Kangaroo K9 Conditioning Fitness, Conditioning and Body Awareness for Dogs

13/01/2025

Still relevant and so important so will share this one year later.
Every dog is different, V’Ariel tends to fidget in position more when she is tired, Thistle just gets distracted.

V’Ariel’s head nods down have progressed to a raised unstable surface for her hind feet.
The bosu is great for this as it’s one of those ‘stable unstables’, that I can tilt easily to create the best angle for her hind feet.
This increases weight on the front end meaning the nods require more effort than a level surface.
Using the unstable means she has to work harder to stabilise her body whilst doing a dynamic exercise with her shoulders and elbows.
This was her first attempt and we need to work out how far she can nod without flexing her carpi.
This was asking a little too much and I’d like a smoother action so I’ll slow my hand movement down too.
I do love her structure.

Last week we had the final monthly workshop of 2024.
We had first timers and regulars.
I love how the dogs have made progress over this year and how they can gain new skills in each workshop.
Looking forward to 2025, more workshops and maybe I’ll remember to video more skills during workshops😬

We’ve been making progress with head nods as part of shoulder strengthening work.

This was our first time adding the bosu for instability behind. Initially it was about finding the best distance for V’Ariel. We inadvertently found a great set up for planking too, we can use that another time.

Testing a friend’s new platforms when she came to visit recently.

I’ve seen this style around for a while, and haven’t had a need to buy any though.
I liked the stability of the bars, along with the grip on them. She’s going to feed back a few things that I think could be improved mostly for safety and non slip reasons. You might see I placed a non slip mat between the bars.

Thistle is working on stillness and tuck sit mechanics and he’s make fab progress.

I noticed this fur change with V’Ariel and recently it got more obvious.
I found a trigger point underneath after she’d been a bit wild at training, so she’s been seen by the physio who’s actually really pleased with the improvement in her shoulder muscles.
She couldn’t find anything else that was tight or uncomfortable and the area loosened up with laser and massage really well.
We will keep a close eye on it, the fur is a bit smoother on her back generally.
The physio asked her if she could avoid flying off Aframes at training 😬.
When we first went to this physio V’Ariel was so excited she wasn’t easy to examine as she just wanted to bounce and wiggle. We’ve worked on being calm and it’s much easier to examine her now, she can now mostly stand still when I ask for stillness - with the odd wiggle😂.

🦘I’ve spent so long trying to find the best tripod/ camera holder for filming.

🦘A few weeks ago I broke my best option so far 😥

🦘Today I discovered this is pretty much perfect 😂😂😂.

Bow -
V’Ariel has been tending to flex her stifles when doing this exercise so I’ve been working on the hindlimb position for this.
Now she has more stretch in her hamstrings we can work towards tweaking the rest of it and getting really good shoulder extension and movement.

She was a little tight in her left trapezius after a slip turning on the flat in August so I’m not pushing the front end and we’re also working on other shoulder strengthening exercises.

I’m still in the process of working out the best distance for the platforms as she offers so much hindlimb extension naturally.

Thistle now 12 weeks.

A little bit of rear foot targeting, using canineconditioningcoach walking forwards method.

So keen to do stuff albeit a little bit clumsy at the moment.

V’Ariel has had a busy few weeks at agility shows.

It’s been great experience for us both, so I’m now creating a plan for the Autumn and Winter.

This includes fitness and agility skills. Courses are quite different to when I last ran a young dog, we’ve learnt a lot and she’s done some fabulous stuff.

She did come away at the end a little bit tight in one shoulder, probably after a slip turning on the flat of all things.

She’s seen the vet and physio, had massage and laser, with a week of gentle exercise and is now back to conditioning work. Shoulders are the top focus to build strength.

Today I just wanted some trot work just to encourage general flexion/ extension so we are back to cavaletti again. 22” distance - not a stretch for her, just a good place to start back. She did such a fab job and her cone turns were lovely as well.

Getting props in the right place is trial and error.

V’Ariel can offer huge hindlimb extension.

She’s much stronger than a few months ago when she could get quite a lot of sideways wobble during bow work in her back end.

This distance works well for her currently.

Looking forward to this

ROCK BACK SIT TO PUSH UP STAND
I left the sound on today as we were working on timing, calmness, stillness and fine tweaking mechanics.

I withheld reward on a few occasions when she predicted the movement change before I asked for it.

I don’t use many verbals.
Push is used for any forward movement when the back feet stay still.
Sit is reminding her to remain in a sit until I ask for something different.

Lots of verbal praise when she gets it right, encouragement when it’s not quite good enough.

She’s coming back from her spay well, her agility is progressing and there’s so much speed in the tank!
