Around here you will find dog beds in any room I will be found in. Even in the kitchen tucked in a nook lol This gives the dogs a space to take a toy and “go lay down” all the while being able to watch what is going on without being right under foot. Some times it’s with a stuffed toy or perhaps a juicy bone but they all know that when I’m busy in the kitchen or just enjoying a coffee on the couch that they need to go to a bed and relax.

Why get a trainer? Well way back when I bought my first Labrador retriever when I was 15 I thought how hard can this be? She was super adorable and smart. Boy was she smart. She figured out pretty quick I was too busy being her obedient slave to actually teach her any manners or respect. After she dragged me face first across the yard I had enough. Finding a local trainer geared specifically for labs I showed up and demanded he fix this broken dog of mine!( remember I’m 16 now and of course know it all😉)
Well he takes my dogs leash and says he will train her for free if I take any of his professionally trained highly titled labs out and demonstrate a basic heeling exercise. Of course I jump on the offer. Choosing a beautiful black male I can barely keep him from tangling me in his leash while I yell no and fume in embarrassment. Seeing my failure he calmly passed me back my dog and took his from me demonstrating easily a perfect heel. Walking circles around us. He then went on to take my dog back and within a few quick corrections had her heeling at his side while she wagged and looked on adoringly. Point taken..my dog was not broken it was I who lacked the right skills.
Several lessons together later and I haven’t looked back from my adventure into the dog training world.

Do you find yourself telling (or yelling) NO more than anything to your new pup? I prefer to work on the concept of telling them what I want them to be doing instead of just telling them no. For example I want them to stay away from the Christmas tree...and this year we have two new pups learning this.. I teach them leave it. Leave it is a very useful phrase and can be used on any item or place you want your dog to get away from. The dog gets positive praise for following your command and you keep your dog safe without saying no
