My heart and soul of all the training I do. These fearful dogs. It means everything to me to see them learn to trust me and the other dogs. They just don’t live long enough to waste a single minute getting better.
Sadie Bo was dumped in the woods at 6 months old. Her family has no idea what happened to her prior, but my guess is zero exposure to new things or other dogs. So many people assume dogs like this have been physically abused. Good chance that this is often not the case. As I say time and time again, lack of socialization is a greater form of abuse than physical abuse. Dogs struggle more when they don’t trust anyone or anything simply because they have not been around a ton of environmentals, especially dogs. It’s crazy what a huge factor that is in the dog world. But let’s think about it. The first year of a dogs life is like the first 10
Years of a child. Imagine a child spent the first 10 years of his life in hiding? It would affect him in a huge way.
Sadie Bo began to show teeth, growl, and snap when her family would come across other dogs. They knew it was a huge problem and that as much as they tried, it wasn’t getting better, in fact, it was quickly getting worse.
So although it looks like torture in the beginning, every single move we made had a purpose. I surrounded Sadie Bo with everything new. All new obstacles, and the biggest obstacle being multiple dogs. I advocated for her 💯 meaning not letting dogs be in her face for more than 3 seconds and keeping her on a leash the whole time. I pushed her and and pushed her so she can see that she’s capable of so much more. I also gave her an hour nap in her crate away from all the dogs so she can soak it in, decompress, and start after her brain had a chance to relax. Then I took her out for the small dog social where she would be even less intimidated.
It’s all strategized.

If you have a puppy, socialize it as much as you possible can. You can safely socialize young puppies. Waiting till they have all their vaccines is often too late for some of these dogs. Choose dogs that are healthy, vaccinated, and well cared for to have your new puppy around.
There are not enough homes for “only dogs”. Shelters are packed with dogs that can’t live with dogs or even all past other dogs without losing their minds. This can all be avoided.

8 month old Sadie started to show aggression to other dogs due to lack of exposure as a younger pup.
