Dogs are incredibly resilient creatures, but they also have their limits.

When a dog repeatedly tries to communicate discomfort or distress through subtle signals like yawning, lip licking, or avoiding certain activities, and those signals go unnoticed or ignored, they may feel compelled to escalate their behaviour to be heard.

This can manifest as growling, snapping, or biting – behaviours that are often misunderstood as aggression - when they are, in fact, desperate attempts to communicate.

By learning to recognise and respond to these signals, we can prevent potentially dangerous situations and foster better communication with our canine companions.

Our book Why Don't You Listen talks all about the signs of distress a dog might show, and is presented in a fun and engaging way. Aimed at children but great for the whole family!

You can purchase the book here:

Knowledge about dog behaviour is important. It's a no brainer. But why? 🤔

Well, understanding dog behaviour is crucial in effective dog training for several reasons. A deep knowledge of canine behaviour allows trainers & behaviourists to create effective, humane, and tailored training programmes. Here are the primary reasons why this knowledge is essential:

⚠️ Understanding Canine Communication.

Dogs communicate primarily through body language and vocalisations. A deep understanding of these communication methods helps to interpret what a dog is feeling or intending, which is crucial for effective training.

Body Language. Knowing the nuances of a dog’s body language, such as tail position, ear orientation, and posture, can indicate whether the dog is relaxed, anxious, or aggressive. For instance, a wagging tail doesn't always mean a dog is happy; the context and type of wag are important indicators of the dog's emotional state.

Vocalisations. Different barks, growls, and whines have distinct meanings. Recognising these sounds allows trainers to respond appropriately to a dog’s needs and emotions, facilitating better communication and training outcomes.

⚠️ Addressing Behavioural Issues.

Behavioural issues such as aggression, anxiety, and excessive barking can stem from various causes, including fear, territoriality, or past trauma. Understanding the root causes of these behaviours is essential for developing effective intervention strategies.

Anxiety. Recognising signs of anxiety and understanding its triggers (e.g., separation anxiety, noise phobia) helps in designing desensitisation and counterconditioning programmes to alleviate the dog’s stress.

⚠️ Understanding the importance and relevance of health and wellbeing vs behaviour.

Physical & mental health do impact dog behaviour more than people realise. Considering possible pain, discomfort, nutrition, appetite amount of physical activity and mental health is absolutely critical before any training can start.

⚠️ Implementing Positive Reinforcement Techniques.

A comprehensive knowledge of dog behaviour supports the use of positive reinforcement techniques, which are based on rewarding desired behaviours to encourage their repetition.

Timing and Consistency. Understanding the importance of immediate and consistent reinforcement helps trainers effectively shape and reinforce desired behaviours. This is critical as dogs learn best when there is a clear and immediate connection between their behaviour and the reward.

Motivation. Knowing what motivates a particular dog, whether it’s food, toys, or affection, allows trainers to tailor their approach to each dog’s preferences, making training more effective and engaging.

⚠️ Building Trust and Relationship.

Effective, kind and modern dog training is built on a foundation of trust between the dog and the trainer. Deep knowledge of dog behaviour helps in establishing this trust by ensuring that training methods are humane and respectful.

Avoiding Negative Methods. Understanding the detrimental effects of punishment and negative reinforcement encourages trainers to avoid these methods, which can damage the dog-trainer relationship and lead to fear or aggression.

Empathy and Respect. Recognising and respecting a dog’s individual temperament and limits fosters a positive training environment, enhancing the bond between the dog and the trainer.

⚠️ Customising Training Programs.

Dogs, like humans, have individual personalities and learning styles. Knowledge of dog behaviour enables trainers to customise training programmes to suit the specific needs and characteristics of each dog.

Breed-Specific Traits. Different breeds have distinct behavioural traits and predispositions. For example, herding breeds may require more mental stimulation, while scent hounds may need activities that engage their sense of smell.

Individual Differences. Beyond breed traits, individual dogs have unique personalities. Some may be more timid or excitable than others. Tailoring training to these individual differences ensures more effective and humane outcomes.

⚠️ Preventing and Managing Problem Behaviours

Understanding the natural behaviours of dogs helps in preventing and managing problem behaviours before they become ingrained.

Early Intervention. Recognising early signs of behavioural issues allows for timely intervention, preventing the escalation of undesirable behaviours.

Environmental Management: Knowledge of dog behaviour informs environmental management strategies, such as providing adequate exercise, mental stimulation, and safe spaces, which are critical for preventing behavioural problems.

Lack of respect is disrespectful, but in defense of dogs, I’m not sure if they actually understand what respect is and our human need to be respected by others. Obviously I’m a huge dog lover and I spend my life advocating for the humane treatment of these remarkable animals. I am constantly shining a light on their intelligence and encouraging people to understand their own dog’s wants and needs so they can better serve them. But I think it’s safe to say that even though our dogs are incredibly smart, they do not have the cognitive ability to understand what the human idea of respect means.

Some of the dogs I have trained too some at Animal Magic, Broadland dtc and the Norfolk Gsd club probably far too many 🤣 if you do have a look I would like to say that I am really proud of every one of them but the ones I get the most satisfaction from are the ones in my adult social class. Aka the antisocial class. All these dogs are very reactive but the relaxed way we end up all being able to walk together and even get in the same photo at the end of four weeks is somewhat miraculous ( the pictures of the groups outdoors)They start off not even being able to be in the same paddock to start with but although it’s the most boring class I do I think it’s the most worthwhile. All we do is show the owners a few tricks and tips to help their dogs feel more comfortable around the others , give them plenty of space to just be around others and allow them to watch and learn from each other. It doesn’t work for all but it does for most and the owners work their socks off which is lovely to see.
All of it is absolutely force free

Hello again everyone it’s been a long while since I posted on here the last few months have been incredibly difficult, mum had a really nasty fall last October and so I moved in with her and stayed for about 6 months in all she was so poorly, she is doing much better now and so I could move home, a few days later my beloved Rufus had to have an emergency splenectomy and was diagnosed with a really aggressive cancer so I really needed to be home to make sure his last months were as happy as possible and we hopefully managed that until he passed away. Couple of weeks later we were faced with going through the same thing with Tara but she was too poorly to operate to remove hers and we had her for exactly a week after her diagnostic scan before we had to say good bye to her too. We are still here tho battling on and obviously I had work already booked in so I have done that in between nursing poorly humans and dogs, I am now taking more work on and am pretty much full for the rest of the summer but there is some availability for November December if anyone fancies some winter sun or a ski trip. What’s App me as usual 😃

Hi everyone sorry I haven’t posted anything in quite a while. Unfortunately my 89yr old mum had a very serious fall in October and I am now caring for her at home Yesterday I had some awful news about Rufus one of my dogs. He had major surgery on Monday to remove his spleen, he had two tumours and they had ruptured so he was bleeding internally so he had an emergency op Monday evening and they sent his spleen off to the lab. The results came back and yesterday I found out he has hermangiosarcoma which is a cancer of the lining of his blood vessels. This is a really nasty aggressive one and although it hadn’t appeared in his chest or liver the likelihood is that it has already spread. He has upto about 3 months but could be more or less .
Because of these circumstances I have decided not to take on any more dog sitting for the time. I will honour the ones already booked up at this point in time as it wouldn’t be fair to cancel them now.
I do need to spend some time with both of them especially Rufus so I hope you understand 😊

Just cos it’s another manic Monday and I am busy. The boys have a hoof to keep them occupied 😊
