IN THE EYE OF JOAQUIN PHOENIX
In his exclusive interview with IFAW he tells us about his commitment and his fight for the animal cause. Joaquin Phoenix appears in a new campaign declaring "We are all animals". Vegan since the age of 3, it's an everyday commitment for him. "At that age, my brother, sisters and I saw fish being killed in a very violent and aggressive way. And it was just absolutely obvious that we didn't want to participate in that, that we didn't want to support that. I don't want to cause pain to another empathetic living being."
On 9 September 2019, on the sidelines of the presentation of the film "Joker" at the Toronto Film Festival, Joaquin Phoenix joined a pro-vegan demonstration in the city's underground at the invitation of the association Be Fair Be Vegan. A few months earlier, on 2 June 2019, he led a demonstration for the 9th National Animal Rights Day in Hollywood.
Finally, for more than 10 years, Joaquin Phoenix has regularly taken part in the campaigns of the association Peta against the mistreatment of animals: animal fur, circus, zoo, intensive breeding. 🐾🐾
Joaquin Phoenix will not be wearing wool this winter. He declares "cruelty is not my style. Don't put wool in your wardrobe. "The actor appears alongside rescued sheep and wears a vegan costume by Brave GentleMan.
Phoenix is one of a long list of celebrities including Eva Mendes, Alicia Silverstone, Mark Ronson, Pamela Anderson, Iggy Pop and many others who are affiliated with promoting more ethical clothing choices.

Melting of the ice floe: Antarctica is one of the regions most severely and rapidly affected by global warming. Among whales, penguins, starfish and jellyfish, some species are in danger of extinction...

Take the polar bear, for example. He is very sensitive to the melting of the ice, because the ice pack is his place of life, and he depends on it: food, movement, reproduction. The increase in temperature is twice as intense in the Arctic regions as in the rest of the world. Adapted to cold climates, the fauna and flora of the North Pole are therefore the first to be affected by the sudden modification of their habitat. Indeed, the melting of the ice pack, whose surface area could reach less than 520,000 km2 by 2050, compared with 7.5 million square kilometres in the 1980s.

Species such as: polar bear, caribou, narwhal, bowhead whale, white whale, walrus, snow fox and many others ....

Fire in Australia's forests: One of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history. Unprecedented forest fires devastated Australia in 2019 and 2020. These events caused the death or migration of nearly three billion animals. Today it is estimated that 2.46 billion reptiles, 180 million birds, 143 million mammals and 51 million amphibians have been affected by the fires of 2019-2020.
The prospects for those who have escaped the flames are probably not terrible due to a lack of food, shelter and protection from predators. Particularly virulent fires ...
The plight of koalas had particularly stirred public opinion, with a government survey recently citing 100 other endemic endangered plants and animal species that lost more than half their habitat to the flames.

Fire in the Amazon: The ecological disaster in South America could change the habitats of hundreds of species. Not to mention the animals that, too slow to escape the flames, perished in the fires. Millions of animals perished in the fires that ravaged the Amazon. 4 million hectares went up in smoke and 2.3 million animals died in the Bolivian part of the Amazon rainforest.

The Amazon is home to one out of every 10 known species on Earth, including more than 400 kinds of mammals🐘, 300 reptiles🦎, 400 amphibians and 3,000 species of freshwater fish🐟.
Some animals seem to be more advantaged than others in this type of situation. For example, jaguars and pumas, as well as most birds thanks to their mobility to escape from the flames. On the other hand, slower animals, such as sloth or anteaters, as well as smaller species such as frogs and lizards, were not fast enough to leave the area quickly. In addition, the fires have severely degraded the ecosystem in the affected areas, and for some species, migration will probably be necessary for their survival.

IN THE EYE OF JOAQUIN PHOENIX

In his exclusive interview with IFAW he tells us about his commitment and his fight for the animal cause. Joaquin Phoenix appears in a new campaign declaring "We are all animals". Abandonment on the public highway or in nature is classified as an act of cruelty and punishable by a fine of €30,000 and 2 years imprisonment. However, in France nearly 100,000 dogs and cats are abandoned every year, with a peak during the summer. The IFAW collects nearly 42,000 animals per year, including about 10,000 in the summer. The association fights daily against the scourge of abandonment.

THE CAUSES OF ANIMAL ABANDONMENT 🐈🐕

There are many reasons for the abandonment of animals: moving, separation, financial reasons.... Leaving on vacation is also a recurring cause of abandonment, especially in the summer.
Every year, nearly 40,000 dogs and cats are abandoned on their way to their vacations. However, many solutions are now being proposed to have your companion looked after during his vacations: kennels, having a friend look after him or even having someone look after him at home...

ONE OF THE IFAWS FLAGSHIP MISSIONS: HELPING ABANDONED ANIMALS

Every day, the IFAW takes in animals in distress, abandoned or lost in its 63 shelters and IFAW Homes. They are taken care of by the teams and then identified, sterilized, vaccinated, cared for, educated and socialized before being offered for adoption.
In order to prevent the abandonment of puppies and kittens, often the result of a sterilization defect, the IFAW conducts awareness campaigns on sterilization, with municipalities and individuals. Indeed, an unneutered animal is an animal that can sire a large number of offspring who will find themselves in difficult living conditions.

A couple of cats, for example, can have 20,000 descendants in 4 years. To fight against this proliferation, the IFAW carries out campaigns of sterilization of free cats in agreement with the town halls. Sterilization is the best way to limit ill-treatment, animal misery and abandonment.

ABANDONING YOUR ANIMAL, RULES TO BE RESPECTED ❌

Sometimes, some owners find themselves forced to abandon their pets. It is then essential to abandon it to a shelter, which will take care of the animal in the best conditions and find a family for it.
The first step is to look for the nearest shelter: ifaw.shelter.org.

Nearly two million animal and plant species have been identified to date and millions more have yet to be discovered. However, more than one species out of three is now threatened with extinction.

In one century, nearly 97% of tigers and their habitat have disappeared. Only 3,890 individuals live in their natural environment today, compared to 100,000 a hundred years ago.
The tiger is the largest feline, one of the most emblematic, but also one of the most threatened.

THREATS TO THE TIGER 🐅🐅
Over the last century, the world population of wild tigers has declined dramatically from over 100,000 to less than 4,000. The tiger suffers from many threats:
- Reduction or destruction of its habitat: agriculture, timber trade and road construction force tigers to live in small, isolated areas.
- Poaching and illegal trade: Tiger hunting continues to decrease its population. The fur, claws and teeth and even its meat are considered trophies.
- Availability of prey: Poachers also hunt the prey of tigers, thus slimming their food supply.

IFAW MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Our mission aims in particular to :
- Stop poaching: by supporting anti-poaching patrols and removing the many traps installed.
- Carry out scientific studies: in particular by placing surveillance cameras that are used to study the territories and way of life of tigers.
- Supporting local communities: IFAW implements solutions so that people can live a safe and decent life.
- Reintroduce tigers to critical areas: IFAW works to bring wild tigers back to protected areas.

The tiger situation is critical, but IFAW's efforts are beginning to bear fruit. Since 2010, the global tiger population has increased by nearly 20%!
