Happy National Microchipping Month! Here are some facts about microchipping that are very important, mostly if you live here in Okinawa! If you have any questions about microchipping, please contact the Kadena Vet Clinic or check out their page Okinawa Veterinary Activity! 🐾🐾🐾
***All dogs and cats belonging to SOFA status personnel are required to be microchipped and registered at the Kadena clinic, regardless of whether they live on or off base***
- The microchip is about the size of a large grain of rice and is universally implanted between a pet's shoulder blades (though it often migrates over time)
- The *ONLY* information contained on a microchip is a 15-digit number. This is tied to a series of databases and it is the owner's responsibility to maintain current contact information is registered with a database management company so that their animal can be reunited with them if it is lost or separated
- Some older microchips do not comply with the numbering system (15 digits) that is now the international standard. These chips can often still be 'seen' by many chip readers, but not all countries will accept them as valid.
- An animal is 2.4 times more likely to make it home if they are microchipped!

World Spay Day – February 22, 2022
Held on the last Tuesday in February each year, World Spay Day advocates spaying or neutering, which is an annual event created by Doris Day and the Doris Day Animal League in 1995!

"The day aims to spread awareness of the long-term health benefits of spaying and neutering your cats, dogs, and rabbits. Not only does it enable your furry friends to live longer as according to the Humane Society of the United States, but it also helps keep shelter and stray populations down."
