Culsalmond Bassets and Bloodhounds We have had a bloodhound for 2 years and what a whirlwind she has been.

We have owned bassets for almost 18 years as mainly pets but have taken the plunge into the dog show world and our latest basset addition will start showing in May.

Well it was a good results kind of weekend at Leeds championship show. Edna was on first and only went and won her limit class which earned her stud book number. She then got 2nd in open which was another fantastic result. Then to top it off was pulled in to challenge for the reserve cc and was awarded it. Couldn’t be happier with how she went today. Amazing the difference in her over the past 6 months. Then it was Vera’s turn where she won her limit class but sadly no reserve cc for her. Maybe next time.

Well the girls had a great day out yesterday at the bloodhound club championship show. Both girls behaved and showed really well. Vera won her class of post graduate and Maeve got a 3rd in open. Then Vera went onto win the best movement girl trophy which Maeve won last year. Very happy with how the went considering Vera’s been a handful recently but suspect just hormones settling down after a season. Then by some miracle made it home from baginton in under 7 hours. Big thank you to the committee for a well run show and to our judge Susan LaCroix Hamil from the USA

Well a great day today at the Perthshire canine club show. I had a nice start to the day stewarding for the breakaway hound groups. Whilst I was doing that Diane had Edna in the basset hound open and got second place. The main thing is her movement was much improved on grass and walked instead of frolicked. Then I had Vera in Avnsc where she won her class and then won best avnsc sadly nothing in the hound group but then in a good mixed open stakes class Vera only went and got 2nd which was a great result. There was also a companion show run along side where Vera got 4th prettiest girl (judge must have been blind to only give her 4th 🤣) then 3rd in Junior then Edna won 4th in a large hound class. The super star of the day though was our occasional house whippet Otis who won RBIS at the companion show. Not bad for a sighthound 🤣. A huge thank you to all the committee for their hard work and the judges for thinking so much of our girls.

Well Edna and Vera had a fantastic day out at the hound association of scotlands championship show today. Vera was up first and went from junior all the way to win best avnsc and got her first green and first red card. Then Edna was up and she went fabulously to win open and the the reserve best girl basset and got her first green card. Then Vera was back in a large good citizen class (mainly ridgebacks) and only went and got 4th against some very good dogs. A big thank you to the judges for thinking so highly of our girls and the committee for their hard work.

Well it’s been a year we have had Vera home and what a year it’s been. We have been up and down the country to trials or shows, attended meet the breed days meeting the public and she has taken it all in her stride. She has such a lovely temperament and is so quiet. Apart from when asleep. A massive thank you to her breeders Betsy and Renee for allowing and trusting us with her.

Well crufts was a great day for us. Vera got a first in junior then first in good citizen. Maeve got a first in open then in the challenge only went and won the bitch challenge certificate (top female bloodhound) for the second year running. Unfortunately beaten in the best of breed against the dog but she went really well so certainly can’t complain.
Unfortunately nothing for Edna in her class but can’t win them all. But she did collect her Diamond health certificate so didn’t leave empty handed.

All washed and groomed ready for today’s big road trip ahead of their day out tomorrow.

A super day out at the east of Scotland canine club show at the SNEC. Stewarding in the working ring in the morning before jumping over to show Edna who was only interested in hoovering up treats off the floor. Then Vera was up who went and won any variety not separately classified post graduate. Then she beat the avnsc open dog and to top it off only went and won hound group 1. Then went into best in show and she showed her socks off and couldn’t be prouder of her but nothing for us today but beyond delighted with her. A huge thank you to our judge Lisa Reid for thinking so highly of our little girl.

Well first show of the year at Bon Accord Kennel Association and what a day. Edna won her class then was beaten by the open winner. Maeve got 3rd in avnsc open but Vera had a fantastic day. Won her avnsc post grad class then beat the winner of the open for best avnsc. Then she went onto win hound group 2. Then hound any variety Junior then she only went and won reserve best junior in show. I was happy winning her avnsc class everything else was just amazing. Thank you to our judges Bert Easdon and Kevin Young. And Erica Mathews who judged the basset class.

Merry Xmas to everyone from myself and the pack. Been another fun filled and at times quite stressful year. We started the year off with the excitement of Vera coming although that was quite stressful at times but we couldn’t be happier with her and she settled in nicely. We had fun at shows with the three girls Maeve, Edna and Vera doing well. Also had fun working Maeve and getting Vera her working permit ready for the trials next year. We also sadly found out that after having a few seizures Dudley has lafora’s but she is on treatment and seems to be responding well. A massive thank you to the breeders of our girls who have supported and helped us and mostly allowed us to have one of their lines. Also to everyone else for the company traveling to shows, for the amusement and laughs at shows and training classes and the encouragement to keep showing and working when things go awry. Wouldn’t be the same without you all. Hope everyone has a fantastic Xmas and a good new year.

Decided we needed to get back to practicing so did a 1/2 mile line 30 minutes cold and Vera absolutely smashed it. A deer and Going past our house didn’t put her off even slightly. She charged round as much as I could and whilst I was catching up she worked the ground and as soon as I was caught up off she tore. Really gonna need to get fit to do her justice.

Well a different kind of day for the girls today. We had a trip down to Glamis castle to meet The Fife Bloodhounds who were having a St Hubert’s hunt and blessing of the hounds. The hunting is clean boot so the hounds are hunting a cross country runner. It was great to see all the hounds and to see it so well supported. The Scottish field were there doing a piece on them so will have to keep an eye out for that. Then we had a basset waddle however due to an exceedingly busy car park and a mountain of things to do before going on holiday it was decided that we should just go home.

Well a pleasant day at the hound association of Scotland open show today in Beith. Starteroff with handling Otis in the Whippet dog post graduate class where we got a 5th out of 8 or 9. So chuffed with that as have never really handled him before and I was a last minute stand in handler. Then Edna was in her basset class unfortunately at the same time as Maeve was in her class so all Edna wanted to do was see what we were up to. Maeve won her class and went on to win best AVNSC. Edna got a 3rd in her class. But they were both back in for the scent hound open and Maeve got 1st and Edna went and got 2nd out of 7 or 8 so very happy with the results. The blowout on the way home less so but fortunately it was only 25 minutes from home and happened just before a layby and we have a spare tyre so no real drama.

Well it’s been a full weekend of showing. Saturday Vera went to Echt show where she won AV puppy, 3rd in Terrier and Hound, 1st Cutest puppy, 3rd prettiest bitch and won the best puppy in show. Then Sunday we went up to Inverness with Maeve, Edna and Vera. Vera got 3rd in hound avnsc pg and also won best special minor hound puppy. Then Edna had the cheek to beat Maeve in the hound avnsc open whilst being handled by a big thank you to you. But can’t complain about a first and second for Edna and Maeve. Then Maeve and Vera went and won the brace class. So all in all it was a good weekend for the gang.

Well we had a great day today at the Dundee canine club open show at Errol. Edna was first up and got a 1st in yearling. Then Maeve and Vera were up in hound any variety not separately classified. A massive thank you to Emma for handling Maeve to get the 1st and myself with Vera got 2nd but best puppy avnsc so both through to the hound group judging. Maeve with myself were shortlisted in the group which I was delighted by and then with Vera we got puppy group 3 so a fantastic result but more importantly Vera was almost well behaved whilst being Judged. Vera then got 2nd in av hound minor puppy and Maeve got a 1st in av hound open. A massive thank you to our judge for thinking so much of our girls.

Another day and another show. This time the roseisle companion show. Vera had a great day getting 4th in the puppy class. Then 4th in hound class. Then we went into some fun classes to get Vera used to lots of different things. She got 2nd in prettiest bitch then with her friend Otis handled by emma they got fist in the odd couple. She had a great time and loved all the attention and cuddles from lots of people.

Well little lady Vera is coming on really well at our ringcraft. Has gotten past the I’m going to trip you up stage and is moving really nicely. Her stacking is getting very good and she pays attention for the most part. Another fun show this weekend then the proper shows start the weekend after. But far more importantly is that she seems to enjoy the training and all the attention she gets. Still not overly keen on having her teeth checked but all work in progress.

Just some of this years critiques that we have had for the girls. Edna is coming along nicely and is starting to bulk up and Maeve is just her usual self. Hopefully next year will see her progress in the working trials and get the elusive 4th challenge certificate.

Some nice critiques from the midland basset championship show and Annandale open show.
