Why is fiber such an important part of your dog’s diet? 🤔🐕 Fiber is found in fruits and vegetables. It is the indigestible part of the plant. There are two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber acts as a prebiotic, meaning that it feeds the good bacteria in the gut. Insoluble fiber helps to bulk up stool, which is why it helps dogs with diarrhea. Firmer stools will also help express your dogs anal glands so they don’t get backed up! Finally, fiber helps your pet feel full as well as prevents spikes in blood sugar, keeping them metabolically healthy. Some dogs may have different fiber requirements than others. Just like us, she’s passionate about helping dogs live their healthiest, happiest lives and loves educating pet parents 🐶🧡 We’ve teamed up to bring you the best tips and advice in our new recurring series✨ Ready to hear from Dr. Kerri on a timely topic? Let’s talk dog allergies!👇 “Did you know that 90% of allergies in dogs are environmental? Allergies tend to flare up in the warmer months, especially when there is more moisture in the air. If your dog is constantly itching and scratching, especially if their skin or ears are very red and irritated, they could have allergies. Some allergies respond very well to simple changes such as a new diet or allergy supplements. However, allergies vary in severity, and some dogs will require oral medications or monthly injections to control their symptoms. So what should you do? I always recommend making an appointment with your primary care veterinarian, as some allergies may have an underlying cause (such as fleas), and all allergies will need long term follow up. If you have to wait a few days to see your vet, I recommend putting a cone on your dog to prevent them from self-harm. The more they itch, the worse the inflammation - it is a vicious cycle! You can also try Benadryl (diphenhydramine) as this is a safe medication with a wide margin of safety. The dose is 1mg per pound of body weight (so a 25 pound dog would get 25 mg) given every 8-12 hours. If you give liquid Benadryl, make sure there is no xylitol in it! Does your dog have allergies?
