The bees picked up on the change in weather before our beekeeper Shaun even did. Clouds rolled in the wind picked up and the temperature dropped and foragers and scouts came running back to their hives. So many bees came back at once that the sound was deafening and the landing boards got crowded with bees trying to get back inside.
Every beekeeper approaches winter prep a little differently. Our winter weather in Wisconsin and across the Midwest can prove to be unpredictable at times. When it's hot outside bees will empty out of the hive to cool down. All those little bodies inside generate a lot of heat and it only gets hotter as outside temps increase. This is one way bees work to cool their hives down. Too much heat for bees is as dangerous as too little heat.
