When I tell you cabbage worms wreaked havoc on my leafy greens in late June….I mean they tore my plants up!!! I am an organic food grower and needed an all natural pest control. I learned that ladybugs feast on cabbage worms.

I purchased live ladybugs and had them shipped to my home. They did their thang in my garden. Two months later, following ladybug magic, watering, pruning, and fertilizing, my greens are beautiful again!

Leafy greens grow best in cooler temps and as the summer winds down and we transition to fall gardening, I will continue to let them grow through November. So grateful.

Did you know that sunflowers produce seeds that can be replanted (to create more sunflowers) or roasted and salted and then eaten? This is a Mammoth Sunflower. It is HUGE and grows to be as tall as seven to 12 feet. The seeds form from tiny flowers (the flowers fall off and you can see the actual brownish/grey seeds here). Nature is absolutely fascinating and amazing!

Color changes are my favorite! Did you know that green bell peppers are considered raw/unripe and have a slightly bitter taste? Yellow, orange, and red bell peppers are fully ripe, with red being the sweetest.

Look at one of my beautiful Moon and Stars Watermelons. She’s the biggest of the bunch. I have to secure her to the trellis soon so that she won’t fall off before she’s ripe! Oh, and I grew this baby from seed!

I picked 3/4 of the stems and leaves off my brussel sprout plant a week ago in order to promote growth and give bottom sprouts more sun. I left leaves at the top of the plant so that the plant could continue to get the nutrients needed in order to grow.

The sprouts have gotten bigger and should be ready for harvest in September.

Tuesday was my last food growing class with the preschool babies. They were able to open a bean pod and discover the beans inside, harvest from the community garden (we found a HUGE zucchini), and taste tomatoes from the garden. They love to learn and their memories are phenomenal. I am confident that some of them will grow their own food in the future. So grateful for the experience.
