No dog needs s heavier hand BUT…
Some dogs need a teacher with a more advanced skill set and all dogs need patience.
An escalation in force, pressure, etc means the human hit the end of their skill set and rather than check themselves, they punish the dog.
What I want to say is: I’m sorry you ran out of skills and felt the need to punish your dog.
I am sorry for all of the dogs in the world that have to pay a hefty price when it was never their fault.
Dogs are born blameless and remain blameless.
It’s never about the dog. It is always about the humans.

SQUIRRELS!! Squirrels, bunnies, birds, deer…
So how do we deal with so many variables and so much stimuli in the Wild?
My preferred method will not come as a surprise to those that have been following me. I like to use the stimulus AS THE CUE to offer an alternative behavior. My go to is a quick check in (just as you’ve seen me do with reactivity and my dog with bunnies).
Many of you may feel like this is an impossible feat BUT this team has not ever done a private lesson with me and they are across the country. Enzo is also on a long line in this video!!
They have only been using the content from the Puppies in the Wild course.
NOT ONLY THAT, but this team has conquered reactivity to golf carts and other dogs and so much more.
If nothing else, remember that there is always help out there. You’re not alone.
Huge shoutout to @that.golden.boy.enzo for all of their amazing and hard work. Nothing makes me happier than seeing dogs like this out there living their best lives in the Wild. Huge shout out to @chloeandaugiebythesea for connecting Enzo and his mama to me 💕💕💕

Augie Doggy update!
L “aka Augie’s future forever tiny human” was scared of Augie.
First, we paired L’s favorite things with Augie. We created a comfy, safe, stuctured, and controlled environment for our meet and greets.
From there we started teaching L how to give soft touches and to toss cookies to Augie and he would get rewards each time he said “Augie”, gave soft pets, or tossed a cookie to Augie.
Then I wanted proximity between L and Augie and then I wanted proximity AND duration. Today I brought long carrots for L to give Augie so he could give him something directly AND have some distance plus it’s easy for L to hold.
Today we had a major breakthrough and L reached out and touched Augie’s head!! Usually, he can only touch his tail or back while I reward Augie to reinforce keeping his head directed towards me to make the interaction less intense for L.
My next step is to give L more control by teaching L a cue for Augie to move so it’s predictable. We have a “down” cue, but getting up and moving is more stressful for L so I want to give L control by being able to say when it happens. That will expedite the desensitization process. I do the same thing for dogs 💕
I’m starting to demonstrate this with “spin”. So we say it, Augie does it, then L does it. We want to show him that Augie moving doesn’t have to be stressful or dangerous or scary.
Today was soooooo amazing and I can’t wait to continue integrating sweet Augie Doggy into his future family.

⭐️MULTI-DOG MANAGEMENT AND EVERYDAY OPPORTUNITIES FOR “ADDITIONS”. ⭐️
I like to feed dogs at stations when working with multiples.
They know as soon as I get the
food where to go and wait. This also prevents any resource guarding between the doggos.
They each have their own @outwardhound slow feeder for this meal and I’m adding some dehydrated toppers as I approach.
ADDITIONS=
1) approach your dog and stay at a distance in which your dog is not showing any signs of discomfort
2) add something of higher value
3) walk away
That’s it.
Notice that Augie and Sooner both look up at me as I approach in anticipation of me adding something yummy. This is INCOMPATIBLE with resource guarding (aka food aggression).
If I wanted to, I could shape the dog to move away from the bowl as well.
We don’t have any issues with this but if you’re not doing daily additions, the best time to start is NOW ✨The best kind of training is the kind that’s positive and easily fits into your everyday life. Learning is a process-not an event. Finding more ways to reward your dog for behavior that you prefer sets everyone up for lasting success.
Happy training y’all 💕

⭐️SOCIALIZATION⭐️
Exposure without intention is NOT socialization.
I knew when the trash was coming AND it was raining so we have multiple socialization opportunities happening here between the sound, moving object, and rain.
Notice that I’m using engage-disengage here and rewarding away. I’m also rewarding for anything else that I like so that this puppy has an abundance of behaviors that can be rewarded. I’m not trying to move too much, I’m not requiring ANYTHING, and this is not about leash skills but I AM in fact keeping a loose leash.
There is soooo much learning happening here and in under a minute.
Slow is fast and these short sessions leave a lasting impact on your puppy.
EVEN IF you have an older puppy or an older dog, these short and sweet sessions are key.

⭐️REACTIVITY⭐️
Resolving reactivity IS possible and while the goal may seem simplistic, there are a lot of layers to resolving it and it’s not linear AT ALL. Why? Because we are working with emotions and those are always changing.
One issue with reactivity is that the response will often depend on the intensity of the trigger and that is a reflection of speed, size, quantity, direction, distance, and so much more.
The dogs are on long lines here. They’ve been getting plenty of enrichment and their needs have been consistently met so I’m being pretty hands off here. Why? Based on the body language of my dogs and the situation and recent reinforcement history, I made an educated assessment of the situation and went from there. There are times when I take distance and immediately begin a much more involved approach but I didn’t see the need here.
So I made sure to take distance, to keep the lines loose, to use verbal markers, I monitored my own body language, and then I observed the interaction. I was prepared to cue an incompatible behavior if I needed to.
You can see the moment Sooner registers the dog. His head pops up, his body stiffens, his head orients directly to the dog and I love that he immediately sniffs and then runs to mark the tree. Why? That’s his way of navigating the emotional response to the dog. This was About as neutral as it gets for Sooner but I thought it was lovely. He saw the dog and went about his life.
It’s normal for dogs to react to dogs and other stimuli. It’s also normal for dogs to have an OVER-reaction to stimuli.
What’s important is how we handle it and how we set them up for success with each interaction.
In a city environment, I’ll have less space so my approach will be far more proactive and involved BUT the point is that EVEN IN a city, your dog NEEDS to experience interactions such as this. They NEED to be able to be set up for success so that they CAN have the space (literally and figurat
Cues are interesting. I don’t say “commands” because that implies force and “demanding” something but a “cue” is more of an “ask”. I think of training as a conversation. It’s less about obedience and more about using behavior as feedback. Well mannered dogs are lovely but I don’t need a robot or a foot soldier.
When I ask for a “wait”, I am asking for a brief hold until they hear a release cue. I use this behavior with doors, garages, street crossings, getting in and out of a car, and so much more.
I love this for car safety and I teach this to every doggo because it’s never great when you open a door and a doggo immediately jumps out. Typically, I just start by opening the door and giving a cookie and then I build duration. I usually teach this using the default/foundation behaviors that I teach first and then I start using it at thresholds so the behavior tends to generalize quickly. No need for “corrections” or pain or to be annoyed by a beep or a vibration. Just train the behavior that you’d like and reinforce it :)
It makes outings like this with both dogs safe and calm even with another doggo passing by us. Happy training y’all 💕

⭐️BUT MY DOG ISN’T FOOD MOTIVATED⭐️
All living creatures need food. When dogs aren’t taking food, there is something ELSE going on and we need to use that as feedback.
In THIS instance, Sooner is hot and tired and while he enthusiastically came running when I called him, he didn’t take the reward. This also shows his reinforcement history at work because he didn’t want food but coming when called was still so super rewarding because of the millions (literally) of times that he’s come to me when I’ve called and received some kind of reinforcement.
So rather than continuing to work, I take this as feedback and we head home. What do I do to make sure everyone is successful knowing Sooner is fatigued? I keep an extra eye out for potential triggers and I shorten the long lines. I’m aware that given his level of fatigue that he might not be capable of making his best life decisions so I make adjustments to make sure he’s successful.
If your dog isn’t taking food but takes food in other situations, examine what’s happening. Observe your dog. Can you see visible signs of stress? Is your dog hot? Tired? Have you just finished a big training session and they are suddenly not taking food? Have you moved locations? Are you closer to a trigger? Are they feeling ok? Many fearful dogs will stop taking food when they are too close to a trigger but will take food when you take distance. Awesome. Now you know the threshold.
If your dog takes food inside and then doesn’t the moment you step outside, we need to focus on changing the emotional response to being outside and metaphorically turn down the volume or the heat (if you will).
If your dog generally just doesn’t take food, we need to look at any underlying medical or emotional issues like anxiety.
Do we always use food? No. I use layers and layers of reinforcement including praise, play, petting, toys, and so much more but food is easy, powerful, fast and is a primary reinforcer for dog
When working with reactivity, distance is key.
I was driving with the dogs and saw what looked to be a lovely place for a sniffy walk so I pulled over and grabbed the long lines and off we went. Little did I know that it would open up to this amazing clearing that had a dog park!!!!!!
Will my dogs be playing there? No. It’s not that much bigger than my yard to be honest and they have plenty of appropriate play mates that they love so I just don’t risk playing with unknown dogs (especially with Augie the #sdit).
BUT…this is A PERFECT spot to work on reactivity!!!!! The only issue will be the potential for off Leash dogs but in experience, people tend to keep their dogs on leash when around an off leash dog park because of the clear delineation. The risk is always there but look at how much distance we can safely work with!!! And notice that this is insulated from other potential triggers as well.
This would also be a lovely place for sniffy walks (as you can see) or recall work or working on tricks or advanced obedience or working with a small group.
Also, please enjoy Sooner living his best life rolling in the grass 🤣
When I find places like this, I try to make a note of it on one of my endless lists for working in the Wild and then categorized by behavioral goals/challenges.
I’m grateful to live in #texas and in the an area where we still have open spaces but for those that don’t, you don’t need THIS much space-just take what you can get.
Remember that just like we do with developing training plans, identify what you’re wanting in and looking for in a space, make it clear, make a list, and start figuring out how to find it. Don’t forget that @sniffspots is another great option and you can use our discount code cdt-10.
Happy training and let👏🏻 them 👏🏻sniff! 💕

⭐️REACTIVITY TIPS⭐️
Just as it is with separation anxiety, the beginning of the emotional response starts WAYYY before most humans even recognize. Separation distress does not just happen upon departure but rather, there are often numerous antecedents that PREDICT the departure and your dog’s stress typically begins with those and continues to amplify from there.
…..
Likewise, whether we are dealing with excitement or fear or frustration, reactivity is simply an “overreaction”. It’s your dog being a bit “extra” (if you will), and it often begins WELL before the actual stimulus. It’s the whole process.
……
For example, the issue is not just excitement when greeting guests but it’s the response to the doorbell, the knock, the sound of a car door, etc.
…..
For our leash reactive dogs, it can be the response to the leash which I’ve seen more times than I can count.
…..
So in this video, I’ve already changed the association to the leash as well as walking to the door and I’m utilizing what I call “extended holds” or pauses. You’ll notice that I’m not using any words but rather, I’ve simply built these holds and pauses into the process to help this sweet doggo learn to self-regulate a bit more BEFORE we even go out into the Wild.
……
Default behaviors are priceless.
……
So don’t get ahead of yourself when working with reactivity. The resolution is NOT just about the response to the stimulus or “object of interest” or “trigger”. The resolution is focusing on the bigger picture and setting your dog up for success by focusing on the core behaviors that your dog needs in order to be successful across the board.
…..
Happy training y’all 💕

⭐️3 SECOND CONSENT TEST⭐️
Not all dogs love being touched or petted so I love doing a 3-second consent test.
GUIDELINES
✅wait for your dog to approach and solicit touch
✅pet your dog for 3 seconds
✅pause.
✅allow them the choice to continue to engage or move away
✅wait for your dog to give you a signal that they would like the petting to continue before petting them again.
……
Some dogs absolutely love touch and it’s basically their love language and others are more sensitive to it. We can not assume that they enjoy it so this is a lovely way to teach them about choice.
……
Your dog should have Choice and control throughout the learning process. Happy training y’all

⭐️RESOLVING DEMAND BARKING AND COUNTER SURFING⭐️
……
As a dog trainer, my goal is to prevent the rehearsal of any behavior that will lead to any future challenges as best as I can.
……
What does this mean? It means that as soon as I see the beginning of a potential issue, I address it.
……
This puppy was barking rather incessantly with the sight of a food bowl and would climb the counters and even pace around the counters to check out if he could see a food bowl.
……
So I used a high rate of reinforcement to reinforce the behaviors that I would prefer being careful not to create any behavior chains and being mindful of any conditioned arousal and contingencies.
……
This may not seem like a lot but something as little as this can quickly become problematic. Food prep, picking up leashes, etc can have very strong emotional responses. Wouldn’t it be amazing if something like name recognition or a separation/departure cue had the same powerful and positive emotional response? THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT YOU CAN DO THAT!! Science y’all.
……
These are the types of mini lessons we add to our Puppies in the Wild course so that our students can also learn how to quickly prevent and resolve issues before they become solidified and problematic.
Happy training y’all.
#puppy #puppiesofinstagram #englishcreamgoldenretriever #puppylove #dogtraining #breakfast #hangry #problemsolving #doggo
⭐️TRAIN THE BEHAVIOR FIRST⭐️
One of the things we ask our Puppies in the Wild students to do is to imagine your adult dog and identify what would be the preferred outcome in the most common problematic situations such as: when guests come over, then the door opens, when you’re eating meals, when you see other dogs, etc.
……
So often we are reactionary and the mindset is “how can I stop my dog from doing (insert anything here)”. The mindset should be “how can I teach my dog an appropriate behavior in this situation”.
……
My focus with puppies and any dog is to build the behavior FIRST AND BEFORE trying to take it into the Wild. Everyone and almost everything is expected to build over time except our dogs. We know habits often take months to build and change yet so often we just expect our dogs to perform and “behave” without putting in the work.
……
You have a living sentient being that’s trying to speak a foreign language and live in a foreign land. They deserve the patience and the chance to understand how to be successful.
……
Here I taught our Magic Mat behavior which is NOT to be confused with a “place” or a “stay”. This is a progressive relaxation exercise but it built a foundation to help this puppy learn a more desirable response to the cleaning supplies. I’m sure it would have been more desirable for him
To eat the cleaning supplies but this was our compromise :)
……
If you’d like your dog ignore other dogs walking down the street, you have to build the behavior BEFORE you can expect it to be successful at maximum intensity. Think of it like a school or sports program. We don’t send kindergarteners to graduate school or T-ball players to the major leagues as they wouldn’t be successful.
…..
Your puppy doesn’t come preprogrammed with a vocabulary and learning sit, down, stay, leave it, come, shake, etc won’t resolve the most common everyday issues that you’re going to experience.
…..
Iden
Just because you’re using positive reinforcement, doesn’t mean it’s ok to just toss cookies at your dog. So often some of the biggest mistakes that I see include poor timing and actually inadvertently reinforcing a behavior that you’re trying to modify.
……
WHERE and WHEN you reward and with WHAT you reward and HOW you reward ALL MATTER!!!
……
So before you start to say that you tried positive reinforcement and it didn’t work, consider the possibility that IT DID WORK and you were likely doing it wrong.
……
There is so much more to consider when working with your learner. This applies to all learners as well-including your tiny humans, your pigs, your horses, your goats…⭐️impeccable timing, a strong foundation of learning theory, and problem solving skills are all skills that are often overlooked. The best athletes have the best footwork. The devil is in the details which is why we cover this extensively in our Puppies in the Wild course. Puppy raising takes a village y’all. ⭐️WHY I NEVER ASK FOR A SIT WITH REACTIVE DOGS ⭐️ The same applies to any sort of correction which I wouldn’t ever do anyways since in the dog training world, the word “correction” doesn’t actually teach the dog what you would prefer which is entirely my focus. That conversation is for another day but to change your dog’s reaction to a stimulus we can 1. Teach an operant behavior at a low level and by rewarding it consistently we also condition a new emotional response 2. Pair the stimulus with something amazing to create an emotional response (and inevitably we actually do end up with some operant behavior due to antecedent arrangement) but the one thing that WILL NOT WORK is asking for a sit, a sit stay, consistently flooding your dog, applying any sort of punishment or pressure (this includes leash corrections, leash pops, any correction on the leash by any other name), vibrations, spray bottles, noises, penny cans…the list of how people continue to punish their dogs is insanely endless and yet, it never actually resolves anything. Pavlov and Skinner paved the way years ago. Let’s make them proud by focusing on changing the emotional response to a stimulus rather than just trying to “fix” a behavior. By changing the emotional response, you WILL modify the behavior for the better. When you change the way you look at things…the things you look at start to change. Shift your lens to what you can do better for your dog and your dog will thank you for it. Take a step back, give some relief, and reassess. If you don’t believe me, try it in your own life first and then give it a go with your dog. Happy training y’all 💕 #dogtraining #behavior #dogsofinstagram #puppytraining #dogtrainer #fearfree #forcefree #trainwithoutpain #dogtrainingtips #reactivity #knowbetterdobetter
FIRST TIME IN A CRATE: it’s not enough to feed your dog in the Crate. It’s just not. Repetition is key. I focus on the dog choosing to go into the crate without closing the door AT LEAST 40x before I even introduce that the door might close. When the door closes, it starts by moving ever so slightly so I can evaluate if there’s any sensitivity to the sound or movement. It’s crucial to move slow with baby puppies. Repetition without anything potentially negative is KEY. Does this mean that we don’t condition separation? Nope. We focus a ton on creating INTENTIONAL separation. I swear I was waving signs everywhere to make sure we are teaching our covid puppies healthy separation. This is totally possible even if you never ever get in your car or leave your property. Being safely alone is an imperative skill. So how do we crate train without flooding and while also creating intentional separation? We do so using a holistic approach and it’s why the Puppies in the Wild course is so successful. You can see a puppy’a whole first day and how I shape everything to make a lasting impression and set the puppy up for both short-term and long-term success. Repetition is key. Slow is fast. Happy training y’all. #puppy #puppytraining #cratetraining #fearfree #slowisfast #englishcreamgoldenretriever #retrieversofinstagram #retrieverpuppy
Reinforcement drives behavior. Will your dog leave a food puzzle for you? Will they leave it alone if you walk away? Will they do it without having to say “leave it” because it’s just automatic based on the reinforcement history? Can you count the verbal cues provided here? Do you see the “treats” (that’s a trick question because I’m not using any because #science). If you’re tired of chasing your puppy or trying to micromanage them with a set of generic behaviors like sit, down, stay, leave it, etc that don’t teach you how to actually integrate your dog into your life, we can help. Happy Sunday and happy training y’all. Have fun with your dogs. Team work makes the dream work!!! Check out a student from our Puppies in the Wild family!! I LOVE seeing our families integrate working with their tiny humans. There is soooo much to notice in this video as well. 1) notice the puppy is calmly engaging without jumping, mouthing, or crawling on the tiny human. We teach you how to do safely do this in the course 2. Notice that even the tiny human is using better mechanics than I see in many training videos by professionals (also something we teach in the course as poor mechanics will lead to poor results) 3) the parent is clicking and supervising to not only ensure safety but also success. 4) the puppy is learning that outstretched hands are POSITIVE 5) outstretched hands may be muzzle punched when the puppy hears “touch” 6)EVERY repetition is a deposit into this puppy’s emotional bank account solidifying a positive relationship between the puppy and the tiny human. 7) plus the puppy is learning a targeting skill which I refer to as a “Swiss army knife” behavior as it serves nearly endless functions.⭐️
.
It’s CRAZY how much can be learned in just a couple of minutes when done correctly. Had this puppy had poor management or poor foundations, this would have been a much different video and unfortunately, one that we see WAY TOO OFTEN.
.
Most puppy classes won’t teach all of the steps to this and many online courses will teach you the “basics”. But notice that this puppy isn’t even being asked to sit because this is our default behavior. ⭐️
.
Anyone can teach a puppy to sit but coaching families on how to integrate puppies into their family safely and successfully involves dozens of steps before we even begin to start asking for things such as a “sit” or a “down”. You can always teach a dog how to lay down but true successfully puppy training looks like this. 🙌🏻.
.
It has truly been a privilege to be able to change so many lives with our Puppies in the Wild course. I am DEEPLY
