Voorhees Animal Orphanage Voorhees Animal Orphanage is a community shelter and adoption center serving 25 towns in southern NJ We are also an Adoption Center.

Voorhees Animal Orphanage (VAO) was founded in 1988, and we are a community shelter, providing services for cats and dogs for 28 towns across southern NJ, 19 of which are located in Camden County. That means when space allows, we are able to rescue cats & dogs from over-crowded, high-kill shelters and rescues. We work with local, regional and national shelters and rescue groups, saving lives where

ver and whenever we can. More than half of the revenue necessary for operations is provided by a strong community of donors and supporters. An equally robust community of hard-working volunteers supports our experienced staff members in providing care for all of the animals that come through our doors. Please consider supporting our efforts at www.vaonj.org/donate! VAO provides municipal sheltering services for the towns of: Audubon, Berlin Borough, Berlin Township, Cherry Hill, Chesilhurst, Clementon, Collingswood, Gibbsboro, Gloucester City, Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, Laurel Springs, Lawnside, Magnolia, Merchantville, Stratford, Voorhees, Woodlynne and Waterford Twp. We also serve 9 municipalities in Salem County: Alloway, Elmer, Elsinboro, Mannington, Oldmans Twp, Pilesgrove, Quinton, Upper Pittsgrove and Woodstown. We encourage you to visit us and meet our beloved orphans. While here you will see that we are at long last in our highly anticipated new facility! While the project is complete, we are still in need of funding. Please consider making a donation that will help us reach our goal of being debt-free! www.vaonj.org/donate

Please note that we are closed to the public every MONDAY for deep cleaning and staff in-service training. Visit www.vaonj.org to learn more!

Rimmel is still patiently waiting for her forever family to find her. While she was waiting, she turned two years old, which means that she has spent more then half of her life in the kennels. 😢
What's a girl gotta do to get noticed around here?!?!

Rimmel came to the VAO in horrible condition. She was emaciated, filthy, and so scared of everyone and everything. But thanks to our signature VAO TLC, she kicked her sad past to the curb, and has truly blossomed in body & spirit!
Miss Rimmel has quite the fan club here at the shelter, but she can still be initially shy with strangers. Once she trusts you, her playful and affectionate personality shines through! She loves other dogs and will happily keep herself entertained with toys for hours. Rimmel is a smart girl who walks great on leash and quickly learned her basic commands. She loves her people and lights up when she sees a friend.
Rimmel is hoping that her new family understands that they should come to meet her a couple of times before taking her home. She just needs some time to get to know you on her terms, but once you are in her "circle," you are IN her heart forever 💕
That being said, she has grown weary of kennel living and may not make the best first impression if you see her in the kennels. Please ask to meet Rimmel OUTSIDE of her kennel and you will meet the sweet girl that we've all fallen in love with.
Rimmel will make a truly faithful companion. Please ask to meet her at the VAO soon.

Lillian settles into her cage for the night and hopes all of her dreams come true. She's got a cozy bed and a teddy bear and lots of love from her volunteer friends. But what she really needs is a loving home of her own. This 5 month old little doll was rescued by one of our awesome volunteers. She can be very shy and will do best with an experienced owner in a home without small children. But she is as sweet as can be and welcomes gentle pets and will need a kitty buddy to keep her company. If you think this precious girl would be a good fit for your family, please send us your application for Lillian via our website and we will arrange for you to meet her. She'll be waiting for you at PetSmart on Rte 70 in Marlton, NJ and she hopes to see you soon. 🌻

Gianna is a 2 year old, beautiful, blue bully girl! She is gentle, smart and very sweet. Gianna is shy and unsure of herself here in the shelter environment. But once she gets to know you, she loves you with her whole heart❤ Gianna will do great in a quieter home with a patient owner who will go slow with her while she builds her confidence. She is dog friendly and will do well with older, dog-savvy children. Gianna likes her daily walks, but she is so laid back that we bet she'd prefer to snuggle up on the sofa with you.
She is not a fan of being in the kennels, and may not make the greatest first impression if you meet her there. Ask to meet Gianna outside of the kennels, and you will meet the sweet girl that we all love so much.

Note: she is NOT available for adoption and we will not be taking adoption inquiries about her until her 7 day stray hold is up.

Cats like Principal Hancock, a 3-year-old Siamese fellow who was surrendered with some other kitties when their owner moved into an assisted living facility and could no longer care for them. Unfortunately, Principal Hancock had developed a severe and incurable eye infection causing him discomfort and a poor quality of life. After conducting a medical evaluation, our vet felt it was in his best interest to remove his eyes.

Since his procedure he's been adjusting well and continues to crave attention and pets. Luckily the purr-fect adopter scooped him up from the shelter and whisked him away to his forever home.

Your support is what allows Voorhees Animal Orphanage to provide care so many pets desperately need to survive and be adopted by their forever families.

Purrcy is a 6 year old handsome fellow who was rescued from an overcrowded living situation. He came to us with an eye condition called entropion where the eyelid rolls inward causing the lashes to rub against the eye. Thanks to our awesome vet, Purrcy was able have the surgery he needed and is now better and ready to find a family. He's a quiet kind of guy and will do best in a quiet home with older kids. But he is gentle and welcomes pets and he deserves to be in a loving home instead of a cage. If you have a nice quiet home and lots of love to give, please stop by the VAO and pick Purrcy. 💙

Mongo came to us when his owner suddenly died. His sister was quickly adopted, and that made Mongo very stressed. Thankfully some fabulous former adopters swooped in and brought Mongo into their home to give him a much needed break.

But that was just a temporary situation and they were going to have to return him to the shelter. As luck would have it, another awesome foster stepped in so that Mongo didn't have to go back to the kennels. But Mongo stills needs his forever home!

His new foster Mom says that he has been the perfect house guest. He is loving and gentle, and adores being with people. He loves to give kisses and is housebroken too! Yes, Mongo is that great! He just really hates being in the kennels, and we would love for him to go straight from his foster home to his forever home!

Mongo will be visiting the shelter all day TOMORROW (Saturday, March 1st). Come meet this sweet and sensitive 4 year old pooch. He is going to make an amazing new family member!

Dogs like Holly Berry, who came to us horrifically emaciated and scared when she was brought to Voorhees Animal Orphanage. Nothing but skin and bones with the saddest face, one year old Holly Berry had a long few weeks ahead of her. Weak and frail from starvation and neglect, the VAO team knew that she'd need extra care to nurse her back to health both physically and emotionally.
Flash forward to today and just look at how far she's come! Since arriving at VAO back in December she has gained an astonishing 40 lbs. and has regained her trust in humans.

This beautiful girl is now waiting for her fur-ever family to take her home. Holly loves attention and has a happy and loving personality. She will do best with a family that has large breed experience. A quieter low traffic home with a fenced yard would be ideal. Holly is still growing and not recommended for apartment living. She may do well with another dog and we are willing to introduce her to your current pup.

Holly Berry has been through so much in her short life and deserves nothing but the very best from here on out.

Are you ready to help save pets like Holly Berry? Double Your Love NOW through Feb. 28th thanks to our sponsor Tito's Handmade Vodka.

Toffee is the perfect petite sized Boxer mixed breed. She has a nice medium energy to match. Toffee is very shy in the shelter environment. Her perfect home would be a quiet one without noisy children. She enjoys a walk and would be happiest with a nice yard too. Toffee may do well with another dog in the family to help show her the way.

Toffee is looking for a family that will be patient with her as she adjusts to her new surroundings. She is very fearful in the kennels and may not make the greatest first impression if you meet her inside. Ask to meet Toffee outside, and you will see the sweet, shy and gentle soul that she truly is.

If you’re looking for a gentle, laid back lady stop by the VAO to meet Toffee today.

Our Shelter’s Tail.

Get to Know the VAO

The Voorhees Animal Orphanage (“VAO”) is a Municipal Animal Shelter dedicated to providing shelter, food and medical care to stray and unwanted animals, until permanent homes can be found. We presently serve 19 municipalities in Camden County NJ. That is more than half of the county! We also serve 7 municipalities in Salem County as well. If your cat or dog gets lost in these areas, odds are they will be brought to the VAO. We do not discriminate against any breed, nor do we turn an animal away due to medical conditions or age. Each and every animal in our shelter receives individual consideration and attention, regardless of the number of animals we may have in our care

We are also an Adoption Center. That means when space allows, we are able to rescue cats & dogs from over-crowded, high-kill shelters and rescues. We work with local shelters such as Burlington County Animal Shelter and Philly ACCT. We’ve worked with shelters in Northern NJ have many rescue partners in southern states, and as far away as Puerto Rico!

In 2019 we were able to save the lives of over 1,800 cats and dogs who made their way to our shelter. We have saved over 30,000 lives since our inception in 1988!
