Did you know......THE VERY FIRST ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES WERE MADE OF STONE?
Bian Shi (stone needle) was a sharpened, polished stone used to treat illness during the New Stone Age in China. Much later, needles were made of silver and gold. Most practitioners use stainless steel these days. However, small gold implants can be inserted at certain acupuncture points to give longer lasting stimulation.

Did you know acupuncture may be used to treat a wide variety of disease, not just used for pain management. Here is an abbreviated abstract below describing acupuncture treatment for laryngeal paralysis. Laryngeal paralysis is a degenerative disease that affects the opening and closing of the larynx. This opening is important as dogs pant to release heat and if they cannot open their larynx to do that they can easily over heat and have difficulty breathing.

Abstract : An approximately 18 month old, 31 kg, neutered Fire Constitution male Rottweiler was presented for bilateral laryngeal paralysis, vomiting/regurgitation 2-3 times daily and malnutrition of unknown duration. Two acupuncture treatments four weeks apart were performed with marked improvement of clinical signs over a 6 week period. The patient continues to do well 16 months after the last treatment. Acupuncture may provide a safe treatment option for laryngeal paralysis in the dog compared to surgical procedures that can be complicated by aspiration pneumonia and death.
