Knox! This sweetheart of a Doberman came to us for a Board & Train program all the way from Elite European Canines in Kansas ❤️ Today was his Go-Home appointment where he met his new family and got to show them what he knows!

Knox worked a lot on being an independent pup and learning that the world can be a lot of fun if we're brave and see what's out there. Like many Dobies, he is a very Velcro pup who would be glued to his person 24/7. That makes it challenging for a dog who is going to have an Agility career! We worked lots of confidence building and exposing him to some of what's out there in the world!

Today we worked on obedience training, recall, shaping, clicker training, and helping his new family learn the foundations. They'll have all the support they need as this lovely young man matures.

The best time to add an additional dog to your household is when you don't remember the last time you had to correct the dog you already have.

A lot of people make the mistake of getting a second dog because their first one is high energy or getting into things or showing nuisance behaviors. People have the misconception that getting a second dog will keep the first one busy and they'll have less to deal with. That couldn't be further from the truth - at best, you have two untrained dogs, at worst, you're dealing with aggression issues or them choosing to blow you off at times it matters most whenever they're around each other. Especially if they're both young dogs!

People underestimate how much dogs are able to learn from each other. It's highly likely that if a smart new pup watches the old dog get a treat for sitting, they just might try it too. Have the dog you already have be an excellent role model before adding on another companion into your household!

You should consider getting your dog accustomed to safety equipment whether or not you use it regularly.

Elizabethan collar (cone of shame): don't wait until your dog is uncomfortable and sick to add in new equipment that could add on additional stress into the equation. Being sick sucks - don't stress your dog out more adding in equipment that they're unfamiliar with.

Muzzles: Same concept as above applies - the best time to introduce new equipment is under the best circumstances. Muzzle training is smart for any dog, not just those who are aggressive or reactive. Any dog, no matter how sweet and friendly, can bite under extreme pain or stress. Better to have your dog muzzle trained if something went wrong in order to protect both your dog and vet staff than wish you did.

Crates: Crates are the safest way to travel, and are used by a lot of vets and groomers. Even if you don't use crates regularly at home, it's good for your dog to feel comfortable in one. Crates are also required in a lot of emergency situations, so better to be prepared!

Field trips are an important part of learning! Doesn't matter how well a dog does in the comfort of his kitchen when you have a treat in your hand. You should be able to take your dog places and for walks and actually enjoy your dog!

Collin and Yana took him to a local park to work him around bigger distractions. We're incredibly proud of Link for how far he has come. He has tremendously grown in confidence and the ECollar has been a great tool for him. We're excited to keep working with him and his family!

It's important for puppies to get exposure to different things in order for them to grow up to be stable and confident individuals. Nothing has proven that more than the dogs dog trainers worked post COVID shutdown. Many young dogs were stuck at home, didn't get to experience the things the world has to offer, and once they were able to finally get out and about, many ended up being reactive or fearful.

Here are some things to expose puppies to for them to learn the world is nothing to have big feelings about, while focusing on engagement:

- Different kinds of people: men with beards, different clothing including poofy winter jackets and hats, people in wheelchairs, kids
- Stable dogs you know are going to teach your puppies good manners - you wouldn't leave a kid with any random stranger, you shouldn't trust your dog with any random dog
- Different surfaces like slippery tile, moving surfaces, stairs, etc
- Various sounds: city life, trucks, fireworks
- Environments like dog friendly stores, car rides, parks, city construction

Remember - having good experiences is more important than having a lot of experiences!

George and Yana went to today and worked on heeling, recall, sits and downs, and showing off what a darn good boy should behave like!

George is with K9 Guide for our short-term Board & Train. This is an option we offer to our past clients if they need their dogs boarded, but still want to work on manners and obedience training. We work on everything we work on with regular B&T dogs, include them in our training rotation, and go on field trips! 🐾❤️

Anyone who has seriously participated in a sport knows the feeling of stepping out on the field and being READY TO GO. After regular repetitions of the same thing over and over again, your body is anticipating action. Not quite the same when you enter a library or a grocery store, huh?

Same applies to dogs. If you make the home a calm space, dogs will know to relax. If you regularly play tug or fetch in your living room, or roughhouse with your dog inside the house, don't be surprised if they're regularly offering rowdy behavior.

We are NOT telling you to not play with your dog! Play and exercise are very important. Just be clear about when it is and isn't appropriate!
