The Modern Mouse

The love for mice started in August 2019. I was approved for a pet grant for my classroom and decided a small rodent would be the best addition for my students. I felt that mice would show my students that even though other people may find rodents unappealing, that we must love all the creatures on our Earth. It all started with 3 feeder mice (Minnie Mouse, Pinkie Pie and Biscuit), but I soon found myself looking at the issues that came with feeder mice. While I loved them dearly, they were not too happy being handled, were nervous around my students, and were not looking at a very long life. Soon, I was forced to remove them from my classroom due to the stress they were displaying from the noise of classroom happenings. That is where my research began.

I, soon, found that there were show type mice being bred to have calmer temperaments and live longer, healthier lives. This is where I wanted to be. I wanted to focus on bettering the pet market for mice, enabling buyers to have a better choice for their mice, rather than buying from large pet stores.

The mice at The Modern Mouse have been hand selected to better the pet mouse population. Temperament and health are our main focuses, while building our colony from quality show type mice from quality breeders. Our current lines include blue, chocolate, black, roan and merle in both rex and standard coats. We focus on small litters to ensure our babies have the best possible start for a longer, healthier life than feeder type mice.
