It's really easy when trying to help your horse build fitness or lose weight to think 100mph is the way to do it. So often, I talk to my clients about taking their horses for a walk rather than drilling them on the lunge and there's a few reasons for this.
1๏ธโฃ Very few people know how to lunge correctly and appropriately
2๏ธโฃ Many overweight horses are in no position to be doing circuits (heightened chance of injury)
3๏ธโฃ Walking with your horse gets you moving too which is far more fun!
I have had genuine weightloss results with horses who are only walked in hand. For those who have well behaved dogs and dog loving horses, you can do both at once and then it isn't so much of a time burden - ๐๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ถ๐ป! ๐ถ๐ด
You may have seen my earlier post about rider weight where I mentioned how I vary the work I do with my 12.2hh pony for a lot of reasons. We actually achieved some really good weightloss results just by having fun with our labrador friend, Molly, on foot.
Whilst riding is super fun, having a horse who is used to hacking in hand or in the long reins can be invaluable if you're ever met with a situation where you're unable to ride or your horse is unable to tolerate ridden work. Plus fitness is built by being consistent. By showing up and doing ๐ฎ๐ป๐ form of extra movement with your horse you are helping work towards your mutual goals.
Today I took my girls for a 30 minute long rein across the stubble fields and we had just as much fun as the day before when I was riding! ๐๐พ
Things needn't be fast, but with a few hills or some challenging terrain you can engage brain matter and muscles in an innovative kind of way! ๐ช
Here's a little clip from a couple of weeks ago of long term client, Sox, getting to grips with his ThinLine Global Grazing Muzzle - you can see he was quite an instant pro!
The Thinline Grazing muzzle is one of two muzzles I stock and fit. A fitting consultation takes up to 45 minutes and includes a guided grazing/ training session. Grazing muzzles, much like bridles, require a slow and considered introduction. More often than not, we need to train our horses how to eat with their muzzle - a thing often overlooked.
Muzzles give many horses the freedom to graze with their friends and can be a lifeline to many ponies.

Owning a horse who has had laminitis in the past can be an emotional rollercoaster. ๐ตโ๐ซ
.
We strive to give them the freedoms they once had within the almost invisible tolerances of their own metabolism. Grazing muzzles and strip grazing are some of the techniques which we can employ to help us on our journey to forage, friends and freedom.๐ฑ
.
Native ponies, particularly, harness energy in such a way that they make the most of every mouthful, sometimes more so than their sportier siblings.
.
When you've been on a journey with your horse, you're allowed to be emotional at something as simple as them eating grass!

Every so often, this day changes from the 21st of December to the 22nd for some cool reason to do with the tilt of ๐ and the position of the โ๏ธ. Did you know that?
.
This year, the solstice itself occurs at 3.27am GMT ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, and we get just under 8 hours of Friday festive sunlight. That's 8 hours and 49 minutes shorter than the longest day of the year ! ๐ฎ

Today (the 21st) is still commonly regarded as "the shortest day" but this year it isn't so. (I'm sorry, I'm a data analyst, I can't help but shoot out some stats ๐ซฃ๐ค) . The next time it falls on the 22nd is 2027. ๐

Some of us have had even more snow. I will be driving extremely carefully and ideally would like to be able to set the weighbridge up somewhere free from ice and snow. The weighbridge is very slip proof but I want to ensure the safety of all the horses as they walk on, so happy to set up in a stable or stable block.
I will message each lead booker as I'm on my way, times will obviously be subject to change due to conditions.
See you all soon! โ๏ธ

In nature, without the confinement of fencing, horses can travel up to ๐ฏ๐ฌ๐ธ๐บ (๐ญ๐ด.๐ฒ ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐) a day in search for food, shelter and safety.
.
One side of a square 3 acre field is about 0.3 of a mile, so your horse would need to walk the length of a 3 acre field ๐ฒ๐ฎ times to make the equivalent distance, every. single. day! ๐โ๏ธ
.
In fact a study by Eleanor Mackenzie from Hartpury found that domestic horses moved on average only 7.4km per day in their turnout fields. That's only ๐ฎ๐ฐ.๐ฒ% of their wild cousins!๐ฎ
.
To give more weight to this, it's the equivalent of us moving only 2,460 steps when our aim is 10,000 steps a day. I think I'd be bouncing off the walls๐ตโ๐ซ๐ฆ
.
I'm under no illusion that it's pretty difficult to ramp up movement in the field when you keep your horse at a livery yard or you have limited acreage. When winter strikes, horses inevitably begin to bicker or injure one another often as a result of boredom. There remains a desire to stable them for longer as a result, to keep them safe or because ๐๐๐๐๐'๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐
. ๐ฑ
.
I understand and completely sympathise with this conundrum, and that's why we must get ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ with our horse's movement.๐ช
.
It doesn't necessarily need to be ridden movement, I'm an advocate for any movement anywhere at any time. I'm a huge fan of taking my horses for walks in hand, or leading one from the other. It's a great way to get those steps up when I may not feel like riding or may not have the time to ride both horses. โฐ๏ธ

Well, it's not often you get a ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ข๐จ๐ง upon your scales! ๐ฎ๐คฉ
A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of meeting Yasmin Ingham Eventing and her wonderful string of horses. Alongside my good friends at Trickle Net , we watched in awe as Banzai Du Loir graced the scales looking ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐! ๐ฏ
Banzai and Yas had just landed a win at the SAP Cup at Aachen no less than two days prior to our visit, and it was clear why - they're clearly ๐ด๐ถ๐ค๐ฉ a connected team๐๐ฅ
The affectionately named Piglet (aka Rehy DJ) joined later for some weighing shenanigans whilst friends watched with interest (see the horses peeking at Banzai!๐).
Yasmin and her team incorporate Trickle Nets into their day to day management, clearly appreciative of how trickle feeding can benefit horses of all levels of athletic ability (not just your everyday greedy pony!). All of Yas' horses enjoy a varied, enriched life which includes plenty of turnout, rest and good old fashioned one on one time on the ground to complement their fitness regime. It was clear from the moment we arrived how much Yasmin cares for each of her horses and we had a giggle when she revealed that she keeps her stash of treats kept in a Percy Pig jar! ๐ท
It's apt that this video was shared just in time for the start of the ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐๐ง ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ๐ฌ in Normandy ๐ซ๐ท

The competition kicks off with the dressage tomorrow, all of which you can watch via ClipMyHorse.TV on a subscription basis (free trials are available!) ๐บ
I'm sure you'll join me in wishing Yas and Banzai the best of luck - I know you'll be brilliant! ๐๐ฌ๐ง

Did you know that the Laminitis app has had an update for android phones and now its far easier to search locations?? ๐ฑ๐
.
This app is used by many as an aid when caring for and managing a grass sensitive horse. The dial shifts from green to red depending on the perceived risk based on a number of variables. ๐ฆ
.
Whilst the app is not intended to be the only thing you base your day to day care on, it can be a nifty tool use to aid insight as you're getting to grips with managing your grass sensitive horse.๐
.
But how does the app work? โ๏ธโ๏ธ
.
Well, many of you know I am a data anaylst, so I've looked into the app myself with interest ๐ค
.
The app gathers weather data from hundreds of weather stations around the country and analyses historical weather data to produce a risk index. The weather conditions are used to predict the rise and fall of non-structural carbohydrates in the grass, which can contribute to the development of laminitis.๐ฌ๐ค
.
The initial development of the app used case study data of confirmed laminitis in order to supplement the weather data. The app utilises existing research and is based on a computer model which simulates conditions which cause grass to become stressed (and therefore post a higher grazing risk).๐ฉ
.
๐ฑThe research is on C3 Cool grasses which appear in a lot of UK pastures. They enjoy high moisture lower temperature climates and include ryegrasses.
.
๐ The app covers UK, Ireland, Netherlands, France, Belgium and New Zealand.
.
๐ฐThis app is not free but could be a worthy asset to your management toolbox.๐งฐ
.
๐ The app currently does not offer notifications and needs to be manually accessed day to day for the reading. It can easily become part of a daily routine but is not developed to be totally hands free.
.
๐DISCLAIMER: No app should replace Veterinary advice and correct animal husbandry. This app is simply a tool to help encourage daily observation of one of the laminitis risk factors

Like many horse owners, I struggle to relax in the first few days, wondering if my horses truly can survive without me (only to later find out they very much can ๐). Are you the same ?
.
My two horses have been left back in Newcastle at their wonderful livery yard which provides holiday services. I also have a brilliant friend who treats my horses like they're her own doing the majority of the care, and that combination really helps me relax.๐

To make things even easier for my brilliant horse nannies, I've been using the Yardd app to easily share feed details in an online format. Gone are the days where you need to scroll through Facebook messenger or texts to find which feeds your adopted horse needs!๐ .

I send each horse's feed regime straight to my friend and she is able to know exactly which feeds are needed by checking her email. Genuis ๐ก

T&E spent on Puppachinos!๐ถโ๏ธ
.
Over the weekend, a lot of my clients were introduced to my co-worker and best buddy, Molly. ๐
.
Molly is my 4 year old labrador who is often with me on my visits. She lies angelically on my passenger seat, so angelically so that many clients don't even know she's there! It's been exceptionally hot this weekend so I've been asking my regulars if they'd mind her coming out for a little breather and a hello, which she's very much enjoyed.
.
I try to incorporate a good walk in between visits when I have Molly with me, and today we visited Herrington Country Park and the brilliant @lovelilysunderland for the first time - it was a massive hit and the Puppachino went down a treat (in her delicate princess way) ๐
.
Thanks for another fabulous weekend everyone , Molly is very sleepy!

This is what a 60kg loss looks like on a 14.2hh welshie!
He started out as a rather chunky, fluffy 4 year old and matured into a dashing, slim 6 year old. Yes, young horses can lose weight and still grow!๐ฑ
.
I've been weighing @un.luckyace for almost two years now, and in that time we've watched him mature and fluctuate in weight as the summer came and went. Ace is a master at his seasonal gains and losses, shifting 44kg in winter 2021 and 47kg in winter 2022.๐
.
Ace's owner has a keen eye for detail and having regular photos and weighings has really kept her focused, informing some of her management decisions including paddocking, workload and feed. Over the two years, we've managed to prevent his weight returning to that of his summer 2021 weight (469kg) meaning that even in the peak of summer 2022 we had a lighter, healthier horse. Roll the clock forward to now and we've managed to shift a total of 63kg (9.9stone) in the comparison photo (June 2021 vs February 2023).
.
What makes this an even BIGGER success is Ace now has more forage and more feed than he ever has had before. As we look towards the summer we are in the enviable position of being able to offer him more turnout which is simply want for our horses โ๏ธ๐
.
Weighing growing horses is a favourite of mine, as many owners are often led into thinking that the more food we give them, the more growth we'll get. The fact is, you can only feed growth up to the genetic potential of the individual. In other words, our horses are pre-programmed with a height they can reach, and all we can do is support them in allowing them appropriate forage, freedom and friends. Horses do the majority of their growing before the age of 2 years, but any rapid growth caused by overfeeding has been linked to developmental orthopedic disease and unsoundness. When we are looking at backing our horses, we need to prioritise their current bone development alongside their body condition and curr
