Our gorgeous newest tort, Moses Diamond.

When he came to us in the summer he had a soft shell and overgrown beak.

He's doing so well and lives for bathtime! 🥰

Welcome to my Cornish zoo house!

We continue to evolve here at Tort Towers, and as such, have changed our name.
I love sharing our animal life with you, through love and loss, hatching and happiness.

Our newest addition is 98 baby phidippus regius jumping spiders - you can find updates on them over at Spider Custard

And of course Heckin' Peckin, our last chick.

I love my big life.

We've been a bit quiet on social media at Tort Towers. Working 2 jobs while being a carer and ensuring all the animals get the attention they need has taken a bit of life balancing.

And today, finally we ditched the hutches. Lem and Long got a new space that suits them better.

We have a lot of animals, but we have a lot of love.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend 💚

Mallow W**d usually has light to dark pink flowers from June to October. Both leaves and flowers are safe for torts as part of a varied diet. And often found along verges and pavements.

It's edible for humans too, but doesn't have much flavour!

🌈R A I N B O W B R I D G E🌈

With so many animals at Tort Towers, death is something that we have had to come to terms with. Our beautiful Gladys Dumpling died at the beginning of this year and our vets were amazing in helping us to have her cremated.
Today we have had to say goodbye to Joe Snail, who has been buried with the torts so he'll never be alone.

It's never easy when they go, but when they come, they live their best lives. And that matters.

🤍

M Y H O M E

At tort towers, we have 8 torts, 4 dogs, 2 lovebirds, 6 spiders, 2 giant african land snails plus 5 babies, 2 stick insects, 2 guinea pigs, and 3 humans.

We don't have a massive house and we don't have more than we need. Often people are surprised when they visit as they expect a chaotic home, but instead find it to be calm and cozy.

My home isn't big, but it is my sanctuary.

Where there is love, there is room 🤍

This lovely boy is Moses.
He came into our care yesterday and is the friendliest little tort ever.
Sadly Moses likely has metabolic bone disease as a result of poor husbandry. He has a visit with the tort doc on Monday for some beak trimming and a little cuddle.

Please please do your research before getting a tortoise. Often people don't know they aren't providing the right care, and are then mortified when they realise their tort has irreversible damage that can both cause pain and shorten their life span.

Welcome to Tort Towers Moses, we love you so much already.

When we looked after guineas earlier this year, we missed them so much when they left that we had hoped we'd eventually have our own.
Then a few days ago, the universe, and a wonderful woman called Elizabeth brought us brothers who needed a new family.

They are settling well and so loved already 🥰🐽

I PROMISE that this will be the only spider post on this page, as I know it's really very hard for those with arachbophobia to see.

These are another part of Tort Towers that is really important to me. We currently have 6 little spideys. I am always open to people coming to meet them, especially if you are afraid and want to get better at handling them. Or if you want your child(ren) to not develop the same fear.

They are wonderful little creatures 🕷

🐢 G U E S T S and F O S T E R I N G 🐢

We currently have a guest 'bedroom' at Tort Towers complete with uva+b heat lamp.

If ever you are going away, or in need then we are here to help.

While your tort is with us, they will be bathed regularly and fed a natural diet. They'll be our guest of honour.

We never ask for payment, but if you are in a position to donate some tort edible bedding or substrate then this is always so helpful.

It's always such a pleasure to have new tort friends with us, and we understand that it isn't always a planned stay away from home. So we are always happy to foster whenever needed 💚

(We also have enclosed outdoor space for bigger torts)

☀️WHEN IS HOT TOO HOT FOR TORTS?☀️

We know that tortoises love warmth, however as reptiles, they are unable to generate their own body heat. This means that in the wild they rely on the sun to soak up uva and uvb that is essential for their growth and development.

The preferred environmental temperature for a tort is 30°C. If your tort overheats, it can become lethargic and lose appetite, leading to heatstroke.

With the even warmer weather approaching, you can do the following to help your tort stay at a good temperature...

☀️ If outside, it is essential that your tort has access to shaded areas at all times.

☀️ Bathing your tort more regularly will help reduce the risk of dehydration.

It's not all torts..sometimes it's snails. These little things grow so fast, last week I could see their heartbeats and today their pretty markings. Some of these darlings are looking to be adopted. Giant african land snails are super easy to care for but I'm happy to make a care sheet with all the info you need to go with them.

I'm happy to give any info about these guys and how to care for them before you make any decisions too, if that's helpful.

🐢 W E I G H T and W E L L N E S S 🐢

⚖️WEIGHT⚖️

🐢 Keeping regular (I do this monthly) weight recordings can be really useful in knowing whether to increase or reduce your tort's food amounts.

🐢 In great tort style, they need to gain weight slowly.

🐢 I use a digital scale with a tub, but another way to do this (for bigger torts) is to place a plant pot upside down on the scale and pop your tort on top.

🐢 Note that tort's weight can fluctuate and during winter months, will lose weight. Please see my hibernation post for more info.

🤗 WELLNESS CHECK 🤗

It's important to check your tort over to ensure they are in good condition. Here is a list of thi gs to consider...

🐢 Is your tort bright and alert?
🐢 Are their eyes clear?
🐢 Are their nostrils dry?
🐢 Is their shell free from damage?
🐢 Are their nails and beak overgrown?
🐢 Are they passing faeces, urine, urates regularly and do they look like toothpaste?

If you are worried about your tortoises weight or wellness then contact your local vet who will be able to advise.
For local people, I use Mounts Bay Veterinary Centre. They will also be able to give you the name and contact of a more specialist tort vet if needed.

Interior design yet to be explored but it's up and complete! We have a very talented builder in our family, we are so lucky and grateful for her. And so are the torts!

If you find a tortoise, it more than likely has a human who is missing him/her.

So what should you do?

🤕 C H E C K F O R I N J U R Y 🤕
If the tort has an obvious injury then please call any local vet centre who will transfer the call if it is out of hours.

💧 W A T E R 💧
As you don't know how long the tort has been roaming, he could be super dehydrated. Pop him in a tub with enough luke warm water to cover the bottom rim or 'skirt' of his shell for about 15 minutes. He might p**p and rid his urates (a white substance). This is good.

🌱 F O O D 🌱
You can give the tort something to eat but steer clear of veg and fruit. Dandelion leaves and flowers are easily available. Or if you don't have a garden then some rocket or romaine lettuce is good. Tortoises can't eat all types of lettuce so make sure you don't reach for the common iceberg if you have it.

☀️T E M P E R A T U R E ☀️
Torts like to be warm and need UVA and UVB. If it's a sunny day then keeping him in a secure garden is great. Alternatively, in an open box.

🏥V E T S 🏥
Tortoises are often microchipped. Ring a local vet center and ask them to scan their back legs to check. If not, please call all local vets and let them know you have a found tortoise. They will take it in if you are unable to care for it until the owner is found.

💻S O C I A L M E D I A💻
Lost and found posts on Facebook get a lot of attention. If you choose to post on Facebook then please be aware that some people will not be well intentioned and claim the tortoise as their own.

Tortoises should be microchipped. Info re microchipping and legislation here...

Tortoises LOVE flowers! And many of them are safe to feed, such as rose and sunflower...

BUT...

Shop bought flowers are usually sprayed with pesticides which can be harmful to your tort.

So stick to your garden blooms, or you can buy dried flower mixes online from places such as https://www.allthingstortoise.com/

Signs of poisoning in torts can vary but can include respiratory distress, excess salivation, vomiting, tremors, convulsions or paralysis. If you think your tort has been poisoned, it is important that you seek vet help immediately as poisoning can result in death.

🌱WEED OF THE WEEK! 🌱

Did you know that stinging nettles (Urtica Dioica) are safe for tortoises?! (Although not many like them 🤣)

They MUST first be blanched to prevent any stinging tongues. You can do this by soaking them for a few minutes in boiling water, drain and allow to cool.

🌱They can also be tossed into a blender along with some olive oil, pinenuts and a few basil springs for a delicious pesto for the humans!🌱

22/06/2022

🍏F R U I T🍉

Tortoises LOVE fruit, but it is very high in sugar so should only be given as an occasional treat (it should make up no more than 10 percent of a tort's diet).

😫Sugar and starch can disrupt a tort's digestion by changing the type of bacteria that live in their hindgut.

🍓Tortoises can eat fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, bananas and mangos.

🍊Avoid citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons.

🥑 Avocados should NEVER be given as they are toxic for torts.

⬇️Our lovely Wilbur enjoyed a cube of frozen mango today ☀️

20/06/2022

Daily reminder that Turtles are not “inside” their shells. They *are* their shells.

A tortoise/turtle shell contains nerves that connect to its central nervous system. So they can feel pain and pleasure when their shells are touched, stroked, knocked, dropped, or injured.

Contrary to what many people believe the shell is an inseparable part of their anatomy, forming part of its skeletal structure. The ribs and spine are fused inside the shell and contain nerves connected to the nervous system.

Take away - be gentle with your tortoise and give their shell a stroke, they will probably enjoy it 🐢

🌱W**d of the Week!🌱

Ribwort plantain aka narrowleaf plantain, English plantain, ribleaf, lamb's tongue, and buckhorn.

Safe for all breeds of tortoises to eat.

Also can be used as a antihistamine, ribwort plantain is very effective at dealing with nettle stings!

🌿🐢TOP TIP🐢🌿

(Sharing again now the days are warmer and the weeds are flourishing!)

🌿KEEP FORAGED WEEDS FRESH FOR LONGER🌿

I forage food often for my torts because it's free, it's fun, and gives them a natural and varied diet.

🐢Spray a few pieces of kitchen towel so it's damp, but not dripping.

🐢Pop in a food bag and let all the air out.

🐢Seal it and pop it in the fridge.
