Please be aware that there has now been a second confirmed case of rabies in our area. This latest case is in Valley Stream and very close by. Please be vigilant and keep away from wild and feral animals and make sure that your pets (this includes house cats) are up to date on their rabies vaccine!

Our hospital has been certified an official “Santa’s E.L.V.E.S.” (Emergency Landing and Veterinary Expert System) location.

So fear not - In the event that Santa’s reindeer team needs to make an unscheduled Christmas Eve stop for sled repairs, refueling, or veterinary care, staff WHAH will be available to provide needed assistance and ensure a safe and on-time delivery of Santa’s cargo!

Happy gotcha day to our patient Pistachio Rose! Pistachio came to us as a tiny 3 pound puppy that was at a rescue and was suffering from Parvo Virus along side a few of her littermates. There were times we were unsure of what her future would hold but she fought hard and was discharged from our hospital a little over 8 years ago at only 4 pounds. She shocked us all to grow into a hearty 73 pound dog who is much loved by Maggie May! We look forward to seeing her smiling face at every yearly visit! We love a happy ending!

I just found out that when we look at our handsome Gus and Roscoe, we are seeing ancient Egypt. Most of the world's house cats trace their lineage to felines domesticated by the Egyptians, who particularly liked, and bred, the orange-colored cats that gradually evolved from the wild tabby cat color. There are even mummified cats that clearly have orange fur! We always knew our boys were majestic. (Thanks to Nova on PBS for the info)

Look at pretty Penny's remarkable nose. Did you know that a dog's nose print is as unique as our fingerprint? No two alike! Amazingly, dogs can wiggle each nostril separately (we can't!), which helps to determine the direction of an odor. And about that - dogs' noses have almost 300 million more scent receptors in their nose than we do, and can detect scent up to 100,000 times better than we can! That's why they are so good at search and rescue and detecting illness in people. Way to go, Penny's nose!
