Guinea pigs are adorable little creatures who love to explore their surroundings, but when it comes to wheels and running balls, they might want to sit this one out. While these contraptions may seem like a fun way for your furry friend to get some exercise, they can actually be quite dangerous. Wheels have been known to cause back injuries and even spinal damage while running balls can overheat and leave your guinea pig gasping for air. So let's stick to traditional forms of playtime. Trust us, your pint-sized pal will thank you for keeping them safe and sound.

Did you know that guinea pigs have specific names for males and females? A male guinea pig is called a "boar," while a female is called a "sow." The main difference between the two is that boars have external genitalia, making them easier to identify. Additionally, boars tend to be larger and more dominant than sows, which can affect their behavior and social interactions with other guinea pigs. So whether you're looking for a little guy or gal to snuggle up with, understanding these basic differences will help you choose the perfect furry companion.

If you live in a cold environment, your guinea pigs might be feeling the chill... literally! If you are concerned about your guinea pigs staying warm, there are some easy solutions to keep them nice and toasty. A great tip is to put extra hay in their cage: not only does it help provide insulation, but it also creates a snug little hideaway for your guinea pigs! You can then drape some blankets or towels across the front and back of the cage for extra protection from the chilly air. Not only will this keep your cavies cozy, but it will look rather stylish as well! After all, who wouldn't want to curl up with a blanket during winter? Guess that includes guinea pigs too!

Is your piggy just staring at those veggies? Guinea pigs that have recently transferred ownership can sometimes take a while to adjust to a new environment, and it's possible your newly adopted pet is feeling uncomfortable about their surroundings right now. It also helps to have other furry friends around, as many guinea pigs like having roommates. Think of them like frat boys: not much good happens if they don't have someone by their side. And while we've all had those days when nothing looks appetizing, if the problem continues it may be worth checking that your guinea pig's back teeth are okay - sometimes they overgrow and clock in their tongue! If you need a quick fix to keep your buddy healthy during this transition period, grab some Oxbow Critical Care supplement, but if the problem persists make sure to call up the vet - they'll set you straight in no time.

Getting the smell out of guinea pig bedding or fleece liners is quick and relatively painless if you know what to do. The simple solution? Wash with detergent, hot water, and white vinegar (about half a cup). It helps to make sure you use a detergent that gets rid of bacteria and odors, otherwise, you could just be transferring those bad smells from one place to another. A word of warning: don't use fabric smells or softeners as they will only lock in the stench and make it much harder to get rid of. With this easy method, you'll be snuggling with your piggies in no time!

31/01/2023

🔶 When it comes to the cost of owning a guinea pig, it's important to consider not only the initial purchase price or adoption fee, but also the ongoing expenses. These can include food, bedding, toys, and veterinary care. Guinea pigs need a high-quality diet of hay, fresh vegetables, and a small amount of pellets to stay healthy.

✔️On average, buying a guinea pig from a pet store can cost between $30 and $60, with specific breeds, like Abyssinian, costing more. Adopting a guinea pig from a shelter or rescue organization typically costs around $10-40, with some additional fees for supplies.

🔶In addition, they also require a clean and comfortable living space, such as a cage or hutch, with plenty of bedding and room to move around. And like all pets, guinea pigs may need occasional trips to the vet for check-ups, vaccinations, and treatment of any health issues that may arise.

✔️ Another important factor to consider when deciding whether to buy or adopt a guinea pig is the source. If you choose to buy a guinea pig, it's important to do your research and make sure you're getting your new pet from a reputable source. Some pet stores and breeders may not prioritize the health and welfare of their animals, so it's important to ask questions and visit the facility in person if possible.

30/01/2023

🔶 When it comes to choosing a cage for your guinea pig, there are a few key factors to consider. The first and most important is size. Guinea pigs need plenty of room to move around, so it's important to choose a cage that is at least 7.5 square feet for one guinea pig and at least 10.5 square feet for two. The cage should also be tall enough for your guinea pig to stand up on their hind legs and stretch out.

✔️ Another important factor is ventilation. Guinea pigs need plenty of fresh air, so it's important to choose a cage with good airflow. Look for a cage with wire sides and a solid top, as this will allow for plenty of air circulation.

🔶 Material is also an important consideration. Plastic cages can be easier to clean, but they can also retain odors and may not be as durable as metal cages. Metal cages are more durable and provide better ventilation, but they can be more difficult to clean.

✔️ Finally, consider the overall design of the cage. Look for one with plenty of hiding spots and places for your guinea pig to play and explore. A cage with multiple levels is also a good option, as it gives your guinea pig more space to move around and helps to prevent boredom.

🔶 Here are five interesting facts about guinea pigs that you may not have known:

✔️ Guinea pigs are not actually from Guinea, but rather originate from the Andes Mountains in South America. They were domesticated by the Inca people.

✔️ Guinea pigs are known for their ability to produce a wide range of vocalizations, including chirping, purring, and squealing. They use these sounds to communicate with each other and with their human caregivers.

✔️ Guinea pigs have poor eyesight, but have an excellent sense of smell and hearing. They also have a keen sense of touch and can be very affectionate with their human caregivers.

✔️ Guinea pigs are social animals and in most cases should be kept with at least one other guinea pig for companionship. They can also be kept with other small animals, such as rabbits and ferrets, as long as they are properly introduced and there is enough space for everyone.

11/01/2023

🔶 Guinea pigs are naturally clean animals, and they typically don't need baths very often. In fact, bathing too frequently can actually be harmful to their delicate skin. However, there are times when a guinea pig will need a bath, such as if they fall into something dirty or if they're shedding excessively.

🔶 Learning how to bathe your guinea pig can be a fun bonding experience for both of you! Follow these steps for a smooth and stress-free bath time:

✔️ Step One: Before you start the bathing process, you'll need to gather a few things:
- a sink, tub, or small plastic kiddie pool
- warm water
- mild soap
- a soft towel
- guinea pig shampoo (optional)

✔️ Step Two: Warm up some water in a sink or tub. Next, add a dollop of mild soap to the water and mix it around until it's evenly distributed

✔️ Step Three: Gently lower your guinea pig into the water. If they're resistant at first, try offering them a treat so they associate bath time with something positive.

✔️ Step Four: Use a small amount of shampoo to wash your guinea pig, being careful to avoid their eyes and ears.

✔️ Step Five: Once you've rinsed your guinea pig, use a soft towel to dry them off.
