Yup, we're still cold over here!

Temperature is hopefully going to go above freezing today only to drop back down.With freezing rain in the forecast, we're in for more chaos on the roads!

As much as I love this wintery condition, with the wind chill it's dangerous to stay out long. We've been sticking to local parks for peace of mind. As much as I love to go hiking in the snowy mountains it's not worth the risks as I'd be alone.

For now we'll just make do with sunsets on our days off.

Winter is here!

We are experiencing an Artic Outflow with temperatures down to -16°C (3.2°F) and wind chills down to -23°C (-9.4°F)!

It's freezing is too short of a description! Thankfully we'll be bundled up inside with some healthy enrichment such as .petfood

You'll find me where the sunsets are.

This year I have actively tried to go watch the sunset when I am able to. Sometimes there are beautiful colours, other times it's a bit underwhelming but the fresh air and walk is always appreciated!

Are you ready for Christmas?

These last few weeks are a whirlwind! I have not had enough time nor feel the holiday spirits to put up our tree and lights.

The warm weather we have here is not making it feel very winter and cozy but thankfully the sunsets are still so breathtaking! I've tried to make it a commitment to see them whenever possible.

Another day another dollar!

It's crazy to think that we spend a third of our life at work. We trade our life for money that we can then use to support ourselves.

A third of our life working doesn't seem that unreasonable until you count in your commute, sleep, and life necessities. That leaves us less than a third of our lives to enjoy.

This doesn't seem like a lot of time to me. Perhaps one day Hiro will contribute but for now I'll just enjoy what time we have together.

I love and hate early sunsets.

Love:
- Earlier so once you get home it's not late
- Late hikes turn into sunset hikes

Hate:
- Seems quicker to me, less beautiful colours
- It's dark when I still consider it to be afternoon
- Temperature is noticeably colder once the sun is gone!

Maybe this is a sign to do sunrise hikes?

With the world always changing, it feels as if I've been left behind. The events of these past few weeks made me realize that I can't hold on to something that has been long gone. The amount of stress and effort I put in doesn't bring it back.

I got a big wake up call,
And with it I finally made the difficult decision.

It's been extremely bitter sweet but as more time goes on, I know it's the right decision for me. With too many tears shed, and a shaky resolve, I have decided to leave the current department at work.

This may be nothing to some people but for me it's monumental. I was there for over five years. I've been a registered vet tech for over 10 years! The typical burn out being five years for vet techs, I'm still beating the statistics! I take a lot of pride in my job. I always put my patients first, but this time I'm putting myself first.

I am scared of the future, I am nervous about how this will fall but it'll be okay. One breath at a time.

Always ready for a nap!

Yesterday I had to stay overtime due to short staffing and emergencies. This means my usual 10.5 hour shift was 13 hours!

Thankfully the boss man allowed me to come in later today which means I got to sleep in.

But that doesn't mean I wouldn't say no to a nap!

The leaves are done changing colour. The trees are bare, and the temperature is getting cooler. These days it feels more like winter than fall.

We have about nine hours of sunlight these days which is shorter than one of my work days! This has made both Hiro and I more reluctant to get out of bed in the morning.

Hiking is food for our soul. .petfood is food for the body!

Hiro continues to love his food. I've been able to go back to using his food as treats which is really nice when I calculate out his treat from his Basal Energy Requirement (BER).

Keeping a lean body weight is vital for in preventing osteoarthritis. Lean dogs also showed delayed onset of other chronic and age-related diseases.

There are several body condition score systems but the criteria for a lean body weight is the same.

✅ If you run your hands over the dogs chest you should be able to feel the ribs with a gentle push.

✅ There should be a noticeable taper from your dogs ribs to their abdomen.

✅ If you look at your dog from above there should be a noticeable waistline.

Just like humans there are a lot of various body structures, so not all points will fit. It is important to check in with your vet annually to do a general assessment.

I'll always say yes to see sunsets 🌄

I have learned that Hiro is a bully and is dog selective. Being a typically anxious person this is always on my mind. I try very hard to not project that anxiety onto him but I know I am.

I've always kept an eye on him even when he's with his friends. When things get too heated, I step in to deescalate.

For this muzzle Monday I share with you this story.

Recently Hiro and his friend got into a fight over a stick. It was so quick and sudden that I couldn't tell who started it. Regardless, I know even if it wasn't Hiro he'd be the one to continue the fight and not back down. Luckily it was just a very heated argument and we humans were close enough to intervene quickly.

Besides my ego, no one was hurt. After everyone was still friends.

This was a very good reminder to me that dogs will be dogs. As much as I trust my patients and Hiro, a part of them will always act on instinct. We all snap at times, and so do our dogs. I don't fault them for it.

This picture is taken at an off leash dog park with tons of dogs running around playing. Hiro did great with his muzzle on! He didn't try to pick fights, nor did he get upset wearing it. All that training paid off. I felt so proud and happy then to see him enjoy just watching others. Muzzled dogs can experience just as much life as others!

Sometimes I just can't believe the things I have accomplished.

Imposter syndrome is something that always looms over my head. This pertains to all aspects of my life such as work, hobbies, and creations. I don't believe in my knowledge and skills as a vet tech. I don't believe I am that person standing on the summit. I don't believe the name attached to that poem is mine.

It's hard seeing my accomplishments in moments I struggle with myself.

As much as I don't believe in myself, I want to summit another mountain, as much as I want to write. These desires are what I hold on to while giving myself time. I don't need to live life to the fullest. I need to live my life the way I can.

Monday comes just too soon!

This past weekend was supposed to be a wet weekend but it was actually warm and mostly dry! The leaves are starting to fall while some leaves are still changing colour. We are just as confused on what to wear as it warms up quite significantly! Regardless my hoodies are always close by!

Happy Thanksgiving to all our Canadian friends! I hope you all are able to enjoy some delicious food and spend time with loved ones!

We are thankful for so many things this year. It's hard for me to think positively as I'm more of a realist and have a hard time seeing the good.

🍂 I am thankful for my friends and family who stuck by me in my difficult times. I am not an easy person to get along with especially when I'm in a negative mood and they are constant. Thank you for seeing me at my worst and still supporting me.

🍂 I am thankful for our health. Even though I have multiple health problems throughout this year, I am still healthy enough to do what I want to do such as tackling this difficult hike again.

🍂 I am thankful for my work family. We're a mess of a team but we somehow get through each day and have supported each other through all the changes we had recently. It's been very traumatic but we still give it our all to each of our patients.

🍂 I am thankful for Hiro, who tolerates my long work hours, and doesn't complain. I'm so grateful to have a dog who is OK with sleeping in a kennel all day to hiking in the mountains!

Hiro was noticeably tired once we summited. But I know he couldn't have done it without the nutritious .petfood Thanks for giving Hiro the energy to enjoy these beautiful views!

Can we talk about sunsets?

I absolutely LOVE sunsets. The colours are stunning. I can sit and watch the sun go down every day! Sadly I am going to miss most sunsets as it'll be dark when I get out of work.

Now sunrises! That's something I'll hopefully learn to love as well! I'm not ready to wake up before the sun and hike in the dark to see it. I rise with the sun, not before it.

This past camping trip was so memorable for so many reasons. It was well rejoiced being able to relax for several days just enjoying the beautiful weather we lucked out on.

There were unfortunately no camp fires due to our dry drought conditions, but that didn't put as much of a dent into the trip as I thought it would.

We had lots of laughter, delicious food, and sadly shed many tears.

A stranger decided to target my beautiful sidekick Kino, my car. They keyed him at a trailhead while we were enjoying a picturesque waterfall. This wasn't in the city, this was out on a trailhead after driving a bit off a forest service road.

The anger, the disbelief, the anguish I felt tainted this trip. I just couldn't hold myself together to do all our other plans.

It's been a few days since the trip and I'm slowly healing. I gave up my original man hunt, I cried all the tears I had, I swore and screamed out all my anger, and I accepted that this happened.

Like bad weather, this too shall pass. I'm not going to let the rest of this trip's memories be painted over by this incident.

We are going camping one last time before it is officially autumn!

Hiro has enjoyed several camping trips in the past couple of years. We've upgraded from a simple Coleman tent to a special tent that has a section just for him! (Secretly he still sleeps with me when we are solo camping!)

We had made sure prior to any camping trips to start off on the right.

Here are our tips:

✨ Spend a night in your tent at home
This allowed Hiro to explore the tent in the comfort of his own home. He was able to sniff out all the new scents, and go in and out of it

✨ Kennel training
Kennel training is a must for me. It teaches your dog to be comfortable and calm in a small closed environment. For Hiro this means being comfortable in the car and in the tent.

✨The art of doing nothing
This is helpful in new environments as it teaches your dog it's OK to just settle and watch the world. This is great for when you want to just relax

✨Place command
This ties into the art of doing nothing but sometimes it's easier to have a designated place for your dog to occupy. This prevents your dog from tripping over your feet when you are setting up camp!

✨ Enrichment the mind and body
I always try to tire him out physically and mentally to help decrease pent up energy. This could be in the form of long walks, hikes, decompression walks, puzzle treats, and chews.

✨Keep to a routine
Even though you are out on an adventure, the sense of structure is extremely helpful. I try to get up and do the ecact same steps as if we are home.

The trees are turning colours!

We went out yesterday for a hike in what seemed like forever. The weather was perfectly warm. It was so relaxing enjoying the riverside with no one around.

With the recent rain and up coming Labor Day I am reminded that this summer is coming to an end. Like every summer I felt as if I didn't do as much as I wanted. I dreamed big and planned so little. I let the world go by without actively pursuing it.

I can blame the weather, air conditions, and personal but it was me who ultimately made these decisions. I am disappointed in myself yet I am still proud of the growth I have done in these past few months.
