An animal control officer in Berkeley County, SC found Emmett wandering in the road on Friday, April 3, 2020 and brought him to Berkeley Animal Center. Emaciated with obvious broken bones and open wounds, shelter staff immediately sought a rescue organization to step up for this 5 year old beagle boy that needed extreme medical intervention. Happy’s Porch, animal rescue organization based in John’s Island, SC stepped up and brought him into their care.
Emmett was brought to Bees Ferry Veterinary Hospital where, upon physical examination, it was determined that Emmett was completely emaciated with a body condition score of 1 out of 9. He had a bone protruding from a wound in his right rear foot. Bloodwork determined Emmett to be anemic, heartworm positive, and to have sustained kidney damage. He also had a severe urinary tract infection as well as severe hookworm and whipworm infections. Radiographs revealed a dislocated hip and a broken toe in his right rear leg and broken tibia and fibula bones in his left rear leg. Emmett spent the first night at the hospital on IV fluids with a veterinarian sleeping just a few feet away and providing him with small portions of a recovery diet and sips of water every few hours. Emmett spent the next 6 days at the animal hospital while his care team established him on a strict protocol of multiple antibiotics, a liver protectant, a supplement to help his kidneys, a de-wormer, and pain medication. On Saturday, April 11, Emmett was stable enough to leave the animal hospital and go to a medical foster home where he will continue to be closely monitored and immensely loved.
Despite ALL of these issues, Emmett has remained gentle with an incredibly sweet demeaner and the kindest eyes. He is adjusting beautifully in his foster home and enjoys watching the other dogs and getting to experience what it’s like to “dog”. Emmett is in need of at least two orthopedic surgeries to help save his legs, which will need to be done with a specialist. His kidney disease is a major concern that his team is monitoring closely. When he is strong enough, Emmett will also need to undergo heartworm treatment. He has a long, hard road ahead of him but he has an amazing team cheering him on!
