Dogs possess an extraordinary sense of smell, thanks to an abundance of olfactory receptors in their noses, ranging from 125 million to 300 million or more, depending on the breed. Their highly sensitive olfactory bulb, much larger than in humans, enables them to detect scents at remarkably low concentrations, making their sense of smell significantly more potent. This heightened sensitivity benefits dogs in various olfactory tasks, including tracking and discrimination of different odors.

In the case of environmental allergies, this enhanced olfactory prowess may make even tiny particles from plants or other allergens more potent to dogs. Their ability to detect and react to these allergens is amplified due to their super-sensitive sense of smell. Some specially trained dogs can even identify these allergens, which can trigger allergies in individuals. Additionally, dogs have a dual olfactory system, including the vomeronasal organ, aiding in detecting various scents, including pheromones. Their remarkable scent memory is vital for purposes like search and rescue missions and tracking.

Overall, their extraordinary sense of smell impacts multiple facets of their lives!

Autumn Allergies in Dogs: Know the Culprits 🍂🐶

As autumn leaves fall, so do the top three allergens that can make our furry friends uncomfortable:

1️⃣ Ragweed Pollen: That innocent-looking plant is a big culprit! Ragweed releases pollen in the fall, which can trigger allergic reactions in our dogs. 🌾

2️⃣ Mold Spores: With the dampness of fall, mold thrives both indoors and outdoors. Those rainy days and fallen leaves create the perfect conditions for mold growth, and dogs can be sensitive to mold spores. 🍁🏡

3️⃣ Dust Mites: When the heaters kick in for the first time in the fall, dust mites come out to play. An increase in dust and these tiny critters can contribute to allergies in dogs. 🏠❄️

FAVORITE FOOD: Potatoes of any sort. Fries, chips, mashed, if it’s a potato, he wants it.

ALLERGIES: Too many to list, but thankfully potatoes are not one of them!

FAVORITE ACTIVITY: being with his people and car rides.

BEST WORD TO DESCRIBE THEM: Spirited

DISLIKES: Seizures (he has epilepsy too), and being left at home

FUNNIEST HABIT: jumping into bed and doing a crocodile roll every night.
