariposas!

Saturday, September 17th, 10-1am: Our monthly Work Day at our land project, Bosque Itzpapalotl (Bos-ke Eets-Pah-Pah-Lot-Tul) - a day trail building with mulch. Come build pathways on our land with us and let’s build relationships with each other as we imagine the possibilities for this land as a communal, collective space. We will feed you! Our work days happen the third Saturday of every month. Mark your calendars!

Sunday, September 18th, noon-1:30PM: If ya haven’t heard already, our world-famous plant walks are back, led by Lacey Jon, our favorite q***r Jewish ecologist and lover of all things beautiful that come from the Earth. Hit up the plant walk (and Lacey [] for all your native plant identification and local waterways knowledge) at Cascade Nature Preserve (2852 Cascade Rd) this Sunday. Link in bio to sign up. NOTAFLOF, but $10-$20 donation encouraged. Donations will go to . Bring your family!

Monday, September 19th, 5-7PM: Come hangout with Mariposas and Atplanta (.ga) who are joining forces to bring y’all some Muscadine history, harvestin’, and winin’! Can y’all say, “we love a skillshare!” yes, please books will be hosting and providing our native muscadines - which are growing abundantly at their lovely bookhouse! You are also welcome to go inside and read or buy books. This is a two part event. The first, on Monday, we will hang out, harvest grapes, and talk about how special our native Southern grapes are. On October 3rd we will make them into wine and continue reveling in the abundance!

We are so excited to share space and build with y’all in the coming weeks and months, as we move into a busy Fall season and process a summer full of transitions. We’ve done a lot and have a lot to do, and can’t do it without the help of our comunidad! See y’all this weekend and beyond!

Here's where you can find us this weekend and beyond!

Saturday from 9 AM-2 PM is our monthly workday, which is always heaps of fun and honestly the best way to get involved with us. This time, our friend Ami will be teaching basic carpentry skills and helping us get some infrastructure in place!

------------

If you were following us last year, you probably remember our botanical walk series led by local ecologist and dear collaborator Lacey Jon. Well, it's back! Join us this Sunday from 11 AM-12:30 PM as we explore Cascade Springs Nature Preserve and brush up on our plant ID skills.

There's a $10 suggested contribution which will support the Weelaunee QTBIPOC Travel Stipend. This fund was set up to help cover travel expenses for black and brown folks who want to come to Weelaunee and join the struggle on the ground against Cop City.

No RSVP required, but if you'd like to go ahead and make a donation, Venmo Chris-Wilson-335 or Cashapp $Chrislight6

If you came to the last Week of Action at Weelaunee People's Park, you might've seen our free store! Inspired by El Cambalache in San Cristobal de las Chiapas, Mexico, we encouraged everyone coming through to trade things and take what they needed. It was a joy to see people at the tent almost all week, trading or just hanging out. For some folks, it was their first time at Weelaunee, and they would approach us to ask for directions and leave with some clothes or seedlings or a book.

Even as the Week of Action came to a close, items kept finding their way over. We only ever intended to have the Cambalache Tent open for one day, but the community response made us want to keep it going as long as possible!

That's why we're super excited to announce that we'll be at Weelaunee / Intrenchment Creek Park every Wednesday at 6 pm supporting the new grocery distro and facilitating mutual exchanges. Won't you come and trade with us?

Didn’t get enough of Dandelion Fest? Neither did we! Which is why Mariposas Rebeldes will be hosting a lil Cambalache station at the opening BBQ for the Defend the Atlanta Forest Week of Action! (Scroll to the left for details!)

Come out, hangout with us, bring stuff to trade or gift, or don’t!

Everyday, capitalism alienates us from ourselves and from each other. Through Cambalache, we hope to build (and re-build) relationships with the comunidad based around a community of care, decolonizing our relationship to time, through reciprocity, and by removing money and transactions. We need each other more than we need money!

We also need the Weelaunee forest and for Cop City to never be built! The Intrenchment Creek Park, a public Dekalb County park, was illegally barricaded (since one barricade has been removed!) and closed by the police last week — in violation of court proceedings which dictate the land remain public property. Keep tabs on what’s going on and how you can help stop Cop City:

At the BBQ there will be food and face painting as well! Bring the familia! See you soon ❤️

Hi Mariposas! 🦋We wanted to make a few announcements, a few asks, and reflect about the abundance that we experienced with our larger community at Dandelion Fest. We also wanted to address an incident that occurred at the festival that we need help with. Please 🦋share 🦋slide two/three as we have an emergency fundraising request to fulfill the need that the incident created.

The festival was a beautiful force of so many different people coming together organically to offer what they had in abundance to give to others! We are so grateful for everyone’s offerings and contributions. These offerings included people lending us their expensive equipment to make the festival happen. One of these people was our comrade Chris of WRFG—shoutout to Chris for running Atlanta’s “rhythm and resistance” Station. Unfortunately, the speaker was stolen sometime at the end of the festival.. But Chris needs his speakers to run WRFG. Therefore, we must fundraise $700 to cover the cost to replace WRFG’s PA speaker. Solo el pueblo salva el pueblo, and we need y’alls help. Please follow the link our bio to donate or you can CashApp us at $MariposasRebeldes. Anything amount over will go towards our ongoing agro-forest project.

Secondly, we are trying to build on Dandelion Fest to establish a sustainable network of mutual aid, cambalache, and gift economies here in so-called Atlanta. We want YOU to be part of this effort and network! If you are interested, please first: join our ATL Cambalache Facebook group which we hope will serve as a virtual space to resist money through cambalache, gift economies, and sharing of resources. Secondly: please fill out a survey we created so we can get your thoughts on the festival and all the things! We greatly appreciate your time, so if you fill out the survey, we will put you in a raffle to WIN a Mariposas Rebeldes Tank!

We thank you, very sweetly, to all the Mariposas who came together to make this festival a success for a second year in a row. We truly believe that we have everything we need to be liberated—and it exists amongst each other, in our backyards, in our kitchens, and in the land. Let’s continue to create abundances!

19/06/2022

Still beaming from yesterday's workday! We planted pumpkins to take advantage of a recently-fallen mulberry tree opening up a patch of sunlight near the woods. Over time, their vines will climb up the tree and cover it in small hanging fruits. Excited to see how they do!

On a serious note, our funds have dried up. While relying on grants and donations has allowed us to get pretty far, we have to start thinking of fundraising strategies that are more sustainable. There's lots of recurring costs with this work and it'd be nice to know some of those costs will be taken care of every month.

So in that spirit, we're super excited to launch a brand new way to support us on an ongoing basis with Ko-Fi! We're offering a range of membership options with unique perks that will go a long way towards ensuring we can pay bills and other recurring costs. Even if you contribute just 1 dollar, you'll have our eternal gratitude. If you sign up for any membership option $20 and below, you'll be automatically added to a raffle where we pick one of our subscribers to receive a free garden consultation and workday from us! Of course, you're welcome to make one-time donations on the platform as well. Raffle winners will be announced in the Fall.

Make sure to share the 3rd slide widely and spread the word! Thanks for your support 🦋

The 2nd Annual Dandelion Festival 🦋

We had to get some rest after this weekend! We hope you enjoyed the evening as much as we did. This was absolutely a community effort, and nearly every single person who attended brought something with them. Whether it was clothes, seedlings, food, speech, song, or a helping hand, it all contributed to this magical atmosphere of care and reciprocity that radiated throughout the space.

Hope to see of y'all this Saturday at the monthly workday! It'll be a hot one, so we're gonna start early, around 9 am and wrap up early afternoon. Of course, lunch and refreshments will be provided. Sign up form linked in our bio.
