This is a dog with the sweetest nature, but lots of fear. She's very nervous when out, and is hyper vigilant, always on the lookout for other dogs.

To help desensitise her, we're just hanging out in one spot where she can see what's going on, but be far enough away to help her feel safe.

Do you have a dog like this? Let me know in the comments how your dog reacts, and what you do that helps.

Enrichment means creating ways for your dog to express his or her natural behaviours in an appropriate way.

Here are a few simple ways to enrich your dog’s life starting right now!

A hike or walk in a park on a longer leash. This gives him the chance to sniff and explore

Feed your dog his meal in a Kong or puzzle toy

Use a kid’s pool, large basin or even a litter box to make your dog a sandbox, then hide a toy in it and watch him forage

Set up an obstacle course – buy one online or make your own!

Make a ball pit and hide a treat or toy in it

What do you do to help your dog satisfy his needs?

Here’s what to do in order to prevent your dog guarding his food.

What does “guarding” mean? You’ll see your dog baring teeth, growling, barking and maybe even lunging when anyone gets too close to his food. The same behaviour can be observed when it comes to treats, toys and even people.

Grab a few treats, and as your dog is finishing his meal, drop a couple near his bowl then walk away. Do this a couple of times over the next few days.

You may see your dog look up when you approach, which means they see you coming as something positive.

Now when you drop the treats you’ll do it closer to the bowl, then walk away.

The next step will be not putting his entire meal in the bowl at once. You’ll wait until they finish what’s in the bowl, then add more.

All this is designed to teach your dog, good things happen when you’re close.

When I first adopted Jack, I could have ticked off most if not all of these boxes. Inside of this adorable 10lb white cutie pie, lived a dog that wasn’t afraid to go after any size dog or person he laid eyes on. When I say “go after” I mean teeth bared, straining against the leash and looking for something to chomp on.

The thing is…he was afraid and that’s why he behaved that way.

He came from an abusive home, never socialised and was terrified of everything. He showed that fear through what looked like aggressive and dangerous behaviour.

The great news is, with training, patience and consistency he was not only able to relax and enjoy his walks, he even made some doggie friends!

Enrichment is about providing for your dog's physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. The four items in this picture are ones I used to feed my most recent foster dog.

I love feeding this way because your dog can’t inhale his or her meal in seconds, it takes time. Especially when using a puzzle like the bone shaped toy, they need to use their brain to figure out how to get the food.

Bad breath in dogs is common, but is it normal?

While bad breath in dogs is not uncommon, it could be a sign not only of dental disease, but serious health issues such as liver or kidney disease. Please make an appointment to see your veterinarian sooner rather than later. The longer your dog is left untreated, the more difficult the problem could be to treat.

Does your dog have bad breath, have you found any products that help stop it?

What NOT to do when your dog’s barking is driving you crazy!!

1)Don’t yell. I know it’s instinct, but it’s probably making it worse

2)Don’t punish your dog using shock collars, sprays or other aversive techniques

Keep in mind barking is how dogs communicate, so the first step is understanding what your dog is trying to tell you.

The #1 reason your dog reacts “aggressively” on a leash is fear. He’s in a situation that scares him or causes anxiety, and being restrained (leashed) means he can’t get away from it.

Solution? The first step is to avoid putting your dog in those situations.

For example, if you notice your dog reacts when he’s within a certain distance of another dog, make sure you stay far enough away to avoid triggering him. The second step is to get professional help for a longer-term solution.

NOTE: If your dog is anxious around other dogs, walks may not be the best way to go. Seeing other dogs will just increase his anxiety levels so stick to exercising him or her in your backyard until you get advice from a trainer.
