Socializing your dog is a very important step in the growing and training process!

1. New people
Let your dog approach at their own pace, if and when they want to.
Make sure puppies are safely, gently, and positively exposed to different people.

2. Other animals
Always check that the other animal is friendly and tolerant of other dogs before allowing your dog to approach.
Reward good behavior and redirect negative behavior.

3. New things and environments
Introduce young dogs to different types of surfaces (hard, soft, wet etc)
Take rides in cars, boats, elevators and other moving objects.
Help make visits to the vet and groomer a positive experience.

Kong toys are a favorite of ours as well as many others! Make sure when stuffing your Kong for your dog to keep safety in mind!

Kong’s have 2 holes in it for a reason. If your dog gets the toy stuck in its throat, they will still be able to breath as long as both holes are open.

We like to spread doggy peanut butter all around the inside and press dog food into the peanut butter. If you make them ahead of time stick them in the freezer to entertain your pup for hours!

The 12 Keys to successful training (part 4)

10. Catch your dog being good. When you see your dog doing something you like, reinforce the behavior with positive praise.
11. Tell your dog how you want them to behave. You can tell your dog 10 things not to do, or save the time and teach them the 1 thing you want them to do instead.
12. Keep training session short and sweet. If your dog looses focus or you lose patience, hit the pause button, and come back to it later.

The 12 keys to successful training (part 3)

7. Every time your dog comes when called, give them praise!
8. Figure out what your dog finds valuable (treats, petting, toys etc). This is different for every dog but once you find it, use that to your advantage.
9. Your dog is the one that determines what is valuable. (See tip 8) you can’t choose what they find valuable, only they can decide that.

Dogs are natural scavengers and with their keen sense of smell they can be great at finding hidden objects.

One way to introduce your dog to scent training and challenge them mentally to put that good nose to work is the game find it.

Grab some tasty treats, the smellier the better, and show them to your dog. Have them sit and stay, or have someone hang on to them, while you hide the treat somewhere they would be able to get to.

Give the “find it” or whichever command you choose to use (just make sure it’s the same each time!) ans allow them to sniff around and find the treat.

Dogs need mental stimulation just like us! A dog who is bored may become attention seeking which may lead to destructive behaviors.

Training is a great mental workout for your dog but there are also fun activities and games you can play with them as well!

One game is find the treat.
Grab a muffin tin and some tennis balls and place a treat in one hole and tennis balls in all the holes. Help your dog to understand that they are to pick up the tennis balls until they find the treat!
Once they have the concept down they will love to play with you!

As we all know dogs are descended from wolves and continue to be pack animals. This fact makes it crucial for you to become the pack leader of your dog or dogs.

How can you become the alpha?
Training is key! But here are some helpful tips to help you become your pack leader.

• set boundaries and stick to them
The choice is up to you but if you decide no dogs in the bed, stick to it. Don’t want your dog in your lap? Correct every time they do. Consistency is key.

• the alpha always comes first
Each time your dog goes through a door make sure you are leading and they follow behind you

• lead your dog
Especially on walks, remember, you are walking your dog. They aren’t walking you.
