Defer & Derek

We lost our beautiful, crazy, wonkey donkey, prince Derek this week. He passed away very peacefully with us around him with his favourite stuffed rabbit which he’s had since being a puppy.

We’ve had the best 7 years with him, and have the best memories of him at the beach, on holidays with all our friends and family, and being the most affectionate boy at home.

We’re missing him incredibly at the moment but know that these memories of him will be with us forever.

We’ll keep this page going to record our adventures with Milo, so maybe we’ll change the name in the future.

Say hello to the newest member of our Family, Milo. He’s a little whippet who has been rescued from the meat trade in China. Look out for updates on how he’s settling in over the next few weeks. We’re so excited to enjoy lots of adventures with him.

Today, sadly we had to say goodbye to our wonderful Defer. He hadn't responded to the steroid treatment for the lymphoma and rather than see him deteriorate further we decided to say goodbye to him today when he could still enjoy a walk, a visit from his fave and some treats before. The vets came to our home so he was comfortable and had Derek, Will and I with him. He was such a good boy, we have wonderful memories with all our family and friends with him. We need to give special thanks to who Deef adored and saved our bacon many times, and who gave the lads such a brilliant start too. Derek seems to be fine so far and we'll keep posting his adventures too.

Lovely morning walk and play in the leaves today. We have to be careful with Derek now and it’s only very short walks, you could tell he thoroughly enjoyed the change of scenery and off lead freedom today.

Deef hates the fireworks, we have Diwali fireworks around here as well as bonfire fireworks so they go on for quite a while and it takes him so long to calm down. Derek literally couldn’t care less though!!

It’s the wonky donkeys 10th Birthday! He’s a bit slower these days and doesn’t walk much now- we’re looking forward to moving soon(ish) to somewhere with a bigger better garden for him and deef to sunbath and sniff to their hearts content...hopefully there will be less squirrels too!

Lazy days with the boys. The lockdown obviously means we’re in more and as much as the lads don’t love the change in routine, the slower weekends chilling out are good for us all!

Lovely evening chill out in the park with the Whipps today. Derek ended up at the vet with pancreatitis last week but is much better now so it was a treat for him after a week at home. @ Leicester, United Kingdom

The boys are back on with now the restrictions have been eased! Deef couldn’t be happier as you can see! Derek is struggling with his legs again and also has had a bit of an upset tum so hasn’t been out yet sadly. Love seeing Deef having such a good time!

Derek discreetly signalling to that be actually would like some toast, then photo two... eaten toast, normal service resumes. That dog absolutely adores bread and has been known to snap it out of hands and even Other dogs mouths. We once walked past another dog who was wrestling a slice of pizza from a hedge and Derek grabbed it and wolfed it down before the other dog even knew what had hit him!

It’s a good job the sun is shining while we’re all locked down! The boys are absolutely loving the sun again. I’d forgotten how much more relaxed they are when it’s warm and sunny. We’re all missing seeing and Suki, although Derek seems stiff again in his back legs so just short walks for a while for him- not that you’d be able to tell from some of the positions he gets himself into!

The Whipps have been pretty lazy while we’ve both been working from home so it was great that they had a fab afternoon with socialising and playing. They’re of course shattered now!

We’ve had a rough few days with the Whipps as both have been a bit under the weather but they seem to be on the mend, just in time for a weekend away we had booked. Living their best lives!

The boys have been visiting grandparents today. They went to visit my gran in her care home, she used to love seeing them (last pic is from before) so I love that she can see them and stroke them still. The other residents always make a fuss of them and enjoy seeing them too!
