Here is Milo the GSD x.

He had a huuuge problem with pulling on the lead, to the point that he managed to drag me across the field.
His owners understand that he is a powerful dog and took the initiative to rectify the situation in a safe and affective way.

After a couple of minutes training on the prong collar his pulling is next to nonexistent. Prong collars are not a quick fix, they take correct usage and ongoing training. Milo took to it amazingly and it has made walks far more enjoyable for himself and his owners.

He continues to be his happy, d***y self 😅

It's wild that when trainers use the words: discipline, respect, or leadership, people (usually keyboard warriors on the internet who dont work with dogs) immediately jump to abuse.

Leadership does not mean we don't love dogs. On the contrary, it means that we respect, cherish, and value them. I lead my dogs and the dogs in my care so they have a happy, balanced, and fulfilling life.

I discipline them so they don't take it upon themselves. Discipline can look different to different dogs. Corrections will depend on the dog. A verbal NO can work with one dog where another dog needs an ecollar tap or leash check.

Respect goes both ways in relationships with dogs. They trust me to keep them safe, happy, out of harms way. A correction for them running into the road and teaching boundaries can save their life.

I've gotten some backlash from silly people who want to twist my words around. Especially when I say treat dogs with respect.

That's OK. They'll never understand the bond I have with these dogs. Anyone who knows me and who's worked with me understands, and that's what matters.

I'm more concerned with what the dogs think of me anyway. 🥰

Need more of this truth!

When does training start?

Training starts from the moment you get your dog. Be it a puppy or an adult, as soon as you are with your pooch the training begins.

Start small and progress together.

Any behaviours that you think are cute when they are little can turn into nightmares when they have grown.

16/04/2024

There is no magic button.

To train a dog to a good standard takes 2 things.
Time and effort.

Frequently people will comment on the behaviour of my dogs and ask 'oh wow, I'd love to get my dog to behave like that, it must be a breed thing'.

No, it takes hours upon hours of work.
Practice, repetition, corrections, rewards, leadership, guidance etc.

Teach your dog the behaviours you want them to show, they are not going to improve by themselves.

So get to it and improve your life and your dog's life!

Aggression, reactivity, biting...

These are nothing to be ashamed of, these are things to work through.

Some trainers can't/won't help with these issues.
We, on the other hand, love these types of issues.

Get in touch and we can help you push past the issue to a happier relationship with your dog.

Mind and body!

Taking your dog for a big walk is generally great, but always remember to work their mind too.

Mental training is one of the best things you can do for your pooch.
Get the brain games out and problem solve your way to a more content dog.

Hooray!! 🥳🎉

As it currently goes the use of E-collars is still allowed!!
Despite a lot of noise by the vocal minority, that is.

E-collars are a fantastic aid for dog training and I am proud to be a supporter and user of them.
Let's keep up the fight and show how they are used responsibly and ethically 😁

23/01/2024

Training time!

Love it or hate it, it is an essential part of dog ownership.

Doing a little bit of training with your pooch everyday can work wonders for their overall mental state and their general behaviour.

Sure, it can seem like a chore, especially after being at work all day. So instead, build it into your interactions with them.
Everything can be a training opportunity - from the moment you wake up, your dog is learning from you - are they learning good things or bad?
It's a bit like the Karate kid - Everything is Kung Fu....Everything is Dog Fu?

Behaviours won't magically fix themselves, throwing treats at the dog won't magically fix it either. Get into the action and let your dog know what the desired outcome is! 👍😁

Amazingly true!

Off lead dogs - The discussion.

I frequently have many conversations regarding dogs in all topics and situations, and the one that has come up a lot recently is the social perception and assumed consent of off lead dogs.

On my daily walks with my boys there have been a couple of people that I've passed and they have called out to me:
'Are your dogs on lead'?
I will respond:
'No, but they are under my control'.
(As a note, whenever I am going to be passing close to another walker, I will call my boys into a heel, which can make it difficult to see if they are on lead or not).

Now to break the question into parts.
I always approve of people asking if their dogs can interact with mine, as it shows they actually care and are responsible. It is a breath of fresh air in comparison to the people who let their dogs approach randomly with the excuse of 'it's ok, they're friendly' *sigh*.

My 1st issue is, would you class 'are your dogs on lead'? as a question of permission to approach or simply a question of their current status?
If it is a question of permission, they why not ask if they can approach rather than this, which can be filled with ambiguity? If it is a question of current status, then why does it matter? (For reference, they owners who have asked this question will have their dog off lead, somewhat near them).
It shouldn't matter what state my dogs are in, as long as I have control of them and they are not interacting with others.

This is something that definitely goes amiss with a large amount of owners, but I feel needs to be a strong point.
You do whatever you are doing with your dogs, and I will do whatever I am doing with mine, but there is rarely a reason the two situations need to mix.

But, I have deviated slightly from topic. Social perception and implied consent - Does letting your dog off lead give implied consent to other dogs and their owners that you're happy to be approached?
I will always say no to that. My dogs being off lead (and in control) is their reward for being trained well. They have earned the right to be off lead and running around, with the understanding that if they abuse that right, they will lose it and return to being on lead.
In no way should it indicate to others that I want their dog approaching.

I think some of this will come from being in this profession, and seeing the potentially bad situations that can occur when stranger dogs meet. It definitely makes you more aware.
It does make you think though. What about an off lead dog would make someone assume they (or their dog) can have access to them?

Using the same logic of and off lead dog grants access, does me being outside grant people access to me? Or if you are walking with a child, but not holding their hand - does it give people access to your child??

So it has happened...

The government have yet again failed to actually do right by the dogs and have gone for the kneejerk reaction rather than holding owners and backyard breeders accountable.

From the gov website:

*Following a concerning rise in attacks and fatalities caused by XL Bully dogs, the government has added this breed to the list of dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

To help current owners adapt to the new laws, these changes will come into force in 2 stages.

From 31 December 2023 it will be against the law to:

sell an XL Bully dog
abandon an XL Bully dog
give away an XL Bully dog
breed from an XL Bully dog
have an XL Bully in public without a lead and muzzle

From 1 February 2024 it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England and Wales unless you have a Certificate of Exemption for your dog.

You will need to adhere to strict rules such as microchipping your dog and keeping it on a lead and muzzled when in public.

You will also need to neuter your dog. If your dog is less than one year old on 31 January 2024, it must be neutered by 31 December 2024. If your dog is older than one year old on 31 January 2024, it must be neutered by 30 June 2024. We recommend that you arrange for your dog to be neutered as soon as possible to ensure that you meet these deadlines.

Alternatively, if you are an owner of an XL Bully, you may decide not to keep it, in which case you should take your dog to a registered vet to euthanise it. There will be a compensation scheme towards the cost of euthanasia if you choose this option.*

I can't express how idiotic this is and how many lives are going to be affected.
If you have an XL bully you need to act fast and submit your claim for exemption. This end date for this is 31st January 2024, so you have just shy of 2 months!!!!

If you need help with sizing and sorting a muzzle then just drop us a message and we will help you free of charge!
Lets save as many as we can!

The team and how they got here

Mark

I grew up alongside 2 Golden Labradors, starting at the age of 13 (which was all the way back in 2002). Since then my love of dogs, and training them, has grown and grown. As I got older I always had it in mind to start a dog training company and see where things could lead. After a motorcycle accident, which left me with some minor injuries, I decided it was the right time.

I currently hold Higher Distinction Level 3 awards in Dog Training, Puppy and Dog First Aid and Canine Communication.
