Just a little off leash walk with WORTHY. We did a little obedience stuff and changed our pace extremely at different times. This is all just a game to US. WORTHY nor I care where we play. We do this s**t all over the place. I try to film stuff but most of our best FUN stuff comes about in the moment. I’m glad I caught this though!

WORTHY had her second lesson biking with me. This time we hit some tougher terrain. Most of our work for this has been done without me on a bike. WORTHY has a great RECALL, she follows me very well, we have many SIGNALS that are used regularly like GOOD, BAD, OKAY, and NO.

At first I give her a SIGNAL that we are starting. This gets her really excited because we usually play Chase and Catch or Possession Games. Out of excitement and her fascination with tires she begins to target my front wheel as it’s rolling. This is not good! Lol

I apply my punishment SIGNAL “BAD” followed by mid level electric to stop this behavior. After me messing that up a little at first, she is only in need of this reminder a few more times. It’s important to point out that WORTHY has no idea what we are doing. She has seen bikes and tires and most time wants to chase and bite them. We can’t have that!

She also doesn’t really know where to position herself. She comes in front of my bike numerous times. This is not good either. I actually ran over a paw of hers with my back tire. So to get her position correct I use a leash and negative reinforcement. This helps me direct her into the proper spot next to my left side. I can’t give her direction well with an Ecollar so the leash is the best option for that. I use a SIGNAL, BACK, when she forges ahead and talk to her if she goes onto the right side of me.

My SIGNALS - GOOD & NO give her the feedback she understands to find that correct position to safely ride next to me. This is important to me for her safety, but also so other people that we pass can be comfortable seeing her locked in position. Most people would be rightfully leery of a big Rottweiler rushing toward them in the middle of nowhere.

My goal is to give WORTHY freedom within my control and to make sure the general public feels comfortable and safe around a powerful and respected breed of dog. Enjoy watching!

I got WORTHY out in open waters for her second time swimming. We went out to the Allegheny Reservoir.

I brought my paddleboard in hopes of her getting to see it again. I showed her the paddleboard on water last year, as a very young puppy, and she wasn’t feeling it. Anyway, it didn’t go as planned because she bit and popped it. 🤣

We’ll work on the paddleboard next time.

KU$H jumped right in the water as we walked up and WORTHY didn’t seem as hesitant as before. She was walking in the water and she had some exciting energy. This is why she bit the paddleboard. I wasn’t completely ready and she didn’t have anywhere to put that energy.

She was anticipating to PLAY, so the paddleboard got it. Once I gave her the PLAY signal and the ball came out she was ready. She didn’t really hesitate to get in the water over her head until I started with longer throws.

One throw she retreated from because it was too far for her at that time and another she wouldn’t attempt. KU$H was there to retrieve those no problem. WORTHY wholeheartedly watches KU$H’s calm efficient stroke.

WORTHY plays and retrieves many throws from the water as KU$H dissects a tennis ball. We all had FUN!! The most important thing.

This is a long video so I showed the results first. This is WORTHY’s first time in a deep pool. She’s 15 months old and she’s avoided going into bodies of water so far.

I started with making her go in the water despite her wishes. KU$H is swimming and I’m in the water also, to help show, and demonstrate our ability and comfort in the water.

I probably went too fast and could’ve broken this down slower for her in multiple sessions. However, she’s my own dog, I have established a true bond, and I know what she is capable of. I stepped in when she needed help and even assisted her while swimming at times.

My goal was to get her over the fear and to be comfortable jumping in the water. I had limited time with this pool while I was away at a dog workshop so I pushed her past her comfort zone. I’ve wanted to get her in the water all summer, but all the local lakes have had algae blooms.

Next time I’ll use a lifejacket to help her form, buoyancy and comfort. I didn’t start with one because I wanted her to see that she could do it on her own!

Here’s some clips from the first day I attempted to bike ride with WORTHY off-leash. I have her on an electric collar for safety.

I didn’t have to use the electric collar at all because she loves to be with me. We passed traffic, people, and barking dogs.

It was a huge success and this little dude had a great time too!

We didn’t stop our practice of POSSESSION GAMES at Ivan’s Workshop!

After leaving FLORIDA a couple of weeks ago MY PACK & I rolled up the East Coast to HANOVER, PA. We camped for 4 days and had the great opportunity to shadow another more experienced TWC Certified Professional Dog Trainer.

More than that, John Strumsky, is a TRUE MASTER of POSSESSION GAMES, a great trainer, great helper, and TEACHER. His experience shows and I’m GRATEFUL to learn a sliver of the knowledge he has in my 3 days with him.

He was gracious enough to let me work his Malinois rescue, sit in on client sessions, meet many of his many many dogs (LOL), and shared with me insight and understanding of the IGP Sport from a TWC perspective.

LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS DIRECTLY!!

Not someone that repeats something they heard from someone.

MENTORS are better than another tool for your toolbox.

AND I ARE STILL FLOATING FROM A COUPLE WEEKS AGO!! ✨🙌✨

We had the opportunity to attend the POSSESSION GAMES Workshop in Plant City, FL. It was an honor and privilege to step on the personal training field of a 2x WORLD CHAMPION dog trainer proudly with my own dog.

This was truly a PRICELESS experience.

We were among 10 Dog-Handler Teams that had working spots, most of the dogs were under 2 yrs. WORTHY and I stood out among 3 Malinois, a Lakenois, a Mali/GSD Mix, a German Pointer, a Doberman, German Shepherd, and Giant Schnauzer, as the only ROTTWEILER. With 50+ dog trainers in attendance it was apparent that not many of them had seen a Sociable, Obedient ROTTWEILER that could withstand the midday Florida heat. We just came out of a WNY winter and WORTHY is only 12 months old too.

Her physical and mental endurance were definitely on display. During the 4 days of training sessions WORTHY did not let go or drop her tug toy once. UNLESS… I asked her to OUT, then she did drop it flawlessly. Our attitude and joy of playing together could not be mistook, as these pictures show. Without a doubt WORTHY’s thing is POSSESSION GAMES. I’ve known this and played it with her since she was 8 weeks old.

However, in just those 4 days we both grew so much in our skill, understanding, and abilities to PLAY this very important GAME. We received so much great feedback and direction from IVAN BALABANOV himself. Everyone truly enjoyed the workshop. It warmed my heart to hear all the praise of WORTHY from everyone!

SHE MAKES ME LOOK GOOD!

*** HARSH TRUTH for Dog Owners ***

Trying everything under the sun on your own, learning from YouTube dog trainers, and looking for short cuts could be a RECIPE FOR DISASTER. You aren’t a professional dog trainer.

Problem dog behaviors RARELY GO AWAY ON THEIR OWN. As a matter of fact they usually get worse. Thinking your puppy’s bad behavior will just vanish when they become bigger, stronger, and more confident IS PRETTY DUMB.

Expecting individual dogs or dogs of a certain breed to be something they aren’t ISN’T INTELLIGENT either. Natural instincts are not a dog’s choice, they were selectively bred to do that.

It is likely I won’t work with you if you can’t find the TIME TO PARTICIPATE IN YOUR DOG’S TRAINING PROGRAM. Reinforcing behaviors during training does not make them last forever without continued maintenance.

I’VE HAD MANY CONVERSATIONS WITH POTENTIAL CLIENTS WHO SEEM EAGER AND MOTIVATED, BUT ULTIMATELY HAVE EXCUSES, TIME CONSTRAINTS, OR FINANCIAL REASONS TO NOT SCHEDULE OR HIRE A REAL DOG TRAINER.

Don’t waste my time or your own if you’re not ready. I’m trying to help SERIOUS DOG OWNERS, WHO WANT THE BEST for their dogs, and who are COMMITTED TO MAKING NECESSARY CHANGES.

Too many times I’VE SEEN DOGS REHOMED, RETURNED TO THE SHELTER, or worse. An estimated 127,071 dogs are euthanized for behavior problems EACH YEAR IN THE US (Patronek & Dodman 1999). More dogs are entering shelters than are leaving.

Don’t wait to hire a dog trainer until the problem becomes uncontrollable. In all honesty, it’s likely to be a big project if your dog has been performing some nuisance behavior for a long time.

If your dog has already been prescribed PSYCHOTROPIC MEDICATION for behavioral reasons we must have a goal to WEAN THEM OFF their dosage gradually.

If you are ready to finally end the madness and enjoy your dog and life again…

WE MIGHT NOT BE THE BEST FIT FOR EACH OTHER

What would make me say that?

Dog training is a way for me to make a living, no doubt about it. But, in my experience of helping dogs living in shelters, with rescues, or in a family home – I HAVE NEVER TURNED DOWN WORKING WITH ANY DOG.

I WILL – TURN DOWN PEOPLE.

It’s unrealistic to think that I can help every situation first of all. I have my own dogs, I don’t train others dogs for me… I TRAIN DOGS FOR YOU.

If you are stuck in your ways doing the same thing over and over, or harder and harder without results, you should probably take a step back. It’s OBVIOUS what you’re doing ISN’T WORKING.

SOME DOG TRAINERS will make you believe that YOU need to become the “Dog Trainer” and you need to “Give your Dog a Job”. They may even convince you of this over a ZOOM CALL instructing, “Repetition, Repetition – It Builds Muscle Memory”.

THEN YOU HAVE THE TWO SIDES:

One side saying, “Throw Treats on the Floor” and “Avoid Triggers”.

On the other side they use an electric collar for EVERYTHING and shut dogs down for anything that is deemed a “Problem Behavior”.

Neither of these sides is fully considering what makes these dogs tick.

THE GENETIC MAKEUP of individual dogs and different breeds provide instincts that are often labeled as bad behavior. Suppressing these behaviors is a big mistake when they can be used and controlled with the special games we play.

It’s important to identify which natural instincts a dog has so we can play a game that compliments who they are.

Imagine having a HAPPY DOG that genuinely enjoys spending time with you and doing things together, without any manipulation or force involved.

Unfortunately, many people in the dog training world misunderstand this concept and resort to using food as a means of manipulation.
