Fireworks have started, so how can you help now if your dog is scared?
Always give comfort to a dog that seeks it, you can not reinforce fear. When you are scared or worried you want to be comforted and dogs are the same. Equally if they want to be left alone then leave them alone.

Build them a den, this should be a nice quiet place filled with familiar smelling blankets, toys and treats and be accessible at all times, if using a crate don't shut the door, they should be free to come and go from the den as they feel confident.
You're dog may have found their safe place already, don't deny access to this place, enhance it using the den building ideas.

Close the curtains and put gentle music or the TV on. This dampens the noise from outside but choose your indoor noise to be soothing rather than exciting with sudden noise.

Chewing helps calm dogs, if they will take food give them treats to chew on. Try pairing the treat with the bang of the firework, over time your dog will associate the bang with a treat and fireworks will seem less scary. Not all dogs will take food when worried, try starting with a chew treat before the fireworks start so your dogs anxiety doesn't get to the level that they can't take a treat anymore.

Training for firework fears is a long process and is an ongoing training programme. There are lots of things you can do and should start as early as possible in the year before the real busy firework season starts. Contact me to book a consultation for help now and a long term training plan.

The results offer a first-of-its-kind anatomical description of how dogs can literally “see” the world through their noses.

BREAKING NEWS
Veterinarians at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in the USA think they have worked out the reason why grapes are toxic to dogs.

After receiving reports of vomiting and kidney injury following exposure to cream of tartar, veterinarians put two and two together and worked out that tartaric acid and potassium bitartrate, compounds present in cream of tartar, are also present in grapes.

This may finally answer the long standing question as to why dogs develop kidney injury following ingestion of grapes. It also answers the question as to why some dogs are affected and others are not. This conundrum lies in the variability in tartaric acid concentration in grapes with concentrations changing based on grape type, locality and ripeness.

Whilst 20g of grapes per kg (approximately 5 grapes per kg) has been reported to cause kidney damage, there is a report of a dog eating 1/2 grape per kg developing kidney injury also. So the best advice out there is still to avoid feeding your dog grapes and sultanas!

With hot weather warnings being issued by the Met Office, it's important to remember the signs of heatstroke in dogs. Never risk walking your dog at peak times, keep them cool & safe. 🥵☀️

If you suspect your dog may be suffering from heatstroke, call your vet immediately to get a diagnosis and an appropriate plan of action. Whilst you are phoning your vet, move your dog to a cool area, offer water for them to drink, and pour tepid water over their body.

UPDATE: We recommend using tepid water (room temperature) whilst getting urgent veterinary advice. We believe every individual dog deserves the best possible care, which would require personalised veterinary guidance. We support the use of cold water once a vet has made a diagnosis of heat stroke.

Temperatures tomorrow are going to be even hotter than today, keep your pets cool. Early or late walks or no walks, try putting ice cubes in their water bowl or freezing their favourite treat for pet popsicle. If your dog is like mine and a sun worshiper then remember to limit the time they are in the heat, they soon overheat !

06/07/2022

With temperatures set to rise into the weekend and next week please remember to protect your dogs and not walk them in the heat.

Have you heard about the Cardalis App which is free of charge and can be downloaded from the App Store? It allows dog owners to easily assess and record Resting Respiratory Rate, which can help with both the early detection and monitoring of heart failure patients. It also provides a medication reminder service, helping to ensure compliance with long-term therapy.
