Hello there sweetie. This poor soul came into care late last night. This one, known as grassy, had been spotted with attack wounds, and after much consideration and effort was brought into care. The decision to bring an adult wombat into care is not one that is taken lightly, and the practicalities of rescuing one is not easy either. The dedication of some rescuers is nothing short of amazing. Medication, ample feed, and a safe place to recover is what we can offer this one, the rest is up to Grassy. Fingers crossed my friend 🐾❤️‍🩹

What a busy weekend, three new arrivals within two days. Two of these are only short term guests though. Carers often will pass critters on between other carers for multiple reasons. Capacity is a big one, pairing up with others of the same species, personal commitments, specialising in particular animals, amongst other reasons. This is important for the animals wellbeing, and our sanity. This highlights the need for wildlife carers to have open communication, and good relationships, remembering that we are all in this for the best outcome of our beautiful wildlife.
Milly the wombat was with us until her carer was available, along with Mory the Wallaby who will be with us for the week. Also in care this weekend is a lovely sugar glider, W***y Wonga who will be staying with us for rehab, and who we believe will be needing surgery this week. Welcome all ❤️

We are always on the look out for suitable wombat release sites. These need to be in specific areas and postcodes. We are after acreage, with native understory, trees and grasses. We require vacant burrows, in a not too heavily populated wombat area. If you think you may have a suitable property, or know someone who has, please get in contact with us. We put a lot of effort and time into our wombats rehabilitation, so therefore are very particular in finding suitable release sites and are required to release them in the location they were found. Please do not be upset if we do not think your place is quite right. We are currently looking for release locations for McKenzie and Rosie in...

What a hive of activity it's been here for the last week 🐝. We were lucky enough to have the guys from Tricky Tree works here removing dangerous branches from our scary cypress trees What a great, respectful and caring crew they are, we can not recommend them enough! They even installed some nest boxes for the wildlife while they were up there 🦜🐭
This was a government incentive through Emergency Recovery Victoria to help with the clean up post February storms. Well worth the wait and many thanks to all involved 🌿🥰

And then there was 17 wombats....
This little girl was found next to her deceased mum's body last night. They were hit by a car, and fortunately someone driving past noticed her. She is about 2kg at a guess, and if not picked up would not have survived on her own. She looks uninjured, lucky that mum has that big cartilage plate that helps protect them. Big reminder to stop and pouch check please!!!! Welcome into care little Tosh ###

This stunning new guest arrived from the vets tonight. It is a Black shouldered kite, and was knocked by a car. Hopefully just suffering from a huge headache, a bit of R&R in order, and fingers crossed 🦅🌿

Nerena the ringtail, and Doc the resident cockatoo both enjoying munching on some bottlebrush flowers. Doc came from RSPCA as an unwanted or escaped pet and has been with us for over six years. He is very chatty, occasionally breaks into song, but is also VERY bitey and keeps us all continuously entertained.

Thank you all for your support during this last year, both physically and financially, and in getting us out there. We are always looking for ways to improve and better our facilities, our animal enrichment is something we are very proud of, and our knowledge is forever expanding. This is all done with our rescue animals' welfare a top priority 🩷🩷🩷

These two bundles are just too much cuteness. Mia and Matey continue to pouch swap and escape from their own pouches. They do have sharp claws and I normally keep them in separate pouches until their fur is through a bit more, but I'm beginning to think this is unachievable, and I'm getting a bit soft too 😂🥰

🌿 HANDYMAN WANTED 🌿
Bush Beings shelter is in need of a handyman to help with an assortment of jobs. We need our new wombat pen walls sheeted and cut, a new gate and posts installed, shade sails and posts erected, some modifications to existing wombat pens, plus more.
If you are able to help out with any of these please contact us, we have a small budget available 🌿🐾

Lochy and Timmy finally starting to be chums. If there was ever a forced friendship I think they would be in the runnings. They now have a sheltered play area for frolicking, but still have their separate inside tubs with access to heat for overnight and sleep times. Bruno has now left the basket and is in his own inside tub too! Yay for progress 🐾🌿🥕

Terrible night photo, but so gorgeous at the same time. 4am feed and I open the basket to see Mia snuggled into Mateys pouch. She has done this once before when she wet her bed 😂, but this time she just wanted a bed buddy 🥰🥰

Chonk the magnificent Tawny frog mouth was also released today back to his found location. Hopefully his family may be able to identify him, he was only a tiny chick but you never know, nature is truly amazing. Fly free Chonky, and catch lots of moths and beetles 🪲🌿🦉

Bubba the brushtail possum was released back to her found location today. What a view she has! She will be under the watchful eye of her finder who will be helping her to transition back to her wild life. Thank you Craig, and good luck Bubba 🌿💕

Our newest wombat tiny Matey (yet to be named by his rescuer) had surgery today to remove a traumatised tail tip. The decision to anaethetise an animal this immature was not made lightly as it is risky business. Fortunately all went well today and he is sculling down his bottles again already. Thank you Korumburra-kooweerup veterinary clinic for your care and expertise, and keep on keeping on little Matey ❤️❤️❤️

Welcome little Mia who came into care early Thursday 💕 It's early days and she is still very unsettled, but is starting to feed now. Our other recent arrival Bruno is coming along great guns now, and with this newbie, we are back to 14 wombats (+ other critters) in care again

Welcome to little Bruno. He arrived late last night, is 1.5kg, with heaps of bush ticks over his little body. Bruno was found roadside in his deceased mother's pouch and is in early days of his adjusting period. Hoping he settles quickly and learns to love us soon 💔❤️

Time for another comparison 🥰
The lovely McKenzie today (Rosie in the background), and the sweet McKenzie in her first month in care. She has stayed very sweet natured and is in her final stage of care now. She, and we, are waiting for her buddy Rosie to make it to release weight. We like them to be 20kg or more before releasing so they can adequately defend themselves. Hopefully around early spring time for these two 🩷🩷

Mum was hit by a car not far from here. it still amazes me how these little ones can survive, often without obvious injuries after such a traumatic event. These two... Timmy and Bruno, are on two feeds per day, 80-100ml of wombat milk. They love their bottles but are also eating lots of grass, pellets and hay now, and the odd carrots as treats. Wow, wow, and wow. The new enclosure is up and running!!!! Still a few little tweeks needed but definitely usable and in action already. The third final stage wombat pen (finishing school) is almost complete. A lot of hard yakka and time have gone into these. The fabulous five. Our biggest group yet is still going, and growing strong. They have access to sleeping bins, but still prefer to all pile up together. Patty, Wally, Wilma, Hana and Lil Beaker are all fully weaned and enjoy a diet of assorted grasses, hay and native shrubs, pellets and the odd carrots and sweet potatoes as treats.

Matey and Mia. We call these basket babies as they would be in mum's pouch and not seen. Therefore to try and replicate this they spend all their time in pouches, inside a small heated basket.
