The presence of odor should be the cue for the dog to perform their trained response behavior. When a dog encounters the target odor they have been trained to locate, they should have a very clear understanding of 2 things:
-how close they should get to odor
-the exact response behavior they should perform when they reach that point

If you are not using a verbal marker/clicker as a terminal bridge to release your dog from their response behavior, when you move or begin to put treats or the toy in your hand preparing to deliver the reward to your dog, many dogs will break away from the odor in anticipation of their reward.

Your dog should stay in their response behavior position until they HEAR their release regardless of whether they SEE you coming or going or reaching for their reward. As with most things in dog training this is a concept that we show the dog and proof for clarity.

Using a marker allows us to precisely clarify proximity to odor source and then incrementally build duration of a predetermined response behavior before your dog is released to receive their reward from you.

If you are teaching a down stay, your dog should not break because you started to move towards them. Your dog should not break because you started to reach for a treat. Your dog should only get out of position from the down stay when they are released from it by you. The verbal marker/clicker is our signal to the dog that they are released from providing their response behavior and it lets them know that they are going to be rewarded.

Just like when teaching a down stay you should be mindful of the duration of the down stay and the distractions the dog must ignore while performing the down stay in order to properly and incrementally increase duration successfully without the dog breaking out of the position, the same is true when we are building duration of our dog’s response behavior in detection. Short repetitions of success lead to long duration!

It used to be a common belief that teaching a dog to have a specific response behavior could or would lower their motivation and thus should not be done with dogs that were not highly motivated working dogs. The reality is that many things we do with dogs can lower motivation if done INCORRECTLY.
I have found that the dogs with lower levels of motivation love the clarity provided by knowing exactly what they are supposed to do to be rewarded when they find odor as opposed to guessing or trying multiple different behaviors until one works and they are unsure which one it will be.

Nosework is an incredibly fun sport to train your dog in and a great way to improve the communication between you and your dog. It's a rewarding way to learn to enhance your dogs natural behaviour. Nosework can help a shy or fearful dog gain confidence, a high energy
dog learn impulse control and offer a reactive dog a safe place to work and learn independently.

A back clip harness and 6ft flat leash is required for class.

Dogs must be kept in your vehicle while not working.

Students will have an opportunity to continue onto Level 2 right away in a workshop with Doggone Smart Nosework,
February 25
& 26, 2023. Details coming soon!
