Identifying and eliminating your pet’s trigger is an effective way to reduce excessive barking. To do this, observe your pet’s behavior and determine what environmental stimuli prompt them to bark.

Then, try to change or eliminate the trigger. For example, if your dog barks at people walking by your house, consider blocking their visual access to the window or door, or move their bed to another room.

Similarly, if your dog barks at the sound of the doorbell, try placing a sign on your door asking visitors to text instead of ringing the bell. By eliminating or changing the trigger, you can help your pet feel calmer and reduce their barking.

🦷😖 Dental disease can be incredibly painful for pets, but since they can't tell us how they feel, we may not realize there's a problem until it's too late.

Chronic pain and inflammation caused by dental disease can lead to behavioral changes like lethargy, irritability, and decreased appetite.

That's why it's important to schedule annual dental evaluations as part of your pet's regular preventive care exam.

A thorough dental procedure can help alleviate pain and discomfort, making your pet feel like a whole new animal!

🐾🧠 Pets need mental stimulation throughout their entire lives, not just when they're young. Encourage your adult pet to learn new tricks, solve food puzzles, and sniff out treats to keep their cognitive function strong.

🐶🐱 As pets age, they can suffer from cognitive dysfunction, which can cause anxiety and stress if they forget familiar faces, how doors open, or the location of their food bowl.

👍👵 Help your senior pet maintain their mental health by providing plenty of enrichment activities. Call 772-217-4771 to talk to your veterinarian for more information.

Did you know that dogs communicate primarily through body posture and facial expression? It's important to observe their entire body, not just one isolated part, to interpret their non-verbal messages accurately. Consider the context, including their environment and recent events, before drawing any conclusions.

🐞🌺 Pets love spending time in the garden, but be aware of potential toxins from insects and other wildlife!👀 Some insects, amphibians, and wild reptiles can have natural toxins that are harmful to pets.

🐍 Bees and wasps are common visitors that can cause pain at the sting site and even an allergic reaction in some pets. If your pet’s face starts to swell after a bee sting, take them to the vet for treatment.

🐶🐱 Protect your pets and enjoy the outdoors by being cautious and prepared.👍

🦟 Beware pet owners! Heartworms can be a serious threat to your furry friend's health.

😢 When a mosquito bites an infected dog, they ingest heartworm larvae, which can mature in the mosquito before being transmitted to the next pet the insect bites. In dogs, heartworms can mature to adulthood, mate, and produce offspring in their heart, causing significant health problems. While cats are atypical hosts, immature heartworms can still cause them health problems. 🐾

Providing year-round heartworm prevention is an important part of your pet’s health care plan.

If you would like to discuss the various preventives, contact our team at VMC IRC by calling 772-217-4771, so we can determine what protocol would best fit you and your pet’s lifestyle.

Did you know that dental treats for dogs are a great way to improve your pup’s oral health? Here are some reasons why:

1️⃣ Dental treats are made specifically to remove plaque buildup and clean your dog’s mouth.

2️⃣ They often contain ingredients that freshen breath and help maintain your pet's oral hygiene.

3️⃣ Dental treats come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and flavors, making it easy to find one your furry friend loves.

4️⃣ They are generally much more appreciated by our dogs than traditional toothbrushes or wipes.

Make sure to choose dental treats that are appropriate for your dog's size and needs. As always, talk to your vet about what dental care routine is best for your furry friend. Happy chewing! 🐾🦷

Teaching your dog to bark on command might seem like the opposite of what you want, but it can be a helpful step in training them to be quiet.

Let it out — First, find a stimulus that makes your dog bark naturally. It could be a knock on the door, a doorbell sound, or someone saying “Speak.” When your dog barks, reward them with praise and a treat.

Hold it in — Next, wait for a pause in the barking, say “Quiet” or another cue you choose, and offer a treat when your dog stops barking. Gradually increase the amount of time between barks before you give the “Quiet” cue.

Put it all together — Finally, practice the “Speak” and “Quiet” cues together until your dog can bark and then stop on command. This will give you more control over your dog’s barking and help them understand when it’s appropriate to bark and when they should be quiet.

It may seem counterintuitive, but teaching your dog to bark on command can actually help them learn to be quiet.

Speak up — Start by finding a trigger that makes your dog bark naturally. It could be a knock on the door, the doorbell ringing, or even someone saying “Speak.” When your dog barks, reward them with praise and a treat.

Quiet down — Once your dog understands the “Speak” command, introduce a cue for “Quiet,” such as “Enough” or a hand signal. Reward your dog with a treat when they stop barking after you give the cue.

Practice makes perfect — Practice the “Speak” and “Quiet” commands together until your dog can bark and then stop on command. This will help them understand when it’s appropriate to bark and when they should be quiet, giving you more control over their behavior.

🌱🐾 Pet owners, before letting your furry friend play outside, make sure you do a little pet-proofing!

👀 Lawns and gardens can be hazardous if they've been fertilized or sprayed with pesticides, or if garden additives have been used. Make sure to choose pet-safe products and keep curious pets from ingesting fertilizers or repellents.

🚫 Also, watch out for toxic plants like lilies, azaleas, sago palms, and tulips. Monitor your pets while outside or transplant these plants to a safer area.👌
