(Published out of order) Abilene is learning about some marker words! No means change what you’re doing, good means keep it up and yes mean that was perfect come and get it! This session was focused on no :)
Abilene learns about consistent handling and her handler is also conditioning her communication markers. She starts off with learning that staying on the little platform even if I start to move around is still super rewarding. She’s also learning that once the leash starts it doesn’t stop until she goes with it. The active pops help her to go with it and interrupt her focus elsewhere instead of just flat out pulling against the leash. Once she gets ahold of the idea (which is easy for her because the handler is CONSISTENT), we then start to increase the distraction by tempting with some yummy chunks of hotdog just out of reach. Once she starts to put forth some effort and achieve success I give her a quick fun break. This little break is so important because when she comes back to her work she’s confident that she can do it again and does an even better job!

Using the clicker and his lunch to start Fido’s First Year Douglas on a chin rest (great for pictures, quieting body language and steadying his head for eye/ear inspection, and great as a piece of other tricks) and the start of rollover! Remember to “take a picture” with your click to help the dog understand exactly what it is you are trying to get them to do more of. Corduroy is the cutest, happiest cuddliest smartest chill little boy there’s ever been. Absolutely love this little guy. His crate training and potty training are going great and his on leash skills are shaping up. Love him!!

Douglas learning the very first step of the leash: that the end of the leash means you can go no further. Then when he gives into the leash pressure just the slightest bit I give an obvious release of any pressure. Think big release! Make it clear to the dog what the answer is.
Most pups have a much bigger fit than this but Douglas and Corduroy have both been clear headed pups with minimal outbursts. It’s been so refreshing!

Fido’s first 36 hrs!
Lots of new sights sounds and smells. Showing them a new routine together (they will start separation soon), and getting to know their personalities and tics. They arrived in the afternoon and had a bit of an early dinner. The next day I started feeding by hand as you can see in the video. They definitely want to retreat when something is super scary but recovery is fast. So far water intake is only outside and inside they are penned together with a blanket and wire bottom so any accidents will fall under their floor and not soil themselves. No water after 7 pm, no food after 6 pm. They were clean overnight which was super awesome. Already quieting down when contained behind a barrier but Corduroy did a ton of protesting. I try to take them out to potty BEFORE they start whining and having to go.
