Here’s the truth: while the puppy you’re purchasing might not seem sick, many of them are riddled with genetic diseases that may not show up until later—if you’re lucky. Even though the pet store offers a health certificate from a vet, it’s nothing special; it’s simply required for any puppy sold commercially across state lines.

Documents obtained by Bailing Out Benji show that puppies often leave breeding facilities with documented health issues. The most common ones we’ve seen on travel documents include hernias (inguinal and umbilical), upper respiratory infections, luxating patellas, cryptorchidism, open fontanelles, and heart murmurs.

If the pet store is offering a one-year health guarantee, read it very carefully! These guarantees are designed to protect the store’s interests more than yours and can be full of exclusions and loopholes. Sadly, if your puppy gets sick, most stores require you to return the puppy in order to get a refund or a new dog.
