First off, what is kennel cough?
Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease which dogs often catch at places where there are large groups other dogs. E.g. boarding and daycare facilities, dog parks, training groups, and dog shows. This is why the kennel cough vaccination is so important!
Lots of dogs however can find the kennel cough vaccination a little bit stressful, but thankfully, training them through positive reinforcement can change this!
Here is a step-by-step guide to help your dog familiarise themselves with the syringe and make the vaccination a much less stressful process for them:
Step 1
Grab your dogs favourite treats and a pen/syringe (your vet may be able to give you one to practice)
Step 2
Introduce the object in a positive and fun way like throwing some treats down around it!
Step 3
Get your dog comfortable being on their side
Step 4
Teach your dog to nose touch by holding your hand out as a target and reward them with a treat when they touch your hand.
Step 5
This can now be transferred to the pen/syringe
Step 6
Now get your dog to do the same on their side and step by-step slowly start introducing the syringe in their nose
Step 7
Now try doing it with air in the syringe
Don’t forget that the kennel cough vaccination process still has to be administered by a vet - this is just a positive reinforcement training to help your dog feel less stressed when they have to come in for the vaccination!
