Apart from sniff walks and puzzle feeders, trick or basic training is another form of mental and physical exercise I provide as a pet sitter. It’s also one of the ways I try to connect with my furry clients. As their sitter, it’s imperative for me to have a positive and trusting relationship with them. I love to see them working with me because they LIKE or ENJOY it, not because they’re forced or just to avoid unpleasant consequences. It’s the reason why I choose force free.
Here’s Bella doing some loose leash walking training with me. Apparently, she’s still learning how to walk on a leash. She’s faster and stronger than me so pulling on the leash is inevitable (pulling is never done on purpose). The first time I tried walking her, I had to run to avoid being dragged and eventually tumble. Ran out of breath in just about 15 minutes. She did a good job making me run like that though. 😅
A longer leash is ideal and recommended but not fitting for our situation at least for now. She easily gets excited and will run if she wants to get to something or someone. If that happens, you’ll find my face on the ground. Literally. 😅
In this video, I’m just using the standard length of the leash. She came with a chest harness. I’m not comfortable with it but at least it’s not choking her.
I specifically chose this area because it’s not too distracting for her. This is just our second session and I want to make learning easy and fun for her. Imagine if we do this at the busy park without knowing the basics. It’s like studying the Korean language for me, familiarizing Hangul first made learning a bit easier and lot less frustrating.
What I’m doing is just reinforcing her for walking near me. No jerking, no choking, no pinching, no zapping, for forcing, no dragging, no popping, no pulling, no shouting. Totally unnecessary anyway. I use treats that she likes (not crazy about because tendency is she’ll never stop begging). First, I feed her tr
