This week, our dog of the week is... The Cocker Spaniel! 🐾

Did you know:
▪️ Cocker Spaniels are bouncy, playful, active dogs and popular family pets as well as working dogs
▪️ They are HIGH energy, the breed's name gives us insight to their original function - to hunt woodcock!
▪️ They are intelligent and eager to learn. Like all dogs, they have a super sense of smell but, because of their original job, Cocker Spaniels have particularly excellent sniffing abilities! A Cocker Spaniel was in fact the first cancer-detecting dog
▪️ Two strains of Cocker Spaniels exist today. Working Cockers, which as the name suggests have been primarily bred for their working ability, and Show Cockers where breeders over time have focussed on the looks and general temperament, with less interest in stamina.

What are your Cocker Spaniel's favourite activities? 🐶

Grapes and raisins can cause severe kidney problems in some dogs, though we don’t know exactly why. Recently the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center suggested that tartaric acid may be the part of grapes that cause them to be toxic to pets, but more research is required.

Not all dogs seem to be affected by this, however for some dogs, it only takes a very small amount to cause problems. We do know that dried forms of grapes - such as raisins, sultanas and currants - seem to be more toxic to dogs. Because of this, extra care should be taken with foods like mince pies, fruit cakes and hot cross buns, as dogs can find them very tasty!

What are the signs of grape and raisin poisoning?
In severe cases, symptoms can come on very quickly, but normally they take between 24 and 72 hours to start. They include:
▪️ Vomiting
▪️ Diarrhoea
▪️ Changes in drinking and weeing
▪️ Drooling
▪️ Lack of appetite
▪️ Weakness/wobbliness
▪️ Excessive tiredness
▪️ Blood in wee, vomit or poo

The best thing to do is to contact a vet as soon as possible. It can be helpful to take the food packaging with you to show the vet.

You sometimes hear of one therapy dog, but this is a duo team of labradoodle siblings – aiming to help children one tail wag at a time!

This pair of Labradoodles called Mac and Millie are specially trained therapy dogs.

They are currently helping pupils at Fleming Fulton School and Harberton School with all aspects of their learning, and to develop their communication, motivation and social skills.

Both Mac and Millie were trained by Assistance Dogs Northern Ireland and have been working in the schools for a few months.

Thankfully the two schools are next to each other so the furry siblings can keep in touch!

The staff report the dogs help as quiet, non-judgmental companions who help with all aspects of learning from school room to the children's physio sessions too. We think this wonderful pair deserve a superdog title!

14/07/2022

Socialising your puppy teaches them how to behave and interact appropriately with humans and other dogs. This is really important for their long term wellbeing!

The breeder has an important role to play in providing socialisation opportunities until puppies leave for their homes.

An enriched, stimulating environment with plenty of items for the puppies to explore, as well as regular human contact and handling are fundamental for optimum puppy development.

If you are focused on socialising your pup before they are fully vaccinated, try these tips:
🐶 Puppies can be carried out-and-about during this time so they can watch activity and the world around them
🐶 Sit with them on the front doorstep and feed them a treat every time a person, dog, cyclist etc appears
🐶 Take them out for short car journeys to watch a different part of the world from a safe environment
🐶 Take a bed or blanket and sit in a coffee shop, or place a picnic mat in a park away from other dogs - this will enable lots of new experiences for your pup!

The best thing you can teach your puppy is that they will always be safe around you - concentrate on building trust and engagement with you throughout the process of socialising them.

Meet Thelma! She is a 2 year old Cocker Spaniel 🐾

What she likes: her family and friends, running and playing, especially if a squeaky ball is involved! She also loves an ear massage and using her nose to follow scents .She is very partial to applying 'Eau de Fox Poo’ if she thinks she can get away with it!

What she dislikes: She really isn't a fan of baths, getting her teeth brushed, strangers, and some teenage boy dogs!

Thelma was from the RSPCA so we don’t know her family history but we think she is more of a Working Cocker strain. She’s very intelligent but a bit of an overthinker and her energy has to be channelled into the right things - It has taken some time to find her ‘off switch’! She has just started agility training and is loving it.

Any dog can get heat stroke but there are definitely dogs who are more prone to it!

In one study, brachycephalic (flat faced) dogs like French bulldogs, English bulldogs, Dogue de Bordeaux and pugs represented a high proportion of dogs taken to the vets because of exercise related heat stroke.

Other dogs who may struggle include thick or long coated dogs, elderly or young dogs, dogs who have underlying health conditions and overweight dogs.

Be extra vigilant with these but don’t think that your short haired, lean dog isn't at risk – still take precautions to keep them cool.

This week, our dog of the week is... Staffies! 🐾

Did you know? 👇
🐾 The Staffordshire Bull Terrier shares the same ancestry as the Bull Terrier (Bulldog crossed with the Black and Tan terrier). However, since these early days, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has changed a lot - now they come in all kinds of shapes and sizes!

🐾 Despite being originally bred for fighting, the modern Staffordshire Bull Terrier is known for being people orientated and, when in the right hands, an excellent family dog.

Typical traits:
🐾 Staffies are a very popular pet in the UK and it is easy to see why – they are charismatic, strong and energetic.

🐾 These dogs do require lots of mental stimulating, positive training and exercise to keep them occupied – but at night, many love nothing more than to snuggle up with the family on the sofa!

🐾 They can be known for being vocal – with a typical staffy ‘chatter’ when they get over excited.

Who here owns a Staffordshire bull terrier – tell us a little more about them below!👇

What can you do to help your dog in the heat?

Problems arise when dogs over heat and their body can no longer regulate their body temperature to cool them. Remember dogs can't sweat, they cool themselves by panting.

1. Dogs should NEVER be outside where they have no access to shade. They should always have access to plentiful cool, clean water. Inside should be well ventilated with access to water. Some dogs may even enjoy a fan or a cool paddling pool in the summer!

2. Dogs should not exercise excessively in the heat of the day, or go on long walks where there is little rest or shade in excessive heat. Some dogs are more prone to heat-related illness and next week we will tell you who is most at risk

3. Walk your pooches in the morning and late evening before the sun warms up, always take plenty of water to allow them to drink and try to keep them calm as possible ( avoid constant ball chasing for example).

New evidence suggests that breed of your dog doesn’t explain why they act the way they do!

After examining data from more than 18,000 dogs, researchers have reached an interesting conclusion: breed doesn’t necessarily determine why they behave the way they do!

The findings indicate that no behaviour is unique to any one breed and that there is a lot of variability in behaviour within breeds too.

Having said that, some common traits were found to be more heritable than others, such as howling and the disposition to retrieve objects.

One researcher Morrill stated: “For example, Siberian huskies are much more likely to howl than any other dogs,”

What does your dog do that’s quite typical of their breed? Let us know in the comments below!

Grass seeds might look small and harmless but they can be a big problem for our furry friends, especially during the spring and summer months.

Seeds are dart shaped and the pointy end is exceptionally sharp. After becoming trapped in your dog's fur they can pe*****te into the skin or move into their ears.

Unfortunately, once a seed has travelled under the skin, surgery is often required to remove it. So the best bet, is prevention!

It’s a very worrying time when your dog is injured or falls ill, which is why pet insurance is so important! It helps you cover the cost of veterinary treatment, giving you peace of mind your dog can access the care they need.

However, here are some important points to keep in mind:

▪️ Insurance companies generally cover accidents and illness, with some also covering dental treatment. It is very important to read the terms and conditions so you know what is included in that particular policy and what isn’t.

▪️ Preventative healthcare such as vaccinations and flea and worm treatments are not covered.

▪️ Pre-existing medical conditions are usually excluded.

▪️ There is an excess to pay when you make a claim, the amount varies between policies.

We know that insurance terminology can be a bit confusing. Not all pet insurance is the same, there are many different types of policy available and the level of cover can vary considerably.

To help you choose the right one for your dog, we've prepared a guide to pet insurance policy - stay tuned for tomorrow's post! 🐾

31/05/2022

If your dog's eye is close or weepy, it should not be ignored. Sight is precious and some eye conditions become harder to cure if not treated quickly.

Here below are five causes of closed or weepy eyes:

1. Injury to the eye
Blunt trauma can sometimes be very serious. Your vet will examine your dog's eyes for signs of scratches, damage to the deeper tissues, bleeding and inflammation in the eyeball itself - all of which require treatment.

2. Something in the eye
Dogs can get thing stuck in their eyes (foreign bodies). If the foreign body is tucked under one of your dog's three eyelids (yes, dogs have three!), then hopefully it can be removed easily. This may require local anasthetic or sedation. Sometimes a foreign body like a thorn can scratch the ye, causing a corneal ulcer.

3. Eye infections
Dogs can get infections in their eye or eyes which causes inflamation of the eye lids (conjunctivitis). Weeping is usually sticky. Treatment is often straightforward, but if left untreated, conjunctivitis can lead to more serious conditions.

4. Dry eye
The eyes and eyelids needs tears for moisture and nourishment. Some dogs don't produce enough tears (called 'dry eye'). In later stages dry eyes become sore, red, and cloudy with a sticky discharge.

5. Glaucoma
Glaucoma is increased pressure in the eye. The eye can look bluish, cloudy, and may be closed or weepy. Glaucoma if often due to an inherited defect but can be secondary to other eye conditions. It is extremely painful.

23/05/2022

Sadly, there has been an increase in bogus puppy sellers. These range from puppy farms, backyard breeders or foreign imports that are marketed as ‘rescues’ but are anything but.

Here are the 6 red flags when buying a puppy:

1. The breeder offers multiple puppies of different breeds and ages all at the same time. This could mean they are keeping a large number of breeding bi***es all at once or are getting their puppies from a puppy farm.

2. They do not invite you to see mum and puppies and offer any kind of delivery service. Meeting you ‘halfway’ may appear a kind offer but can be because they do not want you to see the living conditions of the dogs – ALWAYS go and visit mum and puppies.

3. The breeder doesn’t produce any proper health and vaccine paperwork when you go to collect the puppy. If you have no paperwork do not take their word that the vaccinations have been done.

4. By law all puppies MUST be microchipped before they leave the breeder – if your puppy hasn’t been then this is a red flag.

5. People selling cropped eared puppies – this is illegal in the UK and an unnecessary and painful mutilation of puppies. Do not support this trade in any way.

6. People selling dogs from abroad but producing no health testing or travel documents. Puppies from abroad can sadly carry some concerning diseases – as such they should have full health testing documents and travel documents prior to importing. There is now a huge market for illegal imports and these puppies and their parents have experienced terrible conditions and could be extremely sick. It is best to be very cautious with these.

Dogs can vomit for many reasons. Often the cause is nothing serious, but some causes of vomiting require urgent veterinary attention.

Here are the major causes of vomiting in dogs:

1. Food is too rich or unfamiliar - rich or unfamiliar food can irritate your dog's stomach. This can be mild - your dog might be sick and then be fine - or more severe, causing your dog to need veterinary treatment.

2. Food sensitivities - your dog might have a particular sensitivitu to a certain food. A sensitivity might cause vomiting over a longer period, especially if the thing your dog is sensitive to is something they are fed regularly.

3. Toxic Foods - Dogs might eat food that are fine for us, but toxic to them, like chocolate. This can cause vomiting as well as risking dangerous toxic effects.

4. Foreign objects - Dogs sometimes eat things that are not food and are not broken-down by their stomach (we call them 'foreign bodies' which are things like sticks, bones or plastic toys). These can block the gut as they move through the digestive system.

5. Medications - certain medicines can cause vomiting as a side effect. Often this is nothing serious, but it is best to discuss it with your vet.

If you have any concerns with regards to your dog please make sure to call your vet as soon as possible!

Now that you’ve found your breeder, it's time to visit the mum and her puppies!

Here are three to check when you visit the breeder:

1. Check for signs that this is where the puppy was raised such as a whelping pen or play pen, food bowls, bedding and toys and check that all the litter appears alert and healthy.

2. When you do take your puppy home it should be at least 8 weeks old, if you have any worries about the age or health condition of the puppy then do not buy that puppy.

3. By law, puppies should be microchipped before leaving the breeder, so make sure this is going to get done before you pick up your puppy.

If you have worries about a breeder or the environment puppies are being raised in then please do not buy the puppy – raise the alert with your Local Authority Trading Standards.

Congratulations on your new little bundle of fluff!

Here are our top tips for toilet training your brand new pup.

1. Frequently take you pup outside, they learn best if they are not given the opportunity to go to the toilet inside. This means every 45 minutes plus after eating or drinking.

2. Punishing a puppy for having an accident inside can actually lead to further problems so it is not recommended.

3. Avoid using puppy pads as the puppy will learn to go to the toilet in the house rather than outside.

If you need some more support, don't forget you can hop over to our app and read our blogs, or book an affordable, convenient appointment with one of our expert vets.
