We thought we'd seen everything- we probably have- but sometimes it's still gets us in the gut and we have to take a minute to shake our head and wonder how we got here.
This week we found ourselves trapping a group of friendly young cats abandoned by their family. Following eviction. We approached the situation with empathy for the family because everyone can imagine how awful living through something like an eviction would be. Within 24 hours we learned that some of the cats were lactating, within 36 hours. As we learned that the family had very intentionally taken all of the kittens and left the mothers behind. This is where our empathy expired.
We presume these Mamas now dumped behind we're money makers + and the maybe 4 to 6 week old kittens piled in a laundry basket, cardboard box or carrier and taken on the road. While all personal effects were thrown into the front yard- probably $25 a piece payoffs. Likely will never get vaccines, likely will never be spayed or neutered- sure we sound judgmental but we are using the evidence of how the parents were found to determine our hypothesis.
We are now up three lactating female cats, all who seem to be 5 months old or younger. One male 5-month-old kitten and at least one more cat on site to trap. We have had few Foster's come forward and they are keeping us going through this crisis. However, we simply cannot help all of these animals without help from our community. We are posting our wish list to help offset the burden for our individual Foster's, one who separately just took seven kittens left in a carrier outside for over 24 hours with no food.
The season will be rough for all of us- partner rescues are already full. We are still looking for help and transfer if anyone is able.
