Primarily Parrots

It’s a long drive from Louisiana to Wichita where we are headed for our next educational programs. Tiki and Dazzle were excited to take a break and get out and stretch those wings! Tiki is a red-fronted macaw and Dazzle is a blue-throated macaw. Both of these species are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED with only around 800 red fronts and ~400 blue-throats left in the wild. These girls often accompany us during our educational programs and are even trained for outside free flight as you see here.

Hendrix is our beautiful (albeit clumsy 😆) boy you may also see and learn about at some of our programs! He is a 12 week old military macaw and is JUST learning to fly. Watch for future videos of his first OUTDOOR flight with us! (After extensive training of course 😃)

Blu is our 28 yr old Hyacinth macaw who occasionally attends our educational programs. Hyacinth macaws are the largest (by length) flying parrot; though the flightless, nocturnal kakapo outweighs them. (*There are some Buffon macaws that are comparable in size to some hyacinths as well) Blu doesn’t have a huge vocabulary, but his favorite things to say are “high five,” “peekaboo,” and “BLAHHHH” 😂😂😜😜. Hyacinths are known as the “gentle giants” in the bird world; but don’t let that name deceive you. They have a VERY powerful bite force that can open macadamia nuts up with ease and that ginormous beak of theirs can be quite intimidating if you are not comfortable and familiar with large parrots (or even if you are). Blu can be a total love bug, but he also does latch on to his favorite people and will “let you know” when he does NOT want to be taken away from them. Since I haven’t posted “Ida”-military macaw in a while… Here she is with my daughter Avery. We’ve been working with her indoors more recently- trying to get her over some nervous behavioral issues she’s developed lately. Some days she seems to be doing amazing and sometimes she seems to regress a little. She is doing great tonight. It’s been raining every single day the past week but we’ve still managed to fly daily during the breaks of rain so Gremlin can continue to gain skill and confidence in his flying. He has finally started doing jinking maneuvers and really seems to be having a great time now. He has proven his reliability at this location so we will fly at another similar level location soon. Gremlin is an 8 month old red fronted macaw who came here clipped. We imped him so he could start his free flight journey sooner rather than wait until his clipped feathers molted out which can take up to a year.
