Sparrow and Bonnie had a big day! They moved to a new home on several acres. For the next few months we will be apart, but they have a wonderful person who is leasing them and will take care of them like her own. We are very lucky!
To transfer all of Sparrow’s behaviors, I will be taking some videos and it will be fun to post them and have a look at how far he has come.
New things, new adventures!

We had a pony sort of day. I only had a few minutes and didn’t intend to ride but… it was warm and sunny and…somehow we found ourselves cantering across the pasture.
It’s nice just to be together.

It is so lovely to have horses that will mosey up for hoof care and stand at liberty while you do what’s needed. Willing participation can’t be beat.

People get worried. “Will they EXPECT the food?” Yes. Yes they will. Don’t they deserve it? Isn’t he adorable? It’s a feature, not a bug.

Nerding out over stimulus control with my buddy. We did some longe line work and he nailed 100% of his transitions on verbal only, both directions. AND stayed balanced and supple. You’ve come so far, little brown Sparrow!

Bonnie.
I haven’t worked Bonnie in forever, and she is getting the hang of riding again. It’s taking her a minute or two to remember her lessons from a year ago, but she’s trying her hardest and happy to train for snackies. Of the horses, she is definitely the most food motivated and easy to train with food rewards!
Here she is in her post-ride dustbath chic.

These are two Very Sincere Ponies. They sincerely like snackies, that is.
Sparrow was super motivated and forward today! We had a lot of fun cantering around the pasture. He still likes to stop and throw lateral work at me sometimes if he thinks he hasn’t had a snackie in a while. But mostly today we rewarded forward to try to balance that out 😂
Sparrow is really figuring out how to just canter along instead of getting too excited. We are going to try to go to the arena tomorrow and see if we can get some decent laps in. Then I will really find out how out of shape I am 😂

We will just call this filter “duskwiggle.”
I trotted out to see Sparrow at sunset after a long few days of work. Did not intend to ride and somehow fell into a quick jaunt in capris and “out on the town” shoes 😅
Sparrow was a darling angel baby and did some long and low trotting, some figure 8s, an enthusiastic canter and some sideways flormps which are his favorite thing. He loves to go sideways. Need a bumper sticker that says “I ♥️ Lateral Work.”
Both ponies are enjoying their restful winter agendas and their strong winter hooves.

The face of a Good Boy who has just been informed of his Good Boyness.
Between tornados and rain and cold we had a sunny 50 degree day!
We worked on transitions and brought back in a little canter. He is having fun with this and working nicely. It’s almost harder now that he is Pretty Good at Everything, but I don’t have the skill to really elevate him into dressagey or advanced work. We need to figure out what else we can work on in the pasture so we aren’t just doing the same little circles every time. 🤔

Snack time! Sparrow and I had a nice ride. We worked on trotting and going sideways. He is suspicious about why I am not asking to canter and he tried offering it twice. Yes, it is fun. No, you can’t just throw it at me to earn snackies. Silly horse.

Today was a Cozy Ride. I let Sparrow decide where he wanted to go, and he got lots of snackies for things like You Took Three Steps Forward and What A Nice Head Position and Your Ears Are Cute.
We did a little wandering, a little lateral work, and focused a bit on our trot cues and getting a slow, easy NOT CANTER trot departure.
We both had a nice time.

Apparently this was the best picture I could take last time I visited Sparrow 🫣🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Bitless trail ride day!

✅ relaxed on the trail
✅ learning to keep his distance
✅ no spookiness
✅ crossed all the mud and water
✅ hopped the little log
❌ decided to crow hop and rear and try to murder me when a group of other horsies were far ahead and I wouldn’t let him run up to them
❌ twice

Someone always has to be just a little bit exhausting.

Mr. Sparrow really impressed me at the show. Besides being relaxed enough for a child to ride him, he also didn’t blink at the giant pumpkin inflatables or the horses in costume.
He also didn’t get worked up over seeing the other horses trotting around or away from him! The only time he got antsy was when one person who was very short on etiquette cantered by our trailer within 6 feet of him twice. I had polite/firm words and it did not happen again 😵‍💫
He ate, drank and even took a nap tied to the trailer.
He was a good boy in his classes except that he has forgotten his trot cues and only wanted to canter off from a walk so we placed last every time 🤣
We did a lot of cantering off in our lesson that morning so I will work on making those cues a little more discrete.
Speaking of which, Sparrow is loving his jumping and hurtling himself very enthusiastically towards the obstacles! He seems to think it’s pretty fun being an agility horse.

Sparrow had a wonderful day! We went to lessons this morning and rode with two other horses. He is learning to walk and trot around without feeling like he has to buddy up or chase them. Crossing my fingers this will help back on the trails.
He was also throwing me this amazing collected canter. We’ve never actually “worked” on it but somehow it’s getting cued and I have been capturing it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ He’s like a floaty little rocking horse.
And last he is still enjoying his jumping and we did our first combination today! He’s very focused and willing and also very confident that as soon as he hits the rail it is time to screech to a stop for a treat 🤣
Couldn’t ask for more from this funny fellow today.

This morning we visited a local arena and worked in the round pen. Sparrow put a lot of effort in and did great with the noises, bikes and people all around. He’s definitely distracted, and we spent most of our riding time just getting him to focus and relax. But it’s one more step in the right direction!

Here is an Arabian that is standing politely instead of snorting and hopping around because his new horse bff of 5 minutes has left the arena. This Arabian is not exhausting and silly. I choose to love this Arabian today.
