As the current events of Hurricane Ian have shown, Florida has too few buildings in which to house horses and other livestock during these devastating events, and no building close to SW coast (Sarasota County). Fox Lea Farm is not near the flooding conditions the rivers can cause. Our local roads and Fox Lea were dry within hours of the storm.

Our area of Florida desperately needs a hurricane shelter for our equine community. Fox Lea Farm envisions many different entities coming together to achieve this. The community in general, the County, and the State. It would have been much better for the horses rescued after the storm to have been tucked safely in a hurricane shelter instead. This is the starting point. This will not happen overnight, but the goal is to have a place of safety before the next storm hits our coast.

The building and stalls for a 96-stall hurricane structure are $950K without adding water and electricity. We have started these conversations at the government level. Our goal is to build a few of these. Our area needs this safety option for the local equine and livestock.
