Cold weather doesn't mean skipping walks, but it does mean taking extra precautions. Follow this checklist before heading out to keep your dog safe and comfortable.
Before you leave:
1. Check the temperature and wind chill factor
2. Apply paw balm to protect against ice and salt
3. Put on a reflective vest or light-up collar
4. Dress short-haired dogs in weather-appropriate coats
5. Bring water even on short walks
During the walk:
6. Stick to cleared paths when possible
7. Keep walks shorter than usual in extreme cold
8. Watch for signs of discomfort like limping or whining
9. Avoid areas treated with chemical de-icers
10. Keep your dog on leash for better control on ice
After you return:
11. Wipe all four paws with a warm damp cloth
12. Check between toes for ice balls or irritation
13. Dry your dog thoroughly if they got wet
14. Inspect paw pads for cracks or damage
15. Offer fresh water and let them warm up gradually
Winter walks can be safe and enjoyable with proper preparation. Your dog still needs exercise and mental stimulation regardless of the weather.
