We're proud to introduce "Stories from the Soil" Chef Claire Bastarache. Hailing from Massachusetts, Chef Claire grew up in a family where the kitchen was the heart of the home. Influenced by her chef mother and visits with her Canadian relatives—fishermen and lobstermen by trade— she developed a deep connection to her French Basque roots. Family gatherings often celebrated the harvest of their own garden and the day’s fresh-caught seafood, nurturing her passion for vibrant, homegrown flavors. Her passion for fine dining took hold as a teenager through transformative work experiences along the East Coast’s culinary scene. After several years working as a private chef in San Diego, Chef Claire took a brief hiatus only to rediscover her lifelong love for baking and return to the industry after the pandemic. ⁠

In her dual role as Creative Culinary Consultant and Pastry Chef at Fox Point Farms, Bastarache is building a bakery program that celebrates seasonal, farm-grown ingredients— perfectly aligned with her longstanding involvement in Encinitas-based nonprofit Sea + Soil, a leader in regenerative agriculture. Chef Claire’s artful blend of creativity and deep respect for the land shines through housemade breads and pastries at Harvest Market, as well as the zero-waste dessert program at Haven Farm + Table and Hatch Gathering’s on-site catering services. Through her work at Fox Point Farms, Chef Claire hopes to inspire the community to explore bold, uncharted flavors in the world of sweets.⁠

We're proud to highlight "Stories from the Soil" Chef Kelston Moore, Chef de Cuisine at Haven Farm + Table.⁠

A rising star and advocate for Black voices in hospitality, Chef Kelston Moore brings heart and soul into every dish he creates. Born and raised in Barbados, Moore’s culinary roots trace back to his father, whose legendary barbecue was celebrated across the island. Determined to create his own path, Kelston joined the U.S. Navy, where he spent his active-duty years cooking for thousands of soldiers on an aircraft carrier—an experience he considers a highlight of his life.⁠

After his Navy service, Kelston apprenticed under Chef Geoff Cole of Admirals Experience Inc., an opportunity that allowed him to explore the world, serving meals to troops and developing a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and cuisines.⁠

After his military career, Kelston faced profound personal challenges, battling depression and PTSD. Emerging from this difficult time with a renewed purpose, he now uses his platform to support fellow veterans navigating similar struggles.⁠

In 2018, Kelston launched The Date Night Chef, offering curated dining experiences in San Antonio. Relocating to San Diego in 2020, he co-founded Bad Boyz of Culinary, a nonprofit spotlighting African American culinary talent through mentorship, events, and scholarships. Named runner-up for Best Chef by San Diego Magazine in 2023, he continued to gain acclaim with an appearance on Food Network’s Chopped and a prestigious role as Sous Chef at The St. Regis Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah.⁠

Now back in San Diego and leading Haven Farm + Table, Chef Kelston collaborates closely with the farm team at Fox Point Farms, crafting hyper-fresh, seasonal dishes. Drawing from his Caribbean heritage, he infuses vibrant island flavors and indigenous techniques, creating a dining experience that is deeply local and globally inspired.⁠

We are excited to introduce "Stories from the Soil" guest chef David K. Lay Jr., a culinary artist celebrated for his bold and innovative vegan cuisine. Beginning his career as a dishwasher in 2014, he has risen to the role of Chef De Cuisine at Kettner Exchange in San Diego’s Little Italy—a Michelin Bib Gourmand-winning restaurant. Along the way, he honed his craft under esteemed chefs like Brian Redzikowski, Anthony Wells, and Danilo Tangalin.⁠

Chef David's journey includes significant stints at other prestigious establishments, such as Juniper & Ivy, where he contributed while the restaurant received Michelin Guide recognition. His culinary focus is rooted in vegan cuisine, with a deep passion for flavors from the African diaspora. David believes in achieving a “perfection of vision,” treating food as an art form that tells stories and evokes memories. He crafts dishes that are clean, sustainable, and flavorful, while blurring the lines between simplicity and gastronomy.⁠

One of David’s favorite quotes by Musashi captures his approach to cooking and life: “There is nothing outside of yourself that can ever enable you to get better, stronger, richer, quicker, or smarter. Everything is within. Everything exists. Seek nothing outside of yourself.” This philosophy drives his relentless work ethic and commitment to excellence, always pushing himself harder to reach his culinary goals.⁠

David’s love for cooking began in his youth, preparing meals for his brothers after school and helping his mother with dinner. His first job in high school was at his neighbor’s restaurant, “I Love Bagels,” in Oceanside, California, where he did food prep and dishwashing. Before dedicating himself fully to the culinary arts, he pursued a career in music, opening a recording studio and publishing company. This lifelong passion for music and poetry continues to influence his culinary creations, blending the rhythm of music with the artistry of cooking.⁠

We’re excited to continue offering a beautiful, fun, and relaxing space for all our visitors, so we want to inform you about a new change: Starting tomorrow, we’ll be introducing a small $5 parking fee from 12PM-Close on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This will help us manage parking demand, especially during our busiest times. Our goal is to reduce congestion and create a more enjoyable visit for everyone!⁠

For your convenience:⁠
-We will offer several free 20-minute parking spaces for those stopping by to grocery shop.⁠
-Haven guests, paid event attendees, and wellness class participants will always enjoy free parking during their visit.⁠

**Please consider using ECO-FRIENDLY TRANSPORTATION methods. Guests who walk, bike, carpool, or take public transportation will receive 10% off their purchase at Harvest Market.⁠
