10 reasons you should ADOPT than shop

1. YOU ARE SAVING A LIFE
This may be the biggest reason of all. You’re giving a dog, cat, horse, or another animal, a second chance at life. In their past life, some may have been abused, abandoned, or had to fend for themselves on the streets.

2. Adoption is good for your wallet and soul
This leads to a financial reason why you should consider adopting shelter pets. As virtually all shelters spay or neuter the animals in their care, keep vaccinations up to date, as well as offer other services at a reduced cost, this will also save you some money.

3. You support a valuable community and charitable institution
It’s always good to show support and help out a local organization, and these shelters are providing a valuable service to the pets in their care, so by adopting one, you’re also contributing to the ongoing care of the animals left at the shelter.

4. You might find your Platonic soulmate
With thousands of shelters and so many pets who just want to be cared for, there’s a good chance you'll find the one that fits into your family just right. After spending time at a shelter, you may also find that the pet you fall in love with is completely different from the one you thought you wanted.

5. Pets are good for your health!
Not only do animals give you unconditional love, but they have been shown to be psychologically, emotionally and physically beneficial to their companions. Caring for a pet can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment and lessen feelings of loneliness. And when you adopt, you can also feel proud about helping an animal in need!

6. You’ll encourage others to adopt from shelters when they see how awesome your own pet
Not too long ago, adoption was rare but thanks to decades of advocacy and adoption is now the most popular way to obtain a new pet.

7. Another great addition to your family!

8. You don’t support backyard breeders
Thousands of dogs are kept under horrifying conditions in puppy mills and farms every year. When you adopt a dog, you are curtailing the income and supporting these backyard breeders thus promoting the welfare of animals.

9. You help prevent unwanted animals from being dumped
Most of these homeless dogs are abandoned by their former masters and are left to suffer helplessly on the streets. When you adopt a pet, you help house these poor animals.

10. You’ll improve their life and yours!
Adopting an animal need doesn't just help but support the health and wellbeing of the animal. Studies show that having a pet can help you live longer, whilst improving your overall happiness and health. Having a loyal companion also helps people with depression, stress, anxiety, and many other ailments.

5 Surprising Benefits of Adopting a Shelter Dog

1. That dog’s really going to love you

Okay, okay, all kinds of dogs love their people. This is not exclusive to shelter dogs. But it’s easy to project an extra-special feeling of gratitude and joy onto a grateful, happy dog who really needed you. “I think if you adopt a dog who’s had a less than perfect life, they are the ones who appreciate it the most when you give them a wonderful life with the attention, food, love, and training they crave,” says Trish McMillan, a professional dog trainer who spent nearly eight years working with the ASPCA’s New York City shelter and currently co-chairs the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants’ Shelter Division.

2. You’re helping dogs

When you adopt from a shelter, you’re giving a great home to a dog who needs one, but you’re also freeing up the facility and its people to care for more animals that need help. Plus, every dog that isn’t purchased from a puppy mill means there’s less incentive for irresponsible breeding, according to the Humane Society. “Puppy mill dogs have higher rates of inherited and infectious diseases, and the mothers of these puppies often suffer from inhumane breeding practices and inadequate care,” says Elizabeth Berliner, DVM, director of Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine.

3. You can skip the puppy stage

Lots of dogs in shelters are adults that have already spent time living with other families—often successfully. Nashville Humane Association executive director Laura Chavarria says about half the animals surrendered to her shelter come from families that can’t find pet-friendly housing, and others are brought in because of owners’ medical conditions or life changes. “The majority of the dogs that come to our facility do so because of issues in their humans’ lives,” she says. “These issues are beyond the dog’s control.” Because they’ve matured past the puppy stage, adult dogs are less likely to chew shoes and dig up your garden.

4. Many shelter dogs are already house-trained

Lots of adult dogs have been through the potty-training process, so they already know not to do their business in the house. That said, any dog dealing with a new living situation might be prone to accidents while they get their bearings, but at least adult dogs are physically capable of going a few hours between potty breaks; the Humane Society says that puppies can typically only be expected to wait an hour for every month of their age, so a six-month-old pup will definitely require nighttime outings.

5. You can adopt a puppy

If you really want to bring home a youngster so you can play a strong role in socializing and training it early on and get all those warm cuddles, you can still adopt. Chavarria says her shelter gets “oops” puppies from unspayed female dogs: “We see a lot of pregnant mother dogs or nursing moms that enter our adoption center.” Chavarria adds that the Nashville Humane Association has foster teams that take care of the puppies and mama dogs until they’re healthy and old enough to go out to adoptive families. Berliner confirms that puppies are often available for adoption. “It sometimes takes a little time and patience to find the one for your family, but shelters are a great place to get a new puppy.

⚠️ HARMFUL CONSEQUENCES CAUSED BY DOGS AND CATS ABANDONMENT ⚠️

The abandoning of pets has far-reaching consequences for the animals involved as well as for the community. Abandonment exposes dogs and cats to an uncertain fate, once on the streets they must fend for themselves and may suffer from hunger, thirst, injuries and diseases. As well as feeling distressed and confused because they have been left on their own in an unfamiliar place by their owner.

📣 DO NOT ABANDON YOUR PET! 📣

🐶: Abandonment Is Not An Option
If you feel the welfare of your pet is negatively impacted by your life situation and there does not seem to be a solution, you may need to rehome your pet. One option that should not be considered is to abandon your pet. Apart from the fact that this may be illegal, you have a duty of care towards your pet as its owner and should take the most humane option so that your pet has a new home and owner to take care of them for the rest of their life.

🐱: Rehoming your Pet
If rehoming your pet is unavoidable, you should look for a responsible, caring and permanent home. Friends and family may be a good place to start to look for a new home. A better alternative is to contact a reputable shelter or animal rescue organisation to ask if they can take in your pet for rehoming, trained staff will be able to take care of your pet until a new owner comes along to adopt your pet.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of animals turn out to be in shelters all throughout the globe. These animals are both rescued from the streets or dropped off on the shelter. Though quite a few those shelters offer excellent care and attention, there are nonetheless barriers to what they could do.

Animals, whether we are aware or not, play a huge role in our lives and in the environment. Therefore, it’s in our best interest to help them however we can.

Altruism aside, there are quite a few key reasons we should care for them. One reason is to prevent the spread of disease.

Diseases, such as rabies, pose a huge threat to humans. The disease is fatal to humans, as well as to the animals who carry it. Infected animals become aggressive and bite without provocation.

Rescuing animals helps prevent the spread of rabies by reducing the population of potential carriers in the wild. This reduces the chance of infected animals harming other people and animals in the community.

Advocate having to adopt a pet instead of shopping. There are many animals in shelters these days looking for permanent homes. Adoption improves their lives and allows animal shelters to take in more pets who need their help. Some shelters even give you a starter kit of blankets, toys, and other things you may need to care for your new pet.

"Promote Equality Equally"

Reading through several websites and articles on the internet about strays is pure torment. Imagine being switched with strays. How will us, humans who are privileged enough to rule the world handle their situations? Picture yourself laying on the cold ground of the roadside, starving and dehydrated. It will make you wonder "How do strays manage to survive despite their difficult situation?"

Strays are considered as rabid, dirty, and dangerous wild animals who are the cheapest— the lowest of the lows among all breeds. They are discriminated as if they're walking around carrying multiple incurable and disgusting diseases and curses when in fact, they are just roaming the streets to survive because just like humans, stray animals are also living creatures who require basic necessities such as food, water, and a shelter, to live. In some cases, they are slaughtered and eaten or sold to twisted people who trains them to fight other strays for betting. It's disappointing that many human beings consider strays as nothing but nauseating beings who aren't worthy of love and affection.

Look at those adorable and fluffy or huge and scary looking animals or those purebred well fed ones to be exact. Look at how people lose their brains trying to woo them. Isn't it funny how many people call themselves "animal or pet lovers" while neglecting strays they pass through every single day at the road? Even some animal shelters shows their hypocritical behavior where they only show purebred animals for adoption and for promotion of their campaigns for financial assistance. Just like how we are fighting to end racism, let's also start placing that thing we call "equality" when looking at animals. An animal can have any breed there is and still be able to show affection.

All living beings are equal no matter what their classification is. Animals are not far from humans who are capable of feeling emotions. Put a stop to discrimination. No animal deserves to suffer just because they don't fit in the standards of being an expensive pet for show. Animals are more than just accessories and security, taking them in means adding a new member into your families. Start the movement of promoting equality to all animals equally.

Let's start adopting instead of shopping! 🥰 A campaign appears a little boring without images and icons right? 🤔 The founders of Grab a Paw created the infographics below for more visual representation of our campaign! 🤩

One of our members conducted a survey with the question, "What should we do with strays?", and as shown on the pie graph, 61.5% of the respondents answered "Adopt them", 30.8% answered "Surrender them to animal shelters", and 7.7% answered "Leave them on the streets because they're dangerous".

It was difficult for some respondents to pick between the first top 2 choices but they managed to select an option after a short discussion. According to them, adopting a stray is only advisable to those who are willing to commit their lives taking care of their pets. According to a respondent who wants to stay unknown, "If they want to adopt, their pockets should be ready for their pet's medical bills, foods, and other necessities. Also, adopting an animal means taking in a new family member so if they don't have the means to properly take care of the strays they randomly choose to pick up, they should just surrender them to animal shelters."
