Voorhees Animal Orphanage is a community shelter and adoption center serving 25 towns in southern NJ We are also an Adoption Center.
Voorhees Animal Orphanage (VAO) was founded in 1988, and we are a community shelter, providing services for cats and dogs for 28 towns across southern NJ, 19 of which are located in Camden County. That means when space allows, we are able to rescue cats & dogs from over-crowded, high-kill shelters and rescues. We work with local, regional and national shelters and rescue groups, saving lives where
ver and whenever we can. More than half of the revenue necessary for operations is provided by a strong community of donors and supporters. An equally robust community of hard-working volunteers supports our experienced staff members in providing care for all of the animals that come through our doors. Please consider supporting our efforts at www.vaonj.org/donate! VAO provides municipal sheltering services for the towns of: Audubon, Berlin Borough, Berlin Township, Cherry Hill, Chesilhurst, Clementon, Collingswood, Gibbsboro, Gloucester City, Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, Laurel Springs, Lawnside, Magnolia, Merchantville, Stratford, Voorhees, Woodlynne and Waterford Twp. We also serve 9 municipalities in Salem County: Alloway, Elmer, Elsinboro, Mannington, Oldmans Twp, Pilesgrove, Quinton, Upper Pittsgrove and Woodstown. We encourage you to visit us and meet our beloved orphans. While here you will see that we are at long last in our highly anticipated new facility! While the project is complete, we are still in need of funding. Please consider making a donation that will help us reach our goal of being debt-free! www.vaonj.org/donate
Please note that we are closed to the public every MONDAY for deep cleaning and staff in-service training. Visit www.vaonj.org to learn more!

Cherry is a 5 year old Bully-mix with a very sweet disposition. She is a true house dog who is very scared and unsure of what she is doing here at the shelter. She is house-broken and knows her basic commands. Cherry is friendly with other dogs, but we think she would prefer to be your one and only. This smart girl has a great medium energy and listens well. She does enjoy her yard time, so a fenced yard would be ideal.
Come to the VAO to meet Cherry soon. 🍒
Clyde is a 6 month old grey & white guy who came to us as a stray. He's very shy and sits in the back of his cage and often goes unnoticed. He'll need a patient owner in a quieter home with no young children. But he might like having a kitty buddy to show him the way. If you think you have what it takes to help this dear boy be the best he can be, please stop by the VAO and say hi to Clyde. 💙 https://www.vaonj.org/adopt/cats/

Chief is an 8 month old Shepherd mix. He is a sweet, happy, active puppy looking for a great new home. He likes other animals and will do well with a doggy companion. Chief would love an owner that can provide daily exercise and some basic training too. He is recommended for a home with a fenced yard and older children.
He will steal your heart! ❤️
Libby is looking for someone to love... could that be you? This 10 year old little lady with the light green eyes enjoys gentle pets and yummy treats and will do best in a quieter home with older kids. She doesn't ask for much and she shouldn't be living in a shelter. If you'd like to make a difference in the life of a deserving senior cat, please stop by the VAO today and ask to meet Libby. 💚 https://www.vaonj.org/adopt/cats/

Sweet girl Oreo has had a rough start to life; at only 1 year old she has already been bounced around so much. Oreo came to us from a deplorable living situation and was never treated like a family member. She is ready to find a new home and owners who will love her forever.
Oreo lived with cats, other dogs, and older kids as well. We think she'd love adopters who will stay active with her, and maybe a fenced yard where she can run and play. She will need a family that will be patient as she learns what it's like to be a house dog. Oreo does know some basic commands already and should catch on quickly with training.
If you think you'd like to add this pretty girl (and her ears!) to your family, come by soon and ask to meet miss Oreo at the VAO!
Jackie wants you to know she is now accepting pets at PetSmart! This 2 year old black & white beauty was very shy when she first joined us. But she's been warming up nicely and has become quite the lovable little girl. She enjoys when we pet her and will rub her head into our hands to make sure we keep petting her. If this tuxedo sweetie sounds like the one for you, please send us your application via our website and we will arrange for you to meet Jackie. She'll be waiting for you at PetSmart on Rte 73 in West Berlin, NJ and she hopes to see you soon! ❤ https://www.vaonj.org/adopt/cats/

Our bestie Joe Shmo is still waiting very patiently for his family to come along and adopt him…
Joe Shmo was born malformed and sadly never received medical care as a young puppy. He has elbow and hip dysplasia along with some curved bones. He does not let this affect his personality though- Joe Shmo LOVES people and craves your attention. He is a silly boy with tons of personality that keeps us smiling. Joe loves his walks and also enjoys playing in the yard. He will do well with other dogs, cats and older kids too. He is only a baby at a year old, and has his whole life ahead of him. Joe is currently hanging out in foster care and his foster mom could not say better things about him!
If you are looking to rescue a special needs sweetheart, please complete an application for Joe and we will schedule a meet & greet for you. ❤️ https://www.vaonj.org/adopt/dogs/

Holly & Jolly are 3 1/2 month old little dollies who came to us as strays. They spent time in a fabulous foster home and are now ready to find their forever home. They are friendly and playful and as cute as can be. And because they are quite bonded, we would like for them to be together forever. If you have room in your heart and home for a couple of super sweet sisters, please send us your application via our website and we will arrange for you to meet Holly & Jolly. They'll be waiting for you at PetSmart on Rte 70 in Marlton, NJ and they hope to see you soon! 💕 https://www.vaonj.org/adopt/cats/

Pebbles is a 1 year old Shepherd mix. She has a fun-loving personality and loves people. Pebbles is still growing and is not recommended for apartment living. This pretty lady is very dog friendly and will make a playful friend for your current pup. She does want a fenced yard and will be happiest in an active family environment.
Coco is all dressed up with nowhere to go! This 2 year old tuxedo was found as a stray. He's a friendly fellow and is very affectionate. And because he sometimes gets overstimulated and may swat or hiss a bit, we would recommend a home with older kids. But he wants to be a good boy and is really quite lovable and he deserves to find a family. Please stop by the VAO soon and give Coco somewhere to go... like home! 🐾 https://www.vaonj.org/adopt/cats/

Cash & Tango are sweet little puppies who are ready for her forever families! They are 4 month old mixed breeds and are friendly with everyone and everything. Cash & Tango love the company of other dogs and would be happiest with a dog at home to show them the way. They will do well in homes with families that have the time to raise and train a puppy. They’d love some children to play with and a fenced yard too.

Whisky is a 5 year old, small-medium breed mix. This friendly fella is happy, smart and eager to be your friend. He loves his walks and is good on the leash. He has a mellow temperament and is going to make a nice family companion dog. Whisky may do well with other dogs and is also kid friendly. He does have an old leg injury, but he doesn't let that bother him one little bit!
Come meet wonderful Whisky at the VAO very soon! 💙

It’s Puppy Palooza at the VAO!! These darling babies were quite the surprise to us all when their mommy gave birth in her kennel! She has taken such good care of them but now they are weaned and ready to find their forever families! ❤️
These kids will need adopters with the time and patience to raise a very young puppy. They are still working on potty training and are not going to be suitable for someone who has to leave them alone all day long. These pups are a rough and tumble little group and would be best for dog savvy kids. They are currently hanging out in foster homes while they wait to find families.
If you think you fit the bill for one of these peanuts, fill out your application today!

Frosty!
Frosty is a fabulous, 2 year old Collie/Pyrenees mix. He has one blue eye and an adorable nubby tail. He is a very smart and sweet pooch with a great energy about him. Frosty is super smart, and very social. He will do well in a home with older children, primarily because he likes to give hugs when he first sees you😃.
Frosty's family must understand that he will need regular grooming to maintain his gorgeous, thick coat.
Come meet this holly, jolly soul at the VAO today!

Today is a good day to meet Duke!
Duke is a sweet 4 year old mixed breed. He loves everyone he meets and has a very nice personality. Duke loves a daily walk and has the perfect medium energy. He likes other dogs and kids as well. Duke does have environmental allergies and will need an owner that will continue his allergy care. We've put him on non-prescription, sensitive skin and stomach food, and he is doing much better already!
Duke is a great family dog and the shelter is no place for this lover boy.
Meet Duke at the VAO today!
We open at noon.

Mama Llama
Llama is a 2 year old Shep-mix who came to us from a bad situation. We knew that she had been used for breeding, but imagine our surprise when she started to give birth shortly after she arrived! Llama had 6 healthy pups and was the best Mom! Her puppies are currently in foster care (and available for adoption). and now it's Mama Llama's turn to find a forever family of her own.
Llama is a very smart girl who is initially shy and leery of strangers. Once she gets to know you, her affectionate personality shines through! Llama would love a quieter, lower-traffic home with a fenced yard. She is dog friendly, and may make a great companion to your current pooch too!
With a little bit of patience and training, Llama promises to love you unconditionally for the rest of her life ❤ Come meet her at the VAO soon.

Connor
Connor is a 4 year old ruggedly handsome fellow looking for a loving home. He's a gentle soul and doesn't ask for much and spends his days snoozing on his pillow. When we open his cage, he rubs his head against our hands and makes biscuits to show us how happy he is for the attention. We've also learned that Connor is FIV+ which means his immune system is compromised. But he is doing well and can still live a happy and healthy life. If this tabby teddy bear sounds like the one for you, please stop by the VAO today and ask for Connor. 💙

Toffee
Toffee is a petite tabby miss who came to us as a stray and looks to be about 4 years old. She can be a bit shy and often goes unnoticed. But she warms up nicely and enjoys getting gentle pets and playing with her toy mouse. We think she'll do best in a quieter home with older kids. And she she'll need time to settle into her new surroundings. If you'd like to give a very nice cat a home for the New Year, please stop by the VAO and ask to meet sweet Toffee. 💕

Get to Know the VAO
The Voorhees Animal Orphanage (“VAO”) is a Municipal Animal Shelter dedicated to providing shelter, food and medical care to stray and unwanted animals, until permanent homes can be found. We presently serve 19 municipalities in Camden County NJ. That is more than half of the county! We also serve 7 municipalities in Salem County as well. If your cat or dog gets lost in these areas, odds are they will be brought to the VAO. We do not discriminate against any breed, nor do we turn an animal away due to medical conditions or age. Each and every animal in our shelter receives individual consideration and attention, regardless of the number of animals we may have in our care
We are also an Adoption Center. That means when space allows, we are able to rescue cats & dogs from over-crowded, high-kill shelters and rescues. We work with local shelters such as Burlington County Animal Shelter and Philly ACCT. We’ve worked with shelters in Northern NJ have many rescue partners in southern states, and as far away as Puerto Rico!
In 2019 we were able to save the lives of over 1,800 cats and dogs who made their way to our shelter. We have saved over 30,000 lives since our inception in 1988!
The Voorhees Animal Orphanage is not funded by the county, and receives no state or federal funding either. The only guaranteed income we receive is from the municipalities we have contracts with. Otherwise, we rely very heavily on the generosity of charitable donations to help us meet our budget. We are very grateful to all of our supporters.
There are lots of great ways that you can get involved and join our community. Make sure to follow us on Facebook where we have over 76,000 followers! We are on Instagram (vaonjorg), Twitter and Linkedin too!
Better yet, stop to visit us. We’re located at 419 Cooper Rd in Voorhees, right next to the Firehouse!
