SaskPets

SaskPets SaskPets is Saskatchewan's Pet Community! Online Pet Directory, Local Products and more!

SaskPets was created to build a community to connect pet owners with local businesses, products, services, rescues, activities and events that are all about our special family members, our pets! We love to see people supporting other local businesses as much as possible which is why SaskPets has listings of only-local businesses within Saskatoon and a 30km radius. We want to help make it easy for

pet owners to search and find what they are looking for locally as much as possible. Whether you are looking for a handmade dog collar, a new groomer or vet or want to find out which stores and patios are pet friendly. This directory doesn't just focus on dogs and cats but also birds, reptiles, small animals and fish, because they are also beloved members of the family.

Local Business Feature: The Purrfect Cup Cat Cafe

The Purrfect Cup Cat Cafe is the first and only Cat Cafe in Saskatoon. The Cafe is home to many cats that live cage free together while they look for their forever homes. Enjoy a tasty beverage or snack while enjoying the company of many adorable kitties, maybe you'll even find your new family member!

The Cats in the Cafe come from different Saskatchewan rescue organizations and shelters. They range in age and an all have unique personalities. There is a small entrance fee into the cafe, no reservations required. Children must be supervised at all times and everyone is expected to be respectful of the cats and cat things.

The Purrfect Cup is also currently fundraising to open a larger space, away from the Downtown area, to offer more services and a safer and even better set-up for the cats. If you would like to support their GoFundMe, you can do so at https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-the-cat-cafe-escape-vandalism

Local Business Feature: Institute of Canine Psychotherapy

We all know of the challenges faced by rescue organizations and shelters, but did you know that behavioral issues are one of the leading causes of surrender and relinquishment? Additionally, dog lovers wanting to help are often hesitant to adopt or foster due to behavioral concerns, especially dogs in the adolescent stage, and pet parents often feel out of options in addressing challenging behaviors.

Billie Groom has been involved in rescue, rehabilitation, and welfare for almost four decades. Her extensive knowledge comes from working hands-on with hundreds of dogs per year and their caregivers. Billie attributes her success as a behaviorist to her method - a non-harmful, science based method that is easy to apply! Canine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (yes, it follows the same principles as CBT for humans) recognizes emotions driving behaviors, allows for autonomy and agency, and encourages processing and decision making, making it the most effective method in addressing behaviors associated with anxiety, aggression, and with dogs over 6 months of age.

After completing courses in canine brain development and PhD courses in Animal Cognition and Emotion, she opened the Institute of Canine Psychotherapy (ICP), offering a Diploma in Canine Psychotherapy, along with courses provided by scientists, vets and industry experts. ICP is a leader in canine behavior and welfare, dedicated to providing industry professionals, such as trainers, behaviorists, pet care givers, rescuers, and educators with the most advanced skills to elevate their career and reach their goals to make a difference in the lives of dogs. Pet parent programs are also available!

Some new things are coming to SaskPets to provide more, in hopes of being able to better support our wonderful community, and SaskPets as a whole.

Along with our current offerings of our online directory, event calendar, business and rescue features, sponsorship options and advertising we will be branching into our own line of pet products.

If you have been following SaskPets for a while you may have seen a post sharing my journey of moving out of the city to our current property with dreams of building our own farm, creating products for pets and people from our farm and setting up a space for fostering rescue animals. Well...we have decided to make our line of pet products under the SaskPets name, not to compete with the other amazing local businesses in our community, but to complement what they already offer.

We plan on bringing out multiple pet food/treat options as well as other health and wellness products, toys, accessories and more. Products that are mainly made from things grown and raised on my personal farm, other small local farms/businesses and collaborations with other small businesses. Creating handmade products that are unique and different from those already on the market, sourced locally, and selling them in our online store. We have hopes of also offering other locally made products for sale again, from other SK small businesses and creating a community store where buying quality, local products is easy, convenient and affordable.

We want to provide some quality, nutritious, delicious and different local products for pet owners and wholesale options for local pet stores. It will also provide another revenue stream to help continue the building of the SK pet community, SaskPets website and our reach, as well as our future plans of building a safe space for working with multiple local rescue organizations and foster animals. This is something near and dear to my heart and along with helping the animals we hope to document our journey to help provide education about fostering animals and our local animal rescues/shelters.

If you have any thoughts on types of products you would like to see for your pet, let us know!

I came across www.PetRescuetoolkit.ca the other day thanks to Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan's post, printed off the reference guide, and am looking forward to reading through the full document.

This could be a great resource for those already involved in rescue or those looking to get more involved or started. It includes information on Management and Record Keeping, Biosecurity, Facility Design, Sanitation, Health, Handling and much more!

I am hoping to learn some information that will be helpful in setting up a small space where I can start taking in multiple foster animals to help some of our local rescues with the overflow issues they are all experiencing. Working towards my dream of creating a safe space for those harder to place foster animals while they get to the point of being able to be placed up for adoption.

Check out the blog post written by Christopher Froess of Kairo's K9s Training in Saskatoon about Service Dog Etiquette in Non-Pet-Friendly Stores in Saskatchewan. You may have seen this earlier last week as it was first shared on their social media but I wanted to make sure it would be available for more to read as it is great information to know!

It provides useful information to read if you are an employee in a store that is not Pet-Friendly and for those that shop these stores and may not know this information. It is important that we be respectful of those that have a disability and require a Service Animal but we also want to make sure that those that bring Service Animals into places where Pets are not allowed are doing so because they need them, not because they want to take their pet with them wherever they go.
